CPRI Profile
Central Power Research Institute, popularly known as CPRI was set up in 1960 by the Government of India
to function as a National organization for applied research in power sector and to serve as an independent
body for the testing and certification of power equipment. In 1978, it was reorganised as an autonomous
society under the Ministry of Power Government of India. The Head Office and the main set-up of the
institute is at Bangalore and its units are situated at Bhopal, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Noida, Kolkata and
Guwahati. CPRI laboratories have state-of-art research and testing equipment to meet the evaluation as
per National and International standards. CPRI is a Member on the prestigious STL - Short Circuit Testing
Liaison and the facilities have been accredited as per ISO/IEC 17025 norms. The facilities are also
accredited by Intertek ASTA, UK and Bureau of Indian Standards. CPRI has a vast experience and expertise
in the areas of material characterization, simulation, diagnostic, calibration, and system analysis. CPRI also
provides the consultancy services on various needs of power sector besides offering Customised Training
Programmes. It has been extending its services for over five decades to industries in their quest for
innovation, new product development, import substitution, quality assurance etc.
The Materials Technology Division of CPRI is equipped with advanced and sophisticated materials
evaluation facilities aimed at providing testing and consultancy services in the areas of materials
engineering for the power sector. The materials characterization refers to the use of external techniques to
probe into internal structure and properties of a material which can take the form of actual material testing
or analysis. The characterization of materials such as metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites,
semi-conductors, etc. in respect of physical, chemical, thermal and mechanical properties are done using
sophisticated equipments keeping in view of their applications in every field.
Significance of CRGO, CRNGO & Amorphous Electrical Steels
Electrical steel, also known as transformer steel, plays a vital role in the generation, transmission &
distribution of electrical power. Being one of the strategic magnetic materials produced today, these steels
are essential in the fabrication of a number of electrical equipment such as transformers, generators,
stator/rotor of electrical motors etc. They are tailor made materials with specific physical parameters (e.g.
0.025 to 0.25 mm thick) and metallurgical (e.g. Fe, Si & Boron), mechanical (e.g. high ductility), and
magnetic properties (e.g. low core loss and high permeability). Produced in the form of cold rolled strips or
laminations, they are stacked / wound together to form the core etc.
Electrical grade steels are formed by alloying carbon steel with small quantities of silicon, boron which
helps to reduce the eddy current losses in the core. The electrical steels follow rigorous metallurgical
processes of manufacture and are made by re-rolling standard silicon steel or by casting amorphous steel.
To get the full advantage from a laminated core, the laminations must be insulated from one another. They
are fabricated to specific and stringent surface insulation characteristics. Therefore Electrical steels are
available with a wide variety of varying properties to suit the intended application. The well-known types
of electrical steels widely used by the electrical equipment industry are Cold Rolled Grain-Oriented
(CRGO), Cold Rolled Grain Non-Oriented (CRNGO) and Amorphous. Prior to their incorporation in the
equipment, these steels must undergo rigorous evaluations, followed by certifications according to the
recognized national (typically IS 3024/648/649) and international standards.
The electrical Steels are the basic building blocks for magnetic circuits in rotating machinery and
transformers which constitute transformer cores. CRGO, CRNGO & Amorphous steels are produced in the
world according to their metallic structure, magnetic properties and their applications. Magnet frames and
motor housings are manufactured using precisely punched steel laminations, which are then pressed
together in fixture, thus giving them a sturdy structure. Improper processing, handling of these strips,
sheets or long laminations can introduce distortion. These distortions are usually plastic stresses

(irreversible) which can vary the magnetic properties, thereby hampering the qualities of the machines
(transformers, motors etc.) in which they are used.
Workshop Theme / Objectives
Keeping in view the importance of understanding the intricacies involved in the manufacture and
evaluation of electrical grade steels, Materials Technology Division of CPRI is organizing a comprehensive
Two days Workshop during 18th and 19th January 2013 on the topic Significance and Evaluation of CRGO,
CRNGO & Amorphous Electrical Steels. This workshop is meant to disseminate the knowledge in the area
of electrical steel evaluation methods covering the theory, measurement techniques, test procedures and
other associated aspects. Further, the participants will get conversant with the engineering aspects such as
significance of electrical steels on distortion, damage initiation, quality assurance, application of these
steels in the electrical equipment etc. The acceptance criteria of electrical steels in Indian transformers will
also be discussed in cooperation with ITMA (Indian Transformer Manufacturers Association).
The topics include, but are not restricted only to the following.
v
Overview of transformer technology in the country.
v
Significance of electrical steels related to challenges in manufacture of Transformers.
v
Control of Power losses and techniques for improving transformer performance
v
Typical case studies of transformers for benchmarking and failure investigations.
v
Characterization methods in respect of magnetic, Insulation and Stacking factor evaluation of
various grades of electrical steels
v
Gradation (primary and secondary) of electrical steels
Call for Papers
In addition to invited papers from experts in this field, it is planned to accept a chosen few contributed
papers for presentation in the workshop. Technical papers in the area of electrical steels and related
subjects are invited from steel, equipment and user industries, research organizations and academicians
for oral presentation in the workshop. The deadlines in respect of the papers are given below.
v
Submission of abstract (one page) : 14.12.2012
v
Acceptance of communication : 21.12.2012
