Round pull broach.
Fig. 9.1 Elements of the round pull broach: l1 is length of the pull end; l2 is length of the neck; l3 is length of the front
taper; l4 is length of the front pilot; l5 is length of the cutting section; l6 is length of the sizing section; l7 is length of the
rear pilot; l is length of the broach; d1, d2 are diameters of the pull end; d3 is diameter of the neck; d4 is diameter
of
the front pilot; d5 is diameter of the rear pilot; t is pitch of teeth; f is width of the margin; is relief angle of the cutting
teeth; 1 is relief angle of the sizing teeth; is rake angle of teeth
2. Measure by the caliper following elements of the broach: length of the pull end l1, length of the neck l2,
length of the front taper l3, length of the front pilot l4, length of the cutting section l5, length of the sizing
section l6, length of the rear pilot l7, width of the margin of the sizing teeth f and pitch of the teeth of the
cutting and the sizing section t. Present measured dimensions on the draft of the broach;
3. Calculate full length of the broach l. Present results on the draft;
4. Measure by micrometer following diameters of parts of the broach: diameters of the pull end d1, d2,
diameter of the neck d3, diameter of the front pilot d4, diameter of the rear pilot d5. Present measured
diameters on the draft of the broach;
5. Measure by micrometer diameters of cutting and sizing teeth of the broach (diameters of sizing teeth are
the same and we can measure only diameter of one tooth). Present results of measuring in Table 9.1;
6. Calculate increase of the radius of cutting teeth by formula:
ai
d i d i 1
2
(9.1)
where ai is increase of the radius of the cutting tooth, mm; di is diameter of the next cutting tooth, mm; di-1 is diameter of
the previous cutting tooth, mm.
