Laboratory work Nr.

7
Deign and geometry of side milling cutters and their sharpening
Aim of the work
Practical acquaintance with constructional and geometrical elements of side milling cutter and with
process of its sharpening.
Devices for the work
1. Caliper;
2. Goniometer;
3. Centers;
4. Indicator;
5. Magnetic stand for indicator;
6. Side milling cutter.
For sharpening of milling cutter we use sharpener 3A64D and following equipment of a sharpener:
1.
Centers;
2.
Template for height control of the grinding head;
3.
Universal support;
4.
Mean for angle control;
5.
Spindle of milling cutter;
6.
Collar;
7.
Set of wrenches;
8.
Flaring cup abrasive wheel.
Course of the work
1. Draw draft of side milling cutter. Show dimensions and angles (Fig. 7.1);

Fig. 7.1 Elements of side milling cutter: D is outer diameter; d is inner diameter; B is width; b is width of key way; is
relief angle; is rake angle

2. Measure by caliper following elements of side milling cutter: outer diameter D, inner diameter d, width
of milling cutter B, width of a key way b. Present measured dimensions on the draft of side milling
cutter;
3. Establish number of teeth of milling cutter. Present results in table 7.1;

4. Establish material of milling cutter by marking on its end. Present mark in table 7.1;
5. Sharpen side (main) flank of milling cutter by sharpener 3A64D. For this operation we need:
5.1 Calculate vertical movement of a grinding head H (Fig. 7.2) by formula:
H

D sin
2

(7.1)
where H is vertical movement of a grinding head, mm; D is outer diameter of a milling cutter, mm; is relief angle of a
milling cutter, deg, which value is directed by the tutor.

Present quantities H and in table 7.1;

Fig. 7.2 Scheme of sharpening of side milling cutter: D is diameter of milling cutter; H is vertical movement of grinding
head; is relief angle of milling cutter, which value is directed by tutor

5.2

Turn grinding head around its vertical axis and set angle between an axis of a grinding head and an end
plane of abrasive wheel equal 1;
5.3 Fix abrasive wheel on the sharpener spindle;
5.4 Fix milling cutter on its spindle;
5.5 Fix collar on the spindle of a milling cutter;
5.6 Fix centers to the table of sharpener;
5.7 Fix the means for an angle control on the front center;
5.8 Fix the universal support to the base of the grinding head of the sharpener and match its top with the
axis of the spindle and the axis of centers using template for height control of the grinding head;
5.9 Fix the milling cutter on its spindle between centers;
5.10 Regulate supports of the table longitudinal feed. Universal support must be in front of sides of the
milling cutter after performing of the longitudinal motion;
5.11Check the collar and the means for angle control position. When universal support is in the front of sides
of the milling cutter, the means for the angle control must be in the zero position;
5.12Turn the vertical feed handle and lower the grinding head to distance H;
5.13Remove collar;
5.14Switch on the sharpener and sharpen milling cutter (2 3 teeth);
6. Measure by goniometer relief angle of one sharpened tooth of milling cutter (see Laboratory work Nr.
5, s. 8, Fig. 5.5). At this case count readings from the scale by real number of teeth z. Present results on
the draft of milling cutter and in table 7.1;
7. Measure by goniometer rake angle of one sharpened tooth of milling cutter (see Laboratory work Nr.
5, s. 9, Fig. 5.5). Count readings from the scale in dependence of the real number of teeth z. Present
results on the draft of a milling cutter;
8. Measure radial run out of sharpened teeth using centers and an indicator. Present results in table 7.1.
