Final exam review questions-Mr. Kiley; 7th Grade Science

1) Describe the physical and chemical changes that take place when the candle
is burning.

Physical= change shape, size, phase or other

reasonable

physical change

______________________________________

____Chemical change= burning (something new)

wax and wick turned
to new gas (carbon dioxide)

____________________________________________________________________________________

2) Compare the density of a 10,oookg block of ice and a 1kg ice cube. Explain.

Density is the same. Density of water is 1g/1mL or 1g/1cm. Intrinsic physical

property that does not depend on the amount of matter. A drop of water and a huge
pool of water have the same density.

3) Scientist in charge of a historic cemetary suggest that the lichens growing on

the monuments should be removed. A) Explain their reasoning.
B) How would the increase burning of fossil fuels
affect the monuments?
A) Should remove them because of the chemical weathering that will happen
that will erode the monument, breaking it down.
B) Fossil fuels are chemical changes causing rapid weathering and erosion. For
example, sulfur dioxide is released when burning fossil fuels causing acid rain
that erodes and weathers entire areas.

4) A skier goes down a slope. Describe the gravitational potential energy, kinetic
energy, and the potential energy transferred by the skier.

At the top, the skier has gravitational potential energy and high potential energy,
but no kinetic energy (not moving yet). As the skier moves downhill, PE is converted
into KE. The faster the skier goes, the less potential energy and the more kinetic
energy. At the bottom (stopped), the skier returns to 100% PE and 0% KE.

5) Identify 4 (four) factors that affect the thermal expansion of an object.

Initial (starting) temperature
Temperature change
What its made of
State of matter of the object

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can be _______________ in a system.

Light bulbs are examples of how electromagnetic energy (light) is converted from
__________________energy.

Temperature and ________________ are factors that affect the thermal energy of an
object.

Key

Matter- anything that has mass and takes up space

Mass- amount of matter in an object

Colloid-suspended particles that are too small to settle out of a liquid or

gas

What is the solvent in vinegar? water

Salt and water are a ________homogeneous____________ mixture.

Density- D=m/v

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can be __transfered______ in a

system.

Light bulbs are examples of how electromagnetic energy (light) is converted from
__electric___________energy.

Temperature and ______mass______ are factors that affect the thermal energy of an
object.

Convection- movement of particles in a fluid

Fractional distillation- separating substance by using different boiling points

Distillate- lowest boiling point when separating using fractional distillation

(separate ethanol, water, and isopropanol). Ethanol is the distillate

Vocab/Concepts: Physical Earth-7th grade science final

What supplies the energy for weather on earth? The sun

How do mountains form?

Two (same densities) of continental plates move towards each other,
collide, and the edges crumble and break

Island arcs- caused by oceanic plates subducting (going under another

plate)

Sketch and label a composite volcano including ash cloud, crater, magma chamber,
and vent(s)

p. 56 diagram

Describe the steps (in order) that form a tsunami.

1- Strong earthquake underwater
2- Tsunami waves form in deep ocean waters as gentle but fast moving
waves
3- Tsunami wave slows down as they approach shallow coastline
4- As waves approach land, height increases (up to 30 meters)
5- Tsunami waves reach land causing damage
