Coding using ScratchJR |

Stage 1| Technology

Summary
This unit introduces powerful ideas from engineering and computer science. The term powerful idea refers to a
concept that children can learn through a curriculum that will serve them beyond the lifetime of a specific classroom
technology. In this case, the curriculum revolves around the ScratchJr iPad application. Powerful ideas may be applied to
many disciplines and will be rewarding in students academic and personal futures.

Stage 1 - Working Technologically
Students generate and develop ideas by: using feedback from others to refine design ideas Personal and social capability

Students evaluate by: explaining the strengths and limitations of what they did and what could have been done differently to

Unit Overview
The Unit will be divided into three modules based on three interactive genres of
ScratchJr-based projects. These genres are collage, story, and game. Each of these modules is

comprised of two units:


1. A series of lessons that introduce ScratchJr features and programming blocks
2. An opportunity for children to create their own projects by applying concepts learned in
module lessons

Schedule
Introduction (2.5 minutes): The lesson should begin with the teacher introducing him/herself to the class. The teacher should explain
why s/he would like to teach the students about programming. S/he should briefly ask students what they know about programming.
Simon Says (10 minutes): The teacher should play Simon Says with the class. S/he should discuss how this activity is dependent on
properly being able to give and follow instructions. S/he should then explain how providing clear instructions is critical to computer

Program the Teacher (15 minutes): In this activity, students will be responsible for verbally directing their teacher to
special destinations in the classroom (e.g. to a bookcase or a closet). The instructions the students give to the teacher
must be specific.
Week 4 Term 2
Module 2 - Interactive Story :Speed, Numbers and Repeating Sequences, Speech Bubbles, Sounds, Pages, Wait for
Create own story. Use five sprites and have them race across the page. Make sprites that are likely to be slow do so. Share these
stories with class.

Week 5 Term 2
Starting own story using skills learnt so far. Introduce to pages and look at idea of using four pages and moving from one to the next.
Week 6 Term 2
Book Fair on in Library. Look at Book Fair. Create wish lists. Then look at winning CBCA award books- Mr Huff. Then finish own story
and share with the class.

Start on Bump, Start on Tap, Send and Receive Messages, Stop
