Where is Earths water located? Where is Earth's

water located? Water on and in the Earth

Where is Earth's water located and in what forms does it exist? You
can see how water is distributed by viewing these bar charts. The leftside bar shows where the water on Earth exists; about _____ percent
of all water is in the _______. The middle bar shows the

distribution of that _______percent of ______ Earth's water

that is __________. The majority, about ______ percent, is
locked up in ____________, mainly in Greenland and Antarctica.
You might be surprised that of the ____________ freshwater,
almost all of it is ___________ your feet, as _____________.
No matter where on Earth you are standing, chances are that, at
some depth, the ground below you is saturated with water. Of all
the freshwater on Earth, only about _______ percent is contained in _______ and ________yet
rivers and lakes are where most of the water we use in our everyday lives exists.
In the pie charts, the top pie chart shows that over 99 percent of all water
(oceans, seas, ice, most saline water, and atmospheric water) is ________
available for our uses. And even of the remaining fraction of ________
percent (the small brown slice in the top pie chart), much of that is
_______ of reach. Considering that most of the water we use in everyday life
comes from rivers (the small dark blue slice in the bottom pie chart), you'll see
we generally only make use of a tiny portion of the available water supplies.
The bottom pie shows that the vast majority of the ________
water________ for our uses ____________________ (the large grey
slice in the second pie chart).

Problem

Your Earth science class is conducting an experiment to determine the salt concentrations in an estuary, a place
where a freshwater river flows into the salty seawater of an ocean. You have been told that in the inland portion of
an estuary, the less-dense river water overrides the denser seawater.
You have collected seven samples of water from different locations in the estuary. You have also collected a sample
of pure river water and a sample of pure seawater. You make concentrated samples by boiling each estuary sample
until it is reduced to 250 mL. Then you fill seven test tubes halfway with each concentrated sample. Next, you
make reference samples in seven more test tubes. The table shows the contents of each reference test tube.
Study the illustration and table and answer the questions that follo w.

Knowing that river water is usually brownish in

color and seawater is clear, how could you use
the river water/seawater samples to determine
the composition of the estuary water samples?

Would you expect the concentration of salt to be the

same or different in each estuary sample? Explain your
