FUNDRAISING STRATEGY PLANS

In order to ensure a stable and sustainable economy that is attributed with double
digit growth, it was found necessary to mitigate the perennial problem of famine
and shortage of water in Wote location in Ujumbe County in Kenyas Coast region.
The project will be implemented by Twiga Development Agency (TDA) a nongovernmental organization based in Ujumbe County. This project aims at
empowering 2500 households in the area to be more resilient towards drought and
famine. This project is to be funded by Water Inc., an international NGO which is the
main decision-maker in international development because they finance majority of
interventions, the NGO is based in Washington DC. The duration period of the
project is twoyears. The total budget is USD 200,000.

Main Strategies of the Project


1. The excavation of a 50,000m3 dam to provide water for domestic and livestock
use.
2. Irrigation
3. Promotion of conservation agriculture practices like digging zai pits and adoption
of drought tolerant crops like cowpeas and green grams
4. Facilitate the formation and registration of a community water trust that will be
responsible for the management of the dam beyond the project period

Objectives of Fundraising
1. Help people become self-sufficient in food production and income generating
thereby creating a secure future for generations to come.
2. Support agricultural activities including livestock rearing, irrigation schemes and
other water based projects
3. Achieving food security and fighting hunger.
4. Increased access to agricultural land, farminputs, credittechnology,
extensionservices, irrigation and access to water through water harvesting and
boreholes.
5. Link community members to markets through value addition of their products
including agro-based supply chain, creating new markets for their produce including
organic food stuffs.
6. Assess and build on the basics of the irrigation scheme and building of the dam.
7. Create a mechanism for keeping fundraising in focus-put it on the county meeting
agenda every month
8. Assess fundraising potential in everything the county does or plan to do
9. Provide board/staff training in fundraising
10. Develop a written fundraising plan to follow and implement
11. Create a fundraising sub committee
12. Recruit board members with an interest in fundraising
13. Identify the amount and type of funding required for each need and brainstorm
all options for acquiring them, preliminarily assess each source objectively as to
feasibility, risk, etc and decide on which toadapt
14. Recognize the risks, limitations and security of each funding source and build a
multi-source funding program that is resilient to change
15. Plan fundraising action methodically

Target
1. Consult with stakeholders including, businesses, residents and visitors
2. Meet with members of the farming community in Ujumbe County
3. Hold two successful public forums, the first as a launch of the project, the second
to report findings
4. Set up a dedicated Project planning Grant Steering Group, which meet every two
months
5. Investigate the potential of new and existing ways of conserving water in the
county
6. Use the expertise and resources within the community to gain a greater
understanding of the broad project area through site visits, local knowledge and
contacts.
7. Sources of funding will include Grants from donors, Civic funding donations,
money collected from the community welfare society and County allocations for
development project.

1. Appoint a fundraising committee and community members to be engaged with
the importance of fundraising
2. Fundraising requirement to be identified for the county
3. Routinely enacted short-term and long-term plans
4. Consideration of fund-making potential

5. Keeping track of donors, interest shown in County activities, and the success of
fundraising efforts
