Fred Mortagne - Attraper Au Vol

Um Yeah Press 2016 ISBN 9781942884088 Acqn 26387
Hb 24x30cm 132pp 66ills 39
Fred Mortagne is a self-taught French director and photographer who is internationally acclaimed
for his images of skateboarding and street photography. Attraper au vol (Catch in the Air) is the
culmination of Mortagnes photographic career, from 2000 to 2015. A feast of lines and angles,
his black-and-white compositions blend his subjects into their environments, offering an abstract
perspective on architecture, geometry and the human figure. His work intrigues both skaters and
non-skaters alike, as it emphasizes the aesthetic beauty of skate and urban culture rather than
pure performance (although the raw talent of his subjects is readily apparent).
As a young skate rat in the early nineties, I was super into watching skate videos, and very early
I was sensitive to how the videos were made, he told an interviewer. When the filming was
good, I was super thrilled. This pushed me to begin filming my own clips with my friends, for fun
... for over 30 years, it has been the love of my life. Skateboarding has taken me to so many
places--not just physically, but culturally and artistically.
This book includes a foreword by the world-renowned photographer Anton Corbijn and an essay
by legendary skateboarder Geoff Rowley, with whom Mortagne has worked extensively.

Brassai - Graffiti, Le Langage Du Mur

Editions Xavier Barral 2016 ISBN 9782365111157 Acqn 26879
Hb 23x29cm 320pp 200ills 41.95
Text in French
These brief signs are nothing less than the origin of writing, these animals, these monsters, these
demons, these heroes, these phallic gods, nothing less than elements of mythology. (Brassa)
With those words, Brassai commented, in 1933, the first publication of some of his photographs
of fragments of walls in Paris, in the Minotaure magazine. The Graffiti series, on which the
photographer would work for more than 25 years, has more than 500 images, among which some
are still unknown.
This book presents for the first time Brassas work on Graffiti, puts into perspective with the
context of the time, thanks to more than 40 photographs and unknown documents, as well as
works by Picasso, Dubuffet and Prvert. The result is an original and thorough look at the famous
series. Curator Karolina Ziebinska-Lewandowskas research sheds some light on the way this
cult series has been received and understood in its time.

Hb 14x20cm 216pp col ills 42
'Jason Fulford: Contains 3 Books' is a silver foil-stamped box that, appropriately enough, contains
three books by photographer Jason Fulford: 'Mild Moderate Severe Profound', 'I Am Napoleon',
and '&&'. The culmination of three years and 15 countries worth of travel around the world
undertaken by Fulford as a Guggenheim Fellow, the photographs in these three volumes receive
Fulfords trademark elliptical, evocative sequencing, interspersed with texts that alternately
explain and confound.

The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and city of Pripyat are officially uninhabitable. Yet for 30 years
now, people have returned to live in the zones abandoned villages, clinging to the only home
they know. Photographer Esther Hessing travelled to Slavutych, built for the evacuated personnel
of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant after the 1986 disaster, to document the lives of the zones
aging residents along with those in Slavutych, many of whom work at the failed nuclear plant to
build its New Safe Confinement structure, slated for completion at the end of 2016. Their stories
are told in this crowd-funded book, through Hessings captivating images and texts by Sophieke
Thurmer.

Twenty Years, Nineteen Objects, Eighteen Stories

KesselsKramer 2016 ISBN 9789070478483 Acqn 26933
Hb 18x18cm 176pp 20ills 15col 18.50
Established in 1996, KesselsKramer is an independent communications agency based in
Amsterdam that produces an effective and prolific output of solutions that blur the boundaries
between culture, commerce, content, and collaboration. This book marks the agencys 20th
anniversary, and is themed around the stories that happen while the work is being made.
Through a selection of nineteen objects, a string of tales emerges some self-indulgent, others
humorous, and still others thought-provoking or even tragic. It is a book for anyone who has
worked in the creative industries, and a pithy reminder as to why this work is viewed as life by
those who do it, and vice versa.

Lecturis 2016 ISBN 9789462261860 Acqn 26840
Pb 21x27cm 48pp 36ills 18.50
Visual artist Paul Bogaers likes to describe his work as 'thought photography'. Making use of a
medium that particularly excels in showing the world as it actually looks, Bogaers has been
searching for years for ways of using photos to express an inner world. He combines his rather
intuitively collected photographs from different sources with his own photographs, usually taken
without any preconceived idea. Thus he creates surprising, marvellous, or sometimes even
impossible combinations.

Sturm & Drang 2016 ISBN 9783906822075 Acqn 26846
Hb 24x32cm 120pp 100col ills 51.75
First published in 1984, photographer Willy Spillers scenes from New Yorks notoriously crimeridden subway system retrospectively tell a different story, one of glitz and colour, curiosity and
amusement. Today we can look back at his images with a more objective feeling, finding not the
sensationalism, danger, and voyeurism proclaimed by the media at the time, but rather the
fascination of this young European newcomer to the Big Apple with its people, neon lights,
movement, and relentless energy. Captured on Kodachrome slide film, Spillers visions of the
citys sordid underground transportation system fall right in line with other pioneers who first
documented New York in colour.

Hb 20x25cm 180pp 71ills 70col 51.75
According to Natasha Christia, Trinidad Carrillos diaries of dreams entail a wonderful, quasimystical moment, in which the chasm between the past, the present and the future collapses, and
life unexpectedly assumes a significance beyond everyday reality. It is the moment when word
becomes image. No Date continues in this tradition with a highly diverse series of photographs
that range from effervescent landscapes and deeply shadowed portraits to surreal shots of
people and babies in interiors or natural settings, night scenes, and ghostly appearances. The
book is dedicated to Moloch, the Biblical name of a Canaanite god, and includes the poem
Migratory Birds.

Matt Eich is a photographer born and based in Virginia. His work centres on long-form
photographic essays about the American Condition, and this, his first book, portrays just a single
microcosm of a story familiar to many similar communities throughout the United States. The
series portrays the lives of residents in various Ohio towns, like Carbondale and Mineral. Once
booming coal mining communities, these places now reflect the desolate shadow of Appalachian
poverty, their people hopeless and without a future, left with nothing but their cultural identity in
the aftermath of extractive industry. The book includes an afterword by Eich, plus an insert with
two essays.

'(Un)expected' is a memorable photo project about the coping process of surviving relatives of
suicides. West Flanders, the region where Peter Dekens grew up, has high suicide rates; one and
a half times higher than the European average. In 2008 Dekens mother took her life.
'(Un)expected' contains five stories about the grief of survivors of suicide and the way people
cope with their loss in different ways. Dekens wishes the book to be a support for survivors and to
make the taboo regarding suicide widely debatable.

Obersalzberg, Sarajevo, Athens, Brussels, Nordhausen, Zagreb, Belgrade these are some of
the places photographer Armand Quetsch stopped by on his European odyssey places charged
with European history. But Quetsch does not operate in a documentary manner, preferring to visit
the landscapes, to feel their spirit, to make images which, without words, convey an echo of
history and a sense of the present situation. Inscribed in these pictures are also the dramatic
developments of recent years: financial crisis, refugees, nationalism, insecurity, perplexity,
despair. We see a battered oil drum, the closed gates of a bank, dilapidated housing blocks, and
mist-shrouded trees.

Based in Amsterdam, Martine Stig is familiar with the photographic medium as a voyeuristic act.
She also researches photographys role in the perception of reality how the clichs and tricks of
the profession can be used to manipulate the experience of the viewer. Noir, shot candidly on
the streets of Amsterdam between 2014 and 2016, comprises a long string of images akin to
cinematic shots. Whether seen close up or from a distance, her subjects seem like protagonists in
a film, even while other images offer mise-en-scne for the purported narrative found within
these pages. Stigs images are meticulously framed, setting a vaguely unsettling mood and
raising questions.

Bartolomeo Celestino - Surface Phenomena

Perimeter Books 2016 ISBN 9780994388339 Acqn 26493
Pb 21x30cm 112pp 60ills 30col 52.50
Bartolomeo Celestino has been returning to a particular section of Sydneys coastal fringe atop
an otherwise unremarkable set of cliffs in the eastern suburb of Bronte day after day, year after
year, to undertake the protracted task of setting up his large-format camera and training his lens
downward to the fierce waters below. In the images that populate his debut book Surface
Phenomena, the horizon, the land or any other contextual details are absent; the ocean is
everything and everywhere. The mass of turbulence and white water and the deft flashes of calm
that these photographs describe occupy a fundamentally different formal and conceptual space to
the iconography of the Australian coast.

Perimeter Editions 2016 ISBN 9780994388377 Acqn 26534
Pb 19x26cm 48pp 25col ills 31.50
Taking her cue from late Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri and his 1991 essay 'A light on the wall',
Emma Phillips new body of work adopts a mode of investigation that perpetuates this notion of
the camera as conjurer. At once untethered, methodical and speculative in tenor, the Melbourne
photographers works describe a claustrophobic, disorientating and mildly ominous space; they
read as vignettes or sketches, adrift between the schisms of reality and the illusory, authenticity
and artifice. Slowly, quietly, they unfold and surprise and reveal. In this collection of images, she
describes various planes of representation, photographs the photographed and the painted and
complicates the landscape and the architectural.
