Introduction

I.

It is scary season at university. You know? For lots of students, while exams are around
the corner, and that time they are rushing up with millions of deadlines. It is nightmare

II.

that will always haunt you.

All-nighters are pretty much synonymous with student lifestyles. Making sleep
deprivation as a routine, forcing their body to study and finish the task given by lecturers

III.

all night.
Did you know that most of university students are sleep deprived? A survey was made
and result show that 70% of students obtaining less than 6 hours of sleep. 50% says that
they are facing daytime sleepiness due to insufficient sleep. (Lund HG. (n.d.) Sleep

IV.

patterns and predictors of disturbed sleep in a large population of college students.)

When I was at UiTM Jengka past years ago doing my final year project and report, I had
facing sleep deprivation until one day, I am fainted due to sleep deprivation. I remember
that time I only sleep for 30 minutes a day.

V.

Today, I hope that I can persuade each of you to always take care of your sleep time in

VI.

results that will protect your health.

This is because; all of us have rights to get a proper and enough sleeps by good time
management and life planning.

(Lets move to my first point)

Body
I.

Sleep deprivation negatively impact learning, memory, and performance of students.

A. Sleepiness and irregular sleep schedules have many unintended consequences
which are negatively impact learning, memory, and performance of student.
i. There are interaction between sleep stages, pattern of sleep stages, and
memory.
ii. The dual process theory maintains that certain types of memory are
dependent on specific sleep states, such that procedural memory (knowing
how) may be dependent on REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and
declarative memory (knowing what) on NREM (non-REM) sleep.
a. For an example, REM sleep normally occurs every 90120
minutes, with each REM sleep period growing progressively
longer, with the last episode near rise time. Therefore, university
students with early morning classes may not be attain the last 12
REM sleep periods, thus adversely affecting procedural memory.
(Amlander CJ, Fuller PM, editors. Basics of Sleep Guide.)
b. Thus, do not lets sleep deprivation giving you a bad impact that
can cause your learning, memory and performance reduced.

(My second point)

B. Insufficient sleep can increase depressive symptoms among students especially
girl.
i. Are you really get what Im talking about?
a. Let me give you an imagination. Are you ever thinking, sometimes
you go stay up for whole night to finish your jobs or tasks, and
then suddenly people around calling you to ask something.

b. Do you ever think what will happen? You might end up to scolding
them for no reasons and later you will regret for what you have
done. All of that just because the pressure and depression that you
face.
c. In a study of female college students, sleep debt of 2 hours per
night and/or a bedtime after 2 am was associated with greater
depressive symptoms. Irregular sleep schedules have been
associated with greater depressive symptoms. Prolonged sleep
latency was associated with loss of pleasure, punishment feelings,
and self-dislike. (Regestein Q. Sleep debt and depression in female
college students. (n.d.))
a. As a simple example, Increased total sleep in teenagers has
also been shown to improve mood.
(Transition: So whats the solution?)
II.

Solving these problems required customer action and yourself where you need to be
professional in managing your life schedule.
A. Plan your life as it can improve your sleep properly.
i. Instead of making task or jobs in last minutes, try not to burden it. Do all
of you task slowly and periodically. Get enough rest if you really need for
it.
a. As a students, don't even think of pulling an all-nighter before an
exam, because researchers say that does more harm than good.
Last-minute cramming refuses to sink in, because the consolidation
of memories occurs during deep sleep.
b. For example, you may face fainting or loss of memories because
your brains did not have an enough sleeps.

Conclusion
I.

Last but not least, I want to remind you again, you need to plan your lifestyle, so that you

II.

will get proper sleeps and avoid sleep deprivations.

Give time to your body to get rewarded for what you have done. I mean, when you have
push your body to works, you need to give some rest to recover the inner and outer
energy.

III.

Do not try to force yourself until your sleep time is affected.
