Learning Resources
Resources needed:
e.g., technology resources,
media resources, books, web
sites

1. Gather students and go over what to expect in the gym before

heading over to the media center. Include quiet signal.
- We are going to go to the media center.
- When we get into the media center please sit in a circle on
the floor.
- Remember to use Voice Level One in the hallway
2. Go to media center and assist students to sit in a circle
3. Ask students pre-activity questions:
- By a show of hands, how many of you have felt happy
before?
- What does happy look like?
- What about sad, what does being sad look like?
- By a show of hands how many of you have seen someone
look sad before?
- Did you try to help them not be sad? What did you do?
4. Show everyone the small objects
5. Tell the students that the objects are gifts, and that the task is to
try to give them away.
6. They are to pass the items around the circle as the music plays.
When the music stops, the people with the items will have
received a gift from the person next to them.
7. Start the music and have students pass for a short time.
8. When music stops, see who has the gifts. Ask each of the
people who has a gift to thank the person who passed it to them.
9. Continue playing for a few rounds so more students have the
opportunity to give and receive.
10. Process/Discuss
- How did it feel to get a gift?
- How did it feel to give a gift?
- How did it feel to be thanked for giving?
- Do gifts have to be things? What might these gifts be?
- What could you do if you see someone who is sad at recess?
(invite them to play with you!)

Students will be evaluated by how well they respond to the reflection

questions as well as by the quality of interaction in cooperative group
work.
