The K-12 Education Curriculum:

The K to 12 Program covers 13 years of basic education with the following key stages:

Kindergarten to Grade 3

Grades 4 to 6

Grades 7 to 10 (Junior High School)

Grades 11 and 12 (Senior High School)

Why are we now implementing 12 years of basic education?

The Philippines is the last country in Asia and one of only three countries worldwide with a 10-year preuniversity cycle (Angola and Djibouti are the other two).

A 12-year program is found to be the best period for learning under basic education. It is also the
recognized standard for students and professionals globally.

What has been done to get ready for K to 12? Are we really ready for K to 12?

SY 2011-2012: Universal Kindergarten implementation begins

SY 2012-2013: Enhanced curriculum for Grades 1-7 implemented

2013: K to 12 enacted into Law

2014: Curriculum for Grades 11-12 finished

This 2015, we are getting ready for the implementation of Senior High School (SHS) in SY 2016-2017.

We are on the fifth year of the implementation of the K to 12 Program. Our last mile is the Senior High
School. All 221 divisions of the Department of Education (DepEd) have finished planning and have
figures on enrolment a year in advance. These plans were reviewed by a separate team and finalized
upon consultation with other stakeholders.

Classrooms: DepEd has built 66,813 classrooms from 2010 to 2013. There are 33,608
classrooms completed and undergoing construction in 2014. As of DepEd is planning to establish
5,899 Senior High Schools nationwide. As of April 30, 2015, DepEd has issued provisional
permits to 1,866 private schools set to offer Senior High School in 2016.

Teachers: From 2010-2014, DepEd has filled 128,105 new teacher items. DepEd is targeting
two kinds of teachers: those who will teach the core subjects, and those who will teach the
specialized subjects per track. DepEd will hire 37,000 teachers for Senior High School for 2016
alone.

Textbooks: Learning materials are being produced for elementary to junior high while textbooks
for Senior High School (which has specialized subjects) are being Curriculum: The K to 12
curriculum is standards- and competence-based. It is inclusive and built around the needs of the
learners and the community. The curriculum is done and is available on the DepEd website. It is
the first time in history that the entire curriculum is digitized and made accessible to the public.

Private SHS: There are 2,199 private schools cleared to offer Senior High School and over 200
more being processed.

How will K to 12 affect the college curriculum?

The College General Education curriculum will have fewer units. Subjects that have been taken up in
Basic Education will be removed from the College General Education curriculum.

Ive been hearing that a lot of people have not been consulted regarding K to 12. Is this true?

DepEd has always been transparent in the planning and implementation of K to 12. There have been
regular consultations with various sectors since 2010, before the law was passed, during the crafting of
the IRR, and during implementations. DepEd representatives have also attended various fora and
conferences, including legislative inquiries, regarding K to12. We are open to criticisms and suggestions
regarding this.

How can I help improve basic education?

Private partners can donate through the Adopt-A-School program. A 150% tax incentive will be
provided for every contribution.

Help spread awareness and information on the K to 12 Program.

A recent change in the Philippines educational system was implemented starting in 2011. President
Aquino signed the K 12 education into law in 2013, adding three years to the countrys basic education
curriculum.

The new K 12 curriculum guide requires all Filipino students to have one year of kindergarten, six years
of elementary schooling (grades 1 to 6), four years of junior high school (grades 7 to 10), and two years
of senior high school (grades 11 to 12).

The rationale
Prior to the implementation of the K 12 curriculum guide, the Philippines was one of
only three countries in the world and the only one in Asia that still had only 10 years in
basic education.

Reasons for the K-12 Education System

1. Sufficient Instructional Time

With K-12 education, students will have sufficient instructional time for subject-related tasks, making them
more prepared in every subject area. With the old system, Filipino students were consistently behind on
achievement scores.
In 2008, for instance, international test results revealed that Filipinos were behind compared to other countries
when we finished dead last in math.
2. More Skilled and Competent Labor Force
Another reason to support K-12 education is because the graduates of this program will be more prepared to
enter the labor force. High school graduates of the 10-year curriculum were not yet employable since they were
not competent or wellequipped enough for the workplace.
In addition, high school graduates of the 10-year curriculum are not yet 18. With the new curriculum, senior
high school students can specialize in a field that they are good at and interested in. As a result, upon graduation
they will have the specific job-related skills they need even without a college degree. When they graduate from
high school, these young people will be 18 and employable, adding to the nations manpower.
3. Recognition as Professionals Abroad
Finally, with K-12 education, Filipino graduates will be automatically recognized as professionals abroad
because we are following the international education standard as practiced by all nations.
There will be no need to study again and spend more money in order to qualify for international standards. With
a K-12 education, Filipino professionals who aspire to work abroad will not have a hard time getting jobs in
their chosen field. Furthermore, they will be able to help their families in the Philippines more with remittances,
property purchase, and small businesses.
K-12 Education Will Help Filipinos Gain a Competitive Edge
Though Filipinos are known to be competitive in the international community, our current education system
hinders us in becoming more competitive among other countries. The K-12 education plan offers a solution to
that problem.
However, it is undeniable that there will be problems that arise as we implement the program, which could
include a lack of budget, classrooms, school supplies, and teachers. That said, the long-term effects of K-12
education will be very beneficial to us Filipinos.
Therefore, we must support the K-12 educational plan to help improve our educational

curriculum has a advantages and disadvantages. The government allocated huge budget for this
program. What do you think? Is it okay to implement K-12 or just use the budget in building more
classrooms, increase the salary of the teachers? One of the goal of K-12 program is to make the
students equipped with lot of skills that are in-demands in the country and in abroad.
K-12 Education Program
There are many questions arises in implementing K-12, and here are they. Hey, if you have
question just leave a comment.

K-12 Education Program Advantages

Employment a student can apply for a work after senior high school since he has already skills
to use in working such as AutoCad, computer hardware servicing, dressmaking, cooking, etc.
Entrepreneurship well, in K-12 program, a student can teach entrepreneurship. He will obtain an
information about entrepreneurial skills. A student after senior high school will decide to start his
own business rather than looking for a job.
Higher Level of Education this is true since we added two years for education curriculum.
K-12 Disadvantages

A student who wants to pursue BS degree, example if a student wants to study engineering.
Instead of 5 years, it will take longer, maybe 6 years or 7 years depending on the subject he got
if credited after senior high school.
Budget for K-12 is Insufficient
How did you know that? Are you the President or the Secretary of Education? Well, if you have
noticed, the government is building new classrooms for the preparation of Senior High School.
Aside from classrooms, the government is conducting seminars and training for every K-12
teachers.

Question: If a college graduate cant find a job easily, how can a K-12 graduate can get a job
easily?
Answer: Since the K-12 student will learn specific skills, he can use this skills to earn a living. And
the best of it is, he can be an entrepreneur. K-12 can teach the students entrepreneurship,
wherein, it can help the student to think whether to look for a job after school or provide a job
after school.

Is K-12 the Solution to Poverty?

We can say YES, we can also say NO. You know what? The government helps us to make our
students skillful. However, it is not advisable to rely only to the government assistance. Why not

teach your kids on how to learn entrepreneurship, start his own business rather than looking for
a job.

Additional to entrepreneurship, why not teach your kids financial literacy? What is meant by
financial literacy? By knowing how to save and invest for the future, you and your whole family
can prosper in this life.

If you were given the chance to speak with the President, would you say STOP K-12 or you will
say K-12 is a burden. If I were you try to analyze the advantage and benefits of K-12 program, it
maybe a burden for awhile but it the long run, it will be a blessing for everyone.

Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune. Jim Rohn
If the K-12 will stop, I wish financial literacy and entrepreneurship will teach in school. And for
me, financial literacy and entrepreneurship is the solution for poverty and unemployment. There
are so much things you should know about K-12. Dont be a negative thinker, lets give it a try.
Lets help the government instead of complaining all over.

Whatever the education curriculum implemented, it is your choice whether you will adapt the old
mindset whereas an individual will look for a job after graduation. We better change that
mindset, why dont we think after graduation, we should start our own business and provide jobs
rather than looking for a job. If every one of us are looking for a job, what will happen?

But, if however at least 1 out of 50 students, there will be an entrepreneur? That means that
individual will provide a job for 49 people.
In K-12, it is very possible.

K-12 is a silver spoon!

Let it be. Let the government take risks for the education of our children. You will never know the
beauty of K-12 unless you are involved. What do I mean by involved? What do you always do for
your beloved country? Always complaining? Have you ever asked yourself, what is your
contribution for the countrys progress? Hmm? The government gave us spoon, actually it is a
silver spoon, a very special spoon. But, dont ever ask the government to feed your mouth again
and again. The government are teaching us to fish, dont ever ask the government again, what is
your fish for tonight.
