The Total Marshall

This CD is for anyone who plays chess - not just correspondence players.
The picture on the right is of Frank Marshall, the American grandmaster who invented this
exciting line against the Ruy Lopez: 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5
O-O Be7 6 Re1 b5 7 Bb3 O-O 8 c3 d5. The Marshall Attack has been
employed by numerous top grandmasters including Spassky, Geller, Nunn,
Adams and Short, and is also a popular line in amateur, Internet and
correspondence play.
Chess Mail editor Tim Harding is an acknowledged expert in the Marshall
and wrote several books about in in the past. On this work he has collaborated
with Latvian CC-GM Janis Vitomskis, who has been playing the Marshall
since the 1960s and analysed it with Tal, and German amateur player Martin
Bennedik, a finalist in the IECG 2000 World Championship.
This is now one of the best and most dynamic ways of fighting against White's principal 1 e4
opening. Black scores lots of wins and his overall score with the Marshall in our database is
very close to 50%. If you play the Marshall with either color you need this CD now. If you

Victor Charushin
1932-2002
We were deeply saddened to learn that ICCF International Master Victor
Charushin passed away at his home in Nizhny Novgorod on Thursday,
May 2nd. The chess world has lost a top correspondence player, composer,
and author of many books about his beloved game. No details about the
circumstances of his demise are available yet - we know only that the
chess community is sorely diminished without his presence among us.
To his many fans we must add that several Charushin manuscripts await
publication, a legacy for the benefit of all chess players. So while the
Master is gone, his voice will continue to be heard by those who share his
unique vision of our game. Victor has won his final victory, and has been
promoted as due a loyal pawn of chess. Now he plays the immortal game.

How Do I Get My Chess E-book?
Ordering an e-book from ChessCentral is easy. Here's how it works:
1.) From our catalog pages add the e-book you want to your shopping cart like any other item.
2.) When you check out and fill in your contact information, be sure to give us your correct
e-mail address. E-mail is how we will send you your receipt and password information to
download your e-book
3.) Immediately after checkout (usually within seconds) you'll get an e-mail with your
password, along with a hyperlink to the correct download page.
What Else Do I Need?
Chess e-books are read by ChessBase 6.0 and higher, or Fritz5 and higher, or the freeware
ChessBase Light. If you do not have ChessBase Light it is available for free download. Click
here to download ChessBase Light. After you have downloaded and installed ChessBase
Light, you're ready to enjoy any ChessCentral e-book or Member download.

Putting it all Together
1) First extract the ".cbv" file from it's zip file (ebookname.exe) you downloaded. It's
self-extracting, so just double-click the file you downloaded and retrieve the
"ebookname.cbv" file. That's the ChessBase file you'll use.
2) Place "ebookname.cbv" into a folder by itself - say, "ChessCentral" (C:\ChessCentral) where you'll put our other e-books someday! To make a new folder go to MY COMPUTER,
C DRIVE, FILE (on the top menu), NEW, FOLDER, then right click on the NEW FOLDER
icon to rename it.
3) Now you're ready to start ChessBase Light. After the program loads up, you go to the
DATABASE menu and select OPEN. There will be a little browser to your right where you
can direct the program to head for the folder containing "ebookname.cbv".
4) After you open the folder (double-click it's name), then the name "ebookname.cbv" will
appear to your left - in the file list. Any other databases you have there (probably zero) would
appear also. Anyway, highlight "ebookname.cbv". Before clicking "OK" there's a box below
that says "file type". You might as well tell the program that you're about to open a ".cbv" file.
Then click "OK"
5) The database will open - probably to the first text document. At this point you're in the
book, so look around and enjoy!.

This Agreement contains the complete terms and conditions that apply to
individual or corporate participation in the ChessCentral Associates
Program (the "Program"). As used in this Agreement, "we" means
ChessCentral and "you" means the applicant. "Site" means a World Wide
Web site and, depending on the context, refers either to ChessCentrals
site, located at the URL www.ChessCentral.com.
Enrollment in the Program
To enroll you will submit a complete Program application via our site. We
may reject your application if we determine (in our sole discretion) that
your site is unsuitable for the Program. Unsuitable sites include those that:
promote sexually explicit materials, promote violence, promote
discrimination based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, or age.
If we reject your application, you are welcome to reapply to the Program
at any time. You should also note that if we accept your application and

Referral Fees

Referral Fee Schedule
You will earn referral fees based on Qualifying Revenues according to
referral fee schedules to be established by us. "Qualifying Revenues" are
revenues derived by us from our sales of Qualifying Products, excluding
costs for shipping, handling, gift-wrapping, taxes, service charges, credit
card processing fees, returns and bad debt. The current referral fee
schedule is:
10% of Qualifying Revenues from sales of all Qualifying Products
(except as noted below)

Referral Fee Payment
We will pay your referral fees on a monthly basis. Approximately 5 days
following the end of each month, we will send you a check for the referral
fees earned. However, if the referral fees payable to you for any month
are less than $50, we will hold payment until the total amount due is at
least $50 or (if earlier) until this Agreement is terminated. In calculating
referral fees, we will deduct the corresponding referral fee from your next
payment if a product that generated a referral fee is returned by the
customer. If there is no subsequent payment, we will send you a bill for
the referral fee.
Policies and Pricing
Customers who buy products through this Program will be deemed to be

customers of ChessCentral. Accordingly, all ChessCentral rules, policies,
and operating procedures concerning customer orders, customer service,
and product sales will apply to those customers. We may change our
policies and operating procedures at any time. For example, we will
determine the prices to be charged for products sold under this Program in
accordance with our own pricing policies. Product prices and availability
may vary from time to time. We will use commercially reasonable efforts
to present accurate information, but we cannot guarantee the availability
or price of any particular product.
Term of the Agreement
The term of this Agreement will begin upon our acceptance of your
Program application and will end when terminated by either party. Either
you or we may terminate this Agreement at any time, with or without
cause, by giving the other party written notice of termination. Upon the
termination of this Agreement for any reason, you will immediately cease
use of, and remove from your site, all links to our site, and all
ChessCentral trademarks, trade dress, and logos, and all other materials
provided by or on behalf of us to you pursuant hereto or in connection
with the Program. You are eligible to earn referral fees only on our sales
of Qualifying Products that occur during the term, and referral fees earned
through the date of termination will remain payable only if the related
orders are not canceled or returned. We may withhold your final payment
for a reasonable time to ensure that the correct amount is paid.
Limitation of Liability
We will not be liable for indirect, special, or consequential damages (or
any loss of revenue, profits, or data) arising in connection with this
Agreement or the Program, even if we have been advised of the
possibility of such damages. Further, our aggregate liability arising with
respect to this Agreement and the Program will not exceed the total
referral fees paid or payable to you under this Agreement.
Disclaimers
We make no express or implied warranties or representations with respect
to the Program or any products sold through the Program (including,
without limitation, warranties of fitness, merchantability,
non-infringement, or any implied warranties arising out of a course of
performance, dealing, or trade usage). In addition, we make no
representation that the operation of our site will be uninterrupted or
error-free, and we will not be liable for the consequences of any
interruptions or errors.

YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS

AGREEMENT AND AGREE TO ALL ITS TERMS AND

ANY REPRESENTATION, GUARANTEE, OR STATEMENT OTHER
THAN AS SET FORTH IN THIS AGREEMENT.
Miscellaneous
This Agreement will be governed by the laws of the United States and the
state of Texas, without reference to rules governing choice of laws. You
may not assign this Agreement, by operation of law or otherwise, without
our prior written consent. Subject to that restriction, this Agreement will
be binding on, inure to the benefit of, and be enforceable against the
parties and their respective successors and assigns. Our failure to enforce
your strict performance of any provision of this Agreement will not
constitute a waiver of our right to subsequently enforce such provision or
any other provision of this Agreement.

Ssu-ma Chìen gives the following biography of Sun Tzu:
Sun Tzu Wu was a native of the Chì State. His Art of War brought him
to the notice of Ho Lu, King of Wu. Ho Lu said to him: "I have carefully
perused your 13 chapters. May I submit your theory of managing soldiers
to a slight test?"
Sun Tzu replied: "You may."
Ho Lu asked: "May the test be applied to women?"
The answer was again in the affirmative, so arrangements were made to
bring 180 ladies out of the Palace. Sun Tzu divided them into two
companies, and placed one of the King's favorite concubines at the head
of each. He then bade them all take spears in their hands, and addressed
them thus: "I presume you know the difference between front and back,
right hand and left hand?"
The girls replied: Yes.
Sun Tzu went on: "When I say "Eyes front," you must look straight
ahead. When I say "Left turn," you must face towards your left hand.
When I say "Right turn," you must face towards your right hand. When I
say "About turn," you must face right round towards your back."
Again the girls assented. The words of command having been thus
explained, he set up the halberds and battle-axes in order to begin the
drill. Then, to the sound of drums, he gave the order "Right turn." But the
girls only burst out laughing. Sun Tzu said: "If words of command are
not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, then the
general is to blame."
So he started drilling them again, and this time gave the order "Left turn,"
whereupon the girls once more burst into fits of laughter. Sun Tzu: "If
words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly
understood, the general is to blame. But if his orders ARE clear, and the
soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers."
So saying, he ordered the leaders of the two companies to be beheaded.
Now the king of Wu was watching the scene from the top of a raised
pavilion; and when he saw that his favorite concubines were about to be
executed, he was greatly alarmed and hurriedly sent down the following
message: "We are now quite satisfied as to our general's ability to handle
troops. If We are bereft of these two concubines, our meat and drink will
lose their savor. It is our wish that they shall not be beheaded."

the general of his forces, there are certain commands of His Majesty
which, acting in that capacity, I am unable to accept."
Accordingly, he had the two leaders beheaded, and straightway installed
the pair next in order as leaders in their place. When this had been done,
the drum was sounded for the drill once more; and the girls went through
all the evolutions, turning to the right or to the left, marching ahead or
wheeling back, kneeling or standing, with perfect accuracy and precision,
not venturing to utter a sound. Then Sun Tzu sent a messenger to the
King saying: "Your soldiers, Sire, are now properly drilled and
disciplined, and ready for your majesty's inspection. They can be put to
any use that their sovereign may desire; bid them go through fire and
water, and they will not disobey."
But the King replied: "Let our general cease drilling and return to camp.
As for us, We have no wish to come down and inspect the troops."
Thereupon Sun Tzu said: "The King is only fond of words, and cannot
translate them into deeds."
After that, Ho Lu saw that Sun Tzu was one who knew how to handle an
army, and finally appointed him general. In the west, he defeated the
Chù State and forced his way into Ying, the capital; to the north he put
fear into the States of Chì and Chin, and spread his fame abroad amongst
the feudal princes. And Sun Tzu shared in the might of the King.

landed. But soon the Martians reveal their true nature as death machines 100-feet tall rise
up from the pit and begin laying waste to the surrounding land. Wells quickly moves the
story from the countryside to the evacuation of London itself and the loss of all hope as
England's military suffers defeat after defeat. With horror his narrator describes how the
Martians suck the blood from living humans for sustenance, and how it's clear that man

About Grandmaster Marcin Kaminski
Marcin Kaminski was born October 3rd, 1977 in Wroclaw, Poland. Kaminski's chess career
began as a very successful junior player in the late 80's and early 90's. He was twice the World
Junior Champion, in 1989 (under 12 years old) and in 1991 (under 14 years old). He was the
silver medalist in the 1993 European under 16 Championships, and has also won many Polish
Junior Championships. Kaminski has been a member of the Polish Team in a number of
Olympiads and European Team Championships, and was twice the Olympic bronze medalist on sixth board in 1994 and on fifth board in 1998. He has won many tournaments, including
Katowice (one of the strongest Polish opens) in 1995, Lazne Bohdanec (Category 10) in 1996,
and Koszalin (one of the strongest European opens) in 1997. Kaminski attained the title of
International Grandmaster in 1996.

Excerpt from Art of War

Ssu-ma Chìen gives the following biography of Sun Tzu:
Sun Tzu Wu was a native of the Chì State. His Art of War brought him to the notice of Ho
Lu, King of Wu. Ho Lu said to him: "I have carefully perused your 13 chapters. May I submit
your theory of managing soldiers to a slight test?"
Sun Tzu replied: "You may."
Ho Lu asked: "May the test be applied to women?"
The answer was again in the affirmative, so arrangements were made to bring 180 ladies out
of the Palace. Sun Tzu divided them into two companies, and placed one of the King's
favorite concubines at the head of each. He then bade them all take spears in their hands, and
addressed them thus: "I presume you know the difference between front and back, right hand
and left hand?"
The girls replied: "Yes."
Sun Tzu went on: "When I say 'Eyes front', you must look straight ahead. When I say 'Left
turn', you must face towards your left hand. When I say 'Right turn', you must face towards
your right hand. When I say 'About turn', you must face right round towards your back."
Again the girls assented. The words of command having been thus explained, he set up the
halberds and battle-axes in order to begin the drill. Then, to the sound of drums, he gave the
order "Right turn". But the girls only burst out laughing. Sun Tzu said: "If words of command
are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, then the general is to
blame."
So he started drilling them again, and this time gave the order "Left turn", whereupon the girls
once more burst into fits of laughter. Sun Tzu: "If words of command are not clear and
distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, the general is to blame. But if his orders
ARE clear, and the soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers."
So saying, he ordered the leaders of the two companies to be beheaded. Now the king of Wu
was watching the scene from the top of a raised pavilion; and when he saw that his favorite
concubines were about to be executed, he was greatly alarmed and hurriedly sent down the
following message: "We are now quite satisfied as to our general's ability to handle troops. If
We are bereft of these two concubines, our meat and drink will lose their savor. It is our wish
that they shall not be beheaded."
Sun Tzu replied: "Having once received His Majesty's commission to be the general of his
forces, there are certain commands of His Majesty which, acting in that capacity, I am unable
to accept."
Accordingly, he had the two leaders beheaded, and straightway installed the pair next in order
as leaders in their place. When this had been done, the drum was sounded for the drill once
more; and the girls went through all the evolutions, turning to the right or to the left, marching
ahead or wheeling back, kneeling or standing, with perfect accuracy and precision, not
venturing to utter a sound. Then Sun Tzu sent a messenger to the King saying: "Your soldiers,
Sire, are now properly drilled and disciplined, and ready for your majesty's inspection. They
can be put to any use that their sovereign may desire; bid them go through fire and water, and
they will not disobey."
But the King replied: "Let our general cease drilling and return to camp. As for us, We have
no wish to come down and inspect the troops."
Thereupon Sun Tzu said: "The King is only fond of words, and cannot translate them into
deeds."
After that, Ho Lu saw that Sun Tzu was one who knew how to handle an army, and finally
appointed him general. In the west, he defeated the Chù State and forced his way into Ying,
the capital; to the north he put fear into the States of Chì and Chin, and spread his fame
abroad amongst the feudal princes. And Sun Tzu shared in the might of the King.
