When the Country Music Association (CMA) solicited firstround submissions in July for its 50th annual awards, it seemed
a no-brainer that Humble and Kind, a Tim McGraw single
that offers a cultural primer for strong character, would get
heavy consideration for song of the year.
Songs with social relevance invariably have a leg up in the
trophy battles, and when they capture the mood of a large swath
of people as Humble and Kind did, emerging in the midst
of increasing public chaos those songs have an almost unfair
advantage over competition that merely entertains.
We found out that Humble and Kind was
going to be No.1 on the Sunday that we woke
up to Orlando, says songwriter Lori McKenna.
It was such a strange day for me because you
wanted to celebrate, but it was such a heavy
day for everybody.
McKenna has accidentally set herself up for
a similar juxtaposition. The Bird & the Rif le,
a 10-song album that explores gritty life issues with an uncanny honesty, arrives at retail on July 29, the day after the Democratic
National C
onvention comes to a close. Its title
track employs a firearm as symbolism in a chalMcKENNA
lenged relationship the mans powerful, dangerous essence shuts down the womans freedom of self-expression and it hints at the c omplexities of a
hot-button issue.

H.O.L.Y. has worked very well for us, and sales are fantastic, Entercom
ommunications vp programming Mike Moore tells Billboard. It feels like a muC
sical evolution, or maturity, for them. Im really excited to hear the whole project.
KKBQ Houston director of operations Johnny Chiang concurs. H.O.L.Y.
has consistently tested power for us, which obviously meant a lot to me as a
programmer, he says. However, the song has had far greater implications
for FGL. If there were any doubts about Brian and Tylers potential longevity
in the format, H.O.L.Y should put those to rest.
As it crowns Country Airplay, H.O.L.Y. paces Hot Country
Songs and Country Streaming Songs for a 12th week each, leading
the latter list with 6.9 million U.S. streams (up 4 percent). On
Country Digital Songs, it drops to No. 2 after 11 frames on top
(61,000, down 1 percent).
VICTORIOUS VICE Miranda Lamberts Vice (RCA
Nashville), released July 18, swoops in at No. 1 on Country
Digital Songs with 64,000 sold in its first week, marking her
second No.1; Somethin Bad, with Carrie Underwood, also
launched at the summit (June 7, 2014). On Hot Country Songs,
Vice opens at No. 2 to become her highest debut, passing the
No. 5 start for Bad.
Concurrently, Vice arrives as Lamberts highest debut on Country Airplay,
at No. 18 (14.7 million in audience), fueled in part by hourly plays following its
release on participating iHeartMedia-owned stations. The entrance tops the
No. 26 start of Automatic (Feb. 22, 2014).
Penned by Lambert, Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally, Vice is the
first single from her forthcoming sixth studio album, expected later in 2016. Its
also Lamberts first new music since her divorce from Blake Shelton.
TOP 10 NEWS Chris Lanes debut single, Fix (Big Loud), enters the Hot
Country Songs top 10 (11-10). On Country Airplay, it bumps 5-4 (42.3 million,
up 5 percent). Plus Kelsea Ballerinis Peter Pan (Black River) hops 11-10 on
Country Airplay (28.7 million, up 12 percent). Her third top 10 follows the careerlaunching No. 1s Love Me Like You Mean It and Dibs.

AN ENHANCED VERSION OF EVERY ISSUE, FEATURING:
Were All Somebody From Somewhere (Dot/Big Machine Label Group), the first
solo album from Steven Tyler, bounds in at No. 1 on Billboards Top Country
Albums chart (dated Aug. 6), selling 17,000 copies in its first week (ending
July 21), according to Nielsen Music. On the all-genre, consumption-based
Billboard 200, it starts at No. 19, with 18,000 equivalent album units.
The longtime leader of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Aerosmith coproduced the album, which was recorded in Nashville, and co-wrote 12 of its
15 tracks. The first two singles, Love Is Your Name and Red, White & You,
peaked at Nos. 19 and 29 on Hot Country Songs and Nos. 33 and
46 on Country Airplay, respectively. The title track is the newly
released third single.
Tyler, who confirmed in a June 21 interview on SiriusXMs The
Howard Stern Show that Aerosmith will embark on a f arewell
tour in 2017, is currently touring solo. Steven TylerOut on a
Limb kicked off July 2 at the Venetian Theatre in Las Vegas, and
will hit 19 cities.
Tyler follows a trail of artists from other genres (typically rock)
that have landed in Nashville, including fellow Rock and Roll
TYLER
Hall of Famers and Big Machine labelmates Cheap Trick. In recent years, Darius Rucker has notably conquered country radio
after leading Hootie & The Blowfish to mainstream success. He has earned
six No.1s on Country Airplay and four on Top Country Albums.

2016 midyear country music charts.
Stapletons Traveller album is the most popular country set of the first half
of 2016, according to Nielsen Music, with 931,000 equivalent album units
earned in the tracking period of Jan. 1-June 30, 2016. (Equivalent album
units comprise traditional album sales, track-equivalent albums [TEA] and
streaming-equivalent albums [SEA].) Hunts Montevallo is the No. 2 most
popular album, with 444,000 units, and Rhetts Tangled Up ranks at No. 4
with 408,000 units. Stapletons set is also the top-selling country album of
the first half of the year, with 746,000 copies sold.
Overall country album sales dropped 10 percent compared with a year ago
(12,057,000 sold versus 13,355,000).
Among all genres of music, overall album consumption (album sales plus
TEA and SEA) totaled 279.9 million units for the first six months of 2016
(up 9 percent compared with 257 million for the first half of 2015). Country
albums represented 8.4 percent of the 2016 figure.
Hunt and Rhett lead countrys midyear on-demand streaming lists, as
Rhetts Die a Happy Man is the most-streamed song overall (audio and
video combined) with 87,737,000 streams. Its also the top audio stream
(55,465,000). Hunts Break Up in a Small Town is the top streamed video,
with 32,307,000 streams. Interestingly, Taylor Swifts 2009s hit video You
Belong With Me remains popular, clocking in at No. 5 on the Mid-Year Top
10 On-Demand Country Video Streams tally with 19,702,000 streams.
Rhett also landed two titles among the 10 best-selling digital tracks during
the period, as Die a Happy Man finished No. 3 with 711,000 downloads and
T-Shirt fit snugly at No. 8 with 431,000 sales. Big Machine Label Group
had the three best-selling tracks: In addition to Die a Happy Man, Tim McGraws Humble and Kind topped the list with 747,000 downloads, followed
by Florida Georgia Lines H.O.L.Y., with 730,000.

MUSIC NOTES
Hillary Scott & The Scott Family showcased their new album, Love Remains
(due July 29), on July 19 at the Bell Tower in Nashville. The family i ncluding mother Linda
Davis, father Lang Scott and sister Riley Scott
offered impressively tight harmonies and emotional performances, including Hillarys read of
the Tom Douglas-penned title track. With a band
that c ontained H
illarys husband, Chris Tyrrell,
on drums and former Edens Edge member Dean
Berner on Dobro, the evening also featured onstage appearances by album co-producer Ricky
Skaggs and The Whites Cheryl White. Lady
Antebellum bandmate Dave Haywood was in
SCOTT
the audience, and is apparently in cahoots with
Scott and Charles Kelley on Lady As next project, with time blocked out to work in earnest on an album this fall.
July 25
2015 Kenny Chesney and Jason Aldean coheadline the first country concert in the history
of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The package
also includes Brantley Gilbert, Cole Swindell
and Old Dominion.
Among the most notable impressions from the new Country Music Hall of Fame
exhibit Homegrown: Zac Brown Band is the length of time that has been invested in the bands rise. While Chicken Fried launched the group into the
mainstream in 2008, the actual hand-written lyric sheet is pretty much chicken
scratch in a notebook that was started in 1992. The 2012 single Goodbye in
Her Eyes is likewise in a notebook begun in 2001. The display which includes
instruments, clothing and a dragon-head stage prop gives a sense of the time
the act put in, but its merely a hint at the drama that went with it. Frontman Zac
Brown told media that his group should have slid off a mountain years ago,
traveling in a vehicle that broke down repeatedly, messing with its schedules
and patience. You cant fake the chemistry that comes from those things,
added Brown. The exhibit remains open through June 18, 2017.
July 28
1971 Charley Pride records Kiss an Angel Good Mornin at
Nashvilles RCA Studios.
1956 Three weeks after his first appearance on the Grand Ole
Opry, Johnny Cash returns to Nashvilles Ryman Auditorium for
his first performance as a member.
If the music thing ever falls through, Willie Nelson and Maren Morris are
definitely establishing their brands in other quarters. After several years of
discussion, Nelsons new line of weed, Willies Reserve Cannabis, is ahem
rolling out in Washington and Colorado. Nelson played a show celebrating
the launch on July 23 in Redmond, Wash., and has another set for July 30 in
Greenwood, Colo. Morris has teamed with Wayfair, an online home f urnishings
company, to offer her own selection of patio home goods, including a fire pit,
a chaise lounge for two and longhorn skull-shaped wall decor. The collection
is available through Aug. 22.
As Kenny Rogers slowly winds toward retirement from touring, his 2016
Christmas outing an annual trek he has made since 1981 will be his last
holiday jaunt. The dates begin Nov. 25 in Independence, Mo., and conclude
Dec. 23 in Westbury, N.Y. Meanwhile, two of Rogers former road partners
have their own holiday attractions planned. The Oak Ridge Boys have 28
bookings on the calendar, beginning Nov. 15 in Branson, Mo., and ending
Dec. 22 in Burlington, Iowa. Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers will launch
a 38-date Country Christmas residence at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel on
Nov. 11. The Gatlins engagement runs through Dec. 25, which also marks
their 40th anniversary as Grand Ole Opry members.

Thomas invited him to a taping of the CBS show he was in at the time, Love
& War, then out to dinner. That was the start of a relationship that grew from
cautious to close over time.
Thomas eventually hired Harding to work as an assistant on Love & War,
and recalls with a laugh, After CBS canceled my show and asked me to leave
the lot, they offered J.T. another job.
Both men now delight in their relationship, which Harding describes as
something more like fraternity brothers than father and son. They detail each
others accomplishments with pride and share memories of vacations theyve
enjoyed, including their annual trips to New York, where Thomas for many
years was tasked with the tradition of knocking a meatball off the top of a
Christmas tree with a f ootball as a
guest on a pre-holiday episode of
Late Night With David Letterman.
Thomas has travelled around the
country to see Harding perform at
various w riters nights.
Jay and I have a real wild,
fun relationship, says H arding.
Were ver y close. We can be
pretty o bnoxious, but its fun.
That warmth also extends to the
rest of Thomas family, including
his wife and 19- and 22-year-old
sons, who have known Harding
since they were small. Hes a huge
part of our family, Thomas says of
his oldest son.
Thomas also met the parents
who raised Harding, and is e ffusive
in his praise for them. Theyre the
two greatest people that any kid
could have, he says, before joking, I thought of sending my two
kids to them to raise, the two that I kept. (Larry Harding has since died.)
In 2014, Thomas and Harding got a chance to work together for the first
time since Love & War. New York playwright Peter Zinn wrote a musical
featuring many of Hardings hits, and Thomas was cast in a role when the
show, Somewhere With You, played at the New York Musical Theatre Festival.
Harding calls the experience a total blast.
The bond between them is evident when they take good-natured jabs at
each other in separate telephone interviews. Harding quips that Thomas star
on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is so out of the way you have to take an Uber
to see it. He adds: Im lucky that Jay didnt raise me. Id probably be even
more self-centered than I am, and dress in Tommy Bahama clothes like it
was Miami Vice day every day. Thomas, meanwhile, describes Harding as
a total square and kids him about his frugal lifestyle, beat-up car, OK
apartment and penchant for buying the stupidest gifts.
They celebrate both their differences and similarities. Hes totally different
than me, Harding says of Thomas. He thinks The Beatles are idiots. Hes
not into any kind of music at all. All he thinks about is sports, and I dont r eally
care about sports.
But Thomas says of his son, I see a lot of myself in him, particularly when
Harding performs. Hes really great onstage, says Thomas. Theres a lot
of showmanship there were very much alike.
Both agree Harding also inherited Thomas drive and ambition. Says Harding, Jay said that when he gave me up for adoption, he always felt I would be
OK, because I would have him in me. It turns out he was right.
