3 POINT FLEXURE BEND ATTACHMENT RATED TO 25kN

MECHANICAL TESTS ON TERRAZZO TILES

BS EN 13748-1
99-1002379
Description
This 3 point flexure bend attachment is designed in
accordance to BS EN 13748 to determine the
flexural strength of Terrazzo Tiles. The image to the
right illustrates this attachment mounted on a
Tinius Olsen twin column testing machine. The
attachment has a self-aligning single upper point of
contact which is attached to a nose piece, and a
lower twin points of contact, one of which is self
aligning and is mounted to the base unit of the
machine. The Lower twin points of contact have a
T-Slot variable span.
Prior to testing, the specimen would rest on top of
the lower points of contact, and the upper point of
contact would be lowered to make contact with the
specimen at zero force.

single upper Point of Contact, as well as the Lower
Twin Points of Contact.

Key test parameters

Specimen dimensions are that of the manufactured
product length inducing bar to be at least the width
of specimen upper & lower points of contact 20
1mm radius.
Test speed not specified, but required max load
should be achieved within 45 15 seconds.

According to BS EN 13748-1
The mean breaking strength of four specimens shall be greater or equal to 5.0 MPa.
No individual failure stress to be less that 4.0 MPa
Tile surface area 1100cm, breaking load to be > 2.5kN
Tile surface area > 1100cm, breaking load to be > 3.0kN
Results
Flexural strength T-MPa & breaking load in kN which is
calculated through the Tinius Olsen software.
Mean value of 4 specimens reported to the nearest 0.1mpa for
strength & 0.1kN for load.

You will notice that the front Point of

Contact of the lower attachment is selfaligning. This is to accommodate the profile
of the tiles which may be uneven. Keeping
the application of the force perpendicular to
the tile.
