Circulatory and Muscular System

By: Rebecca, Dean, Ryan and Sebastian

Circulatory System
Pumps Blood and Nutrients Through
the Body

How does it work?

Circulates blood, which transports oxygen, nutrients,
co2, hormones, and blood cells
Helps in fighting disease, maintaining body
temperature, pH level, homeostasis

The 2 Systems
Lymphatic- carries lymph (white blood cells)
Open system
Cardiovascular- carries blood
Closed system
Contains heart, veins, arteries, capillaries, and blood vessels

What does it do?

Transports and circulate blood throughout the body

Delivers nutrients and oxygen to all cells in the body

Consists of the heart and the blood vessels running through the entire body

Arteries carry blood away from the heart; the veins carry it back to the heart

Major Tissues

Epithelial tissue - protective tissue, covers most of body, found in the

arteries, capillaries, veins and the heart

Muscle tissue - enables us to move certain parts of our body makes up the
heart

Nervous tissue - reacts to stimuli, made up of neurons, a specialized type of

cell, important bc it helps brain transmit messages to the circulatory system

Connective tissue - makes up the structure of the entire circulatory system

Major Cells
Red blood cells- carry oxygen and carbon dioxide to different places
in the body
White blood cells- help the body defend itself against infections and
diseases, discovers and defends against germs and bacteria
Platelets- small blood cell fragments, helps the blood to clot
especially in an injury

How does it function?

The heart pumps blood and nutrients
throughout the body to all the cells and the veins
bring the blood back to be replenished.

Muscular System
Voluntary and Involuntary Muscles
Throughout the Body

How does it work?

It works when the nervous system signals the muscles to
contract and in doing so, the muscle groups move
The muscles pull on the tendons, which then moves the
bone

What does it do?

Moves the skeleton to allow us to move.
Controls voluntary and involuntary actions.

Consists of three types: cardiac, skeletal, and smooth.

Maintains body posture and body functions

Major Tissues
Skeletal muscle: Carries out everyday body movements,
support the body, and maintains the posture of the body.
Smooth muscle: Responsible for the contracting the hollow
organs, such as blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, and the
bladder
Cardiac muscle: The muscle of the heart, it is self contracting
and must maintain a rhythmic contraction

How does it function?

The brain sends a message to contract the muscles,
which pull on the tendons, which then moves the bone

Muscular and
Circulatory
How do they work together?

How do they interact?

The blood flowing to your muscles allows for them to

move because the circulatory system gets oxygen to the
muscles

Construction Plan
We will have two water bottles representing both chambers of the heart. We will have clear pipes coming out of
the bottles representing the veins and arteries. We will have water to represent our blood. We will use rubber
bands to represent the muscles contracting in our body. The rubber bands will squeeze the tubes and bottle.
This will send the blood back to the bottle, representing the shared function of the circulatory system and the
muscle system, which is to compress the veins to send the blood back to the heart. There will be little beads or
pieces of clay to show the nutrients and that will show the function of the circulatory system, which is to move
nutrients and oxygen to the different organs. The rubber bands can attach to a long piece PVC, which shows the
function of the muscular system, which is to move the body.

Functions We Are Testing

1. The ability of the circulatory system to send nutrients to
the organs
2. The ability of the muscles to contract and move the
bones
3. The ability of the muscles to contract deep-lying veins,
which sends the blood streaming back into the heart

Materials List
Bottle - Heart
Water - The Blood
Clear tubes - Veins, Arteries, Capillaries
Rubber Bands - Muscles: different colors represent different muscles
Pieces of clay - the nutrients that the blood is carrying to the muscles
Red- red blood cells carrying oxygen
Yellow- nutrients
