Bedford has hunting opportunities in thousands of acres of
public land that can be used to track down wild turkeys, ducks,
rabbits, deer, and several other wildlife. Hunting is allowed on
the Blue Ridge Parkway land. The Wheat Valley Lodge and
Hunting Preserve provides accommodation for traveling
hunters.

Fishing

Bedfords vast rivers, streams, and lakes make 6ishing
convenient and ful6illing. Recreational 6ishing can take place at
Bedfords Liberty Lake Park, City Lake, Smith Mountain Lake,
Rock Hollow Trout Farm, Abbott Lakes, as well as Jefferson
National Forest streams. Chartered and guided 6ishing trips are

canoes can be rented or brought to Mitchells Point Marina at
Smith Mountain Lake . Houseboats, pontoons, wave-runners, and
6ishing boats can be rented at Parrot Cove at Smith Mountain
Lake.

Bedford County, located in Virginias Blue Ridge Mountain


region, was founded in 1754 by John Russell, the Fourth Duke of
Bedford. The Town of Liberty, now called the Town of Bedford,
has held the county seat since 1782. In 1795, Thomas Jefferson
built his home, Poplar Forest, as a personal getaway. Bedford is
home to several natural attractions including Smith Mountain
Lake , Peaks of Otter, Appalachian Trail, and the Blue Ridge
Parkway. The county holds a rich history, which combined with
its natural features, attracts tourists seeking
adventure in a peaceful setting. Unincorporated towns in
Bedford County include: Big Island, Chamblissburg, Forest,
Goode, Hardy, Huddleston, Moneta, Montvale, New London,
Stewartsville, and Thaxton.

Smith Mountain Lake- being the second largest lake in Virginia,


Smith Mountain Lake is the place to go for several outdoor
water activities. This includes boating, sailing, 6ishing,
swimming, water skiing, or just lounging on the beach. Smith
Mountain Lake State Park is home to camping areas, cabins,
camping lodge, and picnic areas that make it easily accessible
for an extended stay. The Smith Mountain Lake State Park
offers a 500 foot beach, which is life guarded during operating
hours and offers concessions and special nature, history
programs throughout the year.

James River- Virginias James River makes it way into Bedford
County and provides the county with wildlife for 6ishing and
recreation

National D-Day Memorial-

Opened in 2001, the memorial receives an average of 75,000
visitors a year to honor veterans involved in the D-Day
invasion during WWII. Compared to the rest of the country,
the town of Bedford suffered the greatest per capita loss of
life during the invasion.
