Milestone as RAF University gets govt

recognition

nother milestone was attained in the education sector after

the recognition of the second Islamic university in the country by the government.
RAF International University on Tuesday joined the list of government accredited higher learning institutions after the education
cabinet secretary Fred Matiangi presented a Letter of Interim Authority (LIA).
In 2013, Umma University which is managed by Africa Muslims
Agency became the first Islamic university in the country after it
was granted a Letter of Interim Authority.
The Letter of Interim Authority is the first step in attaining full government accreditation. Under the Universities Act, 2012, LIA allows an institution to provide university education and award degrees to graduands.
While granting the letter, Matiangi said it was a demonstration that
the institution had fulfilled the conditions for setting up a university and expressed optimism that RAF International University will

positively contribute to countrys national development strategy.

He pledged to provide support to the institution noting that under
a new government policy, it will also be able to admit government
sponsored students.
Dr. Matiangi praised the leadership behind the University as trustworthy, patriotic and committed to provide quality university education.
In his speech, the CS urged universities to adhere to the statutes
and regulations that guide provision of university education warning that institutions that flout the guidelines will be closed down.
He said violation of the standards by some universities was hurting reputation of Kenya and the education system in general. We
are going to take difficult and painful decisions to restore order in
University Education, Dr. Matiangi noted as he expressed concern that some universities are admitting people without minimum
entry requirements for university education.

Boost for Islamic bond plan as Kenya join IFSB

Kenya's appetite to tap and facilitate the

issuance of Islamic bonds got a boost after its admission as an associate member
of the council of the Islamic Financial Services Board(IFSB).
The decision to admit Kenya's Capital Markets Authority was reached during the 29th
IFSB council meeting held in cairo,Egypt
early this month.
Islamic Financial Services Board is based
in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and is the global standards-setting body, which promotes
the development of a prudent and transparent Islamic financial services industry.
The move provides Kenya with an opportunity to invest in the Islamic bonds sector.
In January, during the First International
Islamic Finance Conference for Africa held

in Nairobi, National Treasury Cabinet secretary Henry Rotich, said the government
was reviving plans to tap the growing appetite for Islamic bonds.
Speaking to the press last Friday while
confirming the development, Capital Markets Authority chief executive Paul Muthaura said the agencys membership in
IFSB is a key step towards the development of Islamic finance in Kenya. He said
Vision 2030 identifies financial services as
a priority sector expected to play a central
role as a key facilitator in the achievement
of the vision.
To help diversify the product portfolio,
Kenya has for some time now been laying
the foundation for making the country a financial services hub, with one of the focus

areas being its emergence as an Islamic

financial hub.
According to the IFSBs Islamic Financial
Services Industry Stability Report 2016,
the global Islamic financial services industry reached an overall total value of $1.88
trillion (Sh188 trillion) in 2015, with expectations of market size growth to $3.4 trillion
(Sh340 trillion) by end of 2018, an 81 per
cent growth.Kenya is one of the countries
identified as prime markets for Islamic finance due to the structure of its financial
market which is one of the best in Africa.
The global market for Sukuk or Islamic
bonds has expanded rapidly in response
to increasing demand from governments,
organisations and individual investors for
Shariah compliant equity.

Ksh 700,000 raised in Amalemba Waqf fundraiser

Over Sh700,000 was raised during a fundraising event for the construction of a Waqf
project at Amalemba Taqwa Mosque and
Madrassa within Kakamega town.
The chief guest at the event held at the precinct of the mosque last Saturday was the
Kakamega based businessman Abdalla Ismail Wanyama who called on Muslims to
participate in development programs for
progress.
Addressing participants at the fundraising
function, Abdalla said it is imperative for
Muslim institutions to set up sustainable
projects to be self-reliant and reduce the
syndrome of donor dependence.
He further spoke on the importance of
Muslim organizations to invest in projects
to help in sustaining their activities and additionally contribute to improve on the social economic condition and livelihood of
Muslims as he observed that progress can

be achieved through self-funded projects

such hospitals, schools,colleges and other
social amenities.
The businessman urged Muslims to come
together and utilize their resources and
God given wealth in supporting the setting
up viable projects to economically uplift the
situation of the community, stressing on
the need to be proactive rather than wait
for support and donations to initiate development projects from outside the country.
Abdalla further advised Muslims to sustain
the spirit of mobilizing resources in support
of Islamic projects noting that this remains
a critical element in driving development
programmes in the Muslim community.
On his part the Mosque chairman, Sheikh
Ali Muhammad Ali thanked well-wishers
,donors and the local Muslims for their
generous contributions towards the support of the Waqf project and appealed to

Benefits and Virtues of Salawat

There are numerous benefits in sending
salah and salaam upon the Prophet sal
Allahu alayhi wa sallam. The fact that
there are benefits for the person who
performs this noble deed is one of the
beautiful aspects of our deen. There is
no such thing as a futile good deed in Islam; every good deed carries a benefit,
even if it is a small one, for the one who
engages in it.
You are following the way of Allah azza
wa jal and His Honorable Angels. Allah
and His angels send blessings on the
Prophet. (33:56)
Your salah on him reaches him sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam. We have lost our
chance in this life to see and interact
with our Messenger sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam, but out of Allah's Great Mercy
He has allowed our duaa to reach him
no matter how far or close we are to his
grave. It was narrated that Abdullah ibn
Mas'ood (may Allah be pleased with him)
said: The Messenger of Allah sal Allahu
alayhi wa sallam said: Allah has angels
who go around on earth, conveying to
me the salaam of my ummah. [Sunan
Nasaa'i, Saheeh Al-Albani]
The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam
will return your greeting. Abu Hurayrah
(May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi
wa sallam said, There is not one of you
who sends his greetings upon me except
that Allah returns the soul to my body (in
the grave) and I return his greeting. [Abu
Dawood, Saheeh Al-Albani]
Amplification of reward, removal of sins
and receiving the blessings of Allah. Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As (May Allah be
pleased with them) reported: I heard the
Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam saying: Whoever supplicates Allah to exalt my mention (i.e., send salah),
Allah will exalt his mention (i.e., send
salah)ten times and remove from him ten
sins and raise him ten degrees. [Muslim]
Jibreel alayhi salaam will send salah and
salaam upon you. AbdurRahman ibn Awf
(may Allah be pleased with him) said, I
came to the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam while he was in prostration and he
elongated his prostration and then said,
Jibreel came to me and he said, 'whoever sends blessings (salah) upon you, I
will send blessings on him, and whoever
sends greetings (salaam) upon you, I will
send greetings upon him,' so I prostrated
out of thankfulness to Allah.' [Haakim,
Saheeh Al-Albani]
Answering of one's duaa. Most of us
do not know that duaa is suspended
between the heavens and earth until
we send salawat on the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam. Umar radi Allahu
anhu said, Duaa is suspended between
heaven and earth and none of it is taken
up until you send blessings upon your
Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam. [AtTirmidhi, Hasan Al-Albani] The scholars
state that it is recommended (mustahabb) to include salawat in our duaa for

the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam.

The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam
invited the believers to make salah on
him. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah
(may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi
wa sallam said: Do not take your houses
as graves and do not take my grave as a
place of festivity (which you visit repeatedly). Send blessings upon me for your
greeting will reach me no matter where
you are. [Abu Dawood, Saheeh Al-Albani]
You will not be among the humiliated.
Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased
with him) reported: The Messenger of
Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said,
May his nose soil with dust in whose
presence mention is made of me and he
does not supplicate for me. [At-Tirmidhi,
Saheeh Al-Albaani] imam Nawawi rahimahullah states the saying 'may his nose
be rubbed in dust' means to suffer humiliation and disgrace. That is may such
person be humiliated and disgraced who
hears my name and does not invoke Allah's blessings upon me.
You will not be among the miserly. Ali
(May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah sal Allahu
alayhi wa sallam said, The miser is the
one in whose presence I am mentioned
but he does not supplicate for me. [AtTirmidhi, Saheeh Al-Albani]
You will not be among those that Jibreel
alayhi salaam made duaa against and
the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam
replied ameen (O Allah, grant it). It was
narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah
be pleased with him) said: The Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) ascended the minbar and said:
Ameen, ameen, ameen. It was said:
'O Messenger of Allah, you ascended
the minbar and said, 'ameen, ameen,
ameen. He said: Jibreel came to me
and said: 'If Ramadan comes and a person is not forgiven, he will enter Hell and
Allah will cast him far away. Say ameen.'
So I said ameen. He said: 'O Muhammad, if both or one of a person's parents
are alive and he does not honour them
and he dies, he will enter Hell and Allah
will cast him far away. Say ameen.' So
I said ameen. He said: 'If you are mentioned in a person's presence and he
does not send blessings upon you and
he dies, he will enter Hell and Allah will
cast him far away. Say ameen.' So I said
ameen. [ibn Hibbaan, Saheeh Al-Albani]
You will be among the closest to the
Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam on
a Day that will cause a child's hair to become grey. Ibn Mas'ood (May Allah be
pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam
said: The people who will be nearest to
me on the Day of Resurrection will be
those who supplicate Allah more often for
me. [At-Tirmidhi, Hasan li ghayrihi Al-Albani] imam Nawawi rahimahullah states,
Nearest to me signifies those who are

most entitled to my intercession.

Allah will love you and forgive you because
following the sunnah of the Prophet sal Allahu
alayhi wa sallam. Allah says, Say (O Muhammad to mankind): If you (really) love Allah then
follow me , Allah will love you and forgive you
your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (3:31)
Your love for the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam will increase. When you love someone,
your mind is filled with thoughts of them. By
constantly making duaa for the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam whenever his name is
mentioned, you are making a conscious effort
to remember him. Put in the effort to internalize the salawat whenever you make them and
understand who you are making duaa for, and
insha'Allah your love for him will increase tremendously, alayhi salaatu wa salaam.
Obligatory and Recommended Times to
send Salawat
It has been established that sending salawat
on the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wassallam
is a noble deed in Islam, but we must also be
aware that there are prescribed times for it and
times that this act is not recommended or allowed. Also, for specific supplications that the
Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wassallam taught
us, we must only say what he narrated without
any modifications.
Ibn Hajar, rahimahullah says, "The wording of
dhikrs is tawqeefi (i.e., acts of worship which
must be done as prescribed in the texts), and
they have special characteristics that cannot
be subject to analogy. So one must adhere to
the wording as it was narrated." [Al-Fath AlBaari]
The obligatory and recommended times are as
follows:
During the tashahhud in prayer. Shaykh AlAlbani, rahimahullah gives a detailed description on sending salah in the tashahhud as well
as some important notes on this act in general
in his book "The Prophet's Prayer Described".
After the adhan. Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As
(May Allah be pleased with them) reported: "I
heard the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alayhi
wassallam saying, 'When you hear the adhan,
repeat what the Mu'adhdhin says. Then ask Allah to exalt my mention because everyone who
does so will receive in return ten rewards from
Allah. Then beseech Allah to grant me Al-Wasilah, which is a high rank in Jannah, fitting for
only one of Allah's slaves; and I hope that I will
be that man. If any one asks Al-Wasilah for me,
it becomes incumbent upon me to intercede for
him'." [Muslim]
In another hadeeth, Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas
(May Allah be pleased with him) reported: "The
Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wassallam said,
'He who says after the adhan: {Ash-hadu an
that there is no true god except Allah Alone;
He has no partners and that Muhammad is His
slave and Messenger; I am content with Allah
as my Rabb, with Muhammad as my Messenger and with Islam as my Deen)}, his sins will
be forgiven'." [Muslim]

Prophet Muhammad: A husband like no other

In the Quran, Allah has described Prophet Muhammad (peace be

upon him) as the role model we should emulate and follow in every
aspect of life. There has certainly been for you in the Messenger
of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often. Quran
(33:21)
He played many roles during his life, but the one role that he took
on very early as a youth, and which stayed as a constant role in his
life till his death at the age 63, was that of a husband.
Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa sallam was a husband even before
becoming a Prophet, father, battalion leader, judge, or leader of
the Muslim ummah.
Marriage played a central role during his life. Allah decreed marriage as a means for him to gain financial stability and security
(via his wife Khadjiahs ample wealth); to raise his young children
(by marrying Saudah after Khadijahs death); to form important
liaisons (e.g. by marrying Umm Habibah); to establish Islamic laws
(e.g. marrying his cousin Zainab abolished an Arab custom that
prohibited marrying an adopted sons divorcee); and to spread the
message of Islam far and wide (e.g. his young wife Aishah propagated over 2000 narrations, and excelled in jurisprudence, especially that related to sexual intimacy and female impurity).
However, before Muhammad became a Prophet of Allah and the
official torch-bearer of the Deen of Islam, he was married only
once, to an older lady who had been widowed twice already
Khadijah.
Spent youth happily married to just one woman, 15 years
older
Despite living in an extremely misogynistic and patriarchal society where men did whatever they wanted and females were oppressed, exploited and killed with open abandon; where men married an unrestricted number of women according to their whims
and fancies, Muhammad salallahu alayhi sallam stayed chaste as
a young man, getting married only after an older woman proposed
to him through a third person, and his guardian gave him the goahead.
Belonging to an influential and honorable Arab clan, he could have
married a multitude of women had he so wished while he was
young i.e. from the age of 25-40; a period when a young mans
sexual desire peaks, but he did not. Instead, he remained married
only to Khadijah until her death.
Besides his chastity, fidelity and loyalty to the one wife he had
during the first two-thirds of his life, Prophet Muhammads shining
qualities as an older husband to all his other wives, also became
apparent during the last 20 years of his life.
It is not just the love, care, and forgiveness he showed to his wives
that prove his lofty character as a husband, but his decency and
chivalry as a righteous man shines forth even more so through
what he did not do to them, even though he had the authority to:
He never rebuked his wives in front of others
It is common for many husbands to rebuke their wives for the
slightest mistake when they are stressed out e.g. not cooking their
favorite meal properly, or on time; or for spoiling their shirt while
doing the laundry.
Raising his voice at his wife, telling her off with a big scowl on the
face in front of others, telling her to shut up or get lost during a
favorite sports game or TV show, or outright calling her names
when she shouts at, annoys or nags him these are things not
unheard of for some, if not most, husbands nowadays.
We can imagine how a husband would react if someone sent him
food that he likes, and his wife, in a fit of sudden jealousy, threw
the dish on to the floor, causing the food to spill and the utensil to
break.
How do you think most husbands today would react to such a situation? Dont you think that most would immediately tell off their
wife? Dont you think theyll immediately order her sternly to clean
up the mess, in front of the men witnessing the incident?
Guess what? This actually happened with the Prophet, yet he

didnt shout at his wife, and cleaned up the mess himself. Being
the just man that he was, however, he did command her to compensate for the broken utensil!
Aloofness: His strictest reprimand
The Prophet showed immense patience when one or more of his
wives behaved emotionally in his presence, whether in public or
private.
He never called them names, nor did he ever lift a finger to strike
any one of them, even when theyd make him very angry.
The most severe method of discipline or reprimand that he used
when he was angry at one or more of his wives, was ignoring them
(not talking to them) and not visiting them in their private quarters,
for a certain period of time, which meant that he turned away from
them sexually as well.
This proved to be a very effective method of correcting his wives
when they angered him for reasons disliked by Allah and not endorsed by Islam.
He was not controlling
Many new brides confess to receiving a clear list of donts from
their husbands as soon as the nikah ceremony is over, even before the wedding flowers have wilted.
Such restrictions from new husbands are a sign of an underlying insecurity that manifests itself in the form of paranoid possessiveness, irrational jealousy, and an attempt to exert an extreme
level of control over their wife thwarting and suppressing her
movement, her halal hobbies and interests, and even her bubbly
personality.
The reason that husbands usually provide for such strictness, is
the superior rights afforded to them by Islam, as their wives guardians/maintainers, to put such restrictions on them for the overall
good of the home.
However, the real reason is their fear of losing her love, loyalty,
focus and obedience. The prime example of this is when a righteous girl, who habitually observes all the limits of Islam from even
before her marriage, becomes a target of manipulation and control
from her husband.
A clear test of whether a husband possesses true gheerah (praiseworthy jealousy) or is just controlling, is whether or not he obeys
the rules and restrictions of Islam himself.
Since Allah has ordered us in the Quran to always take Prophet
Muhammad as our role model, we should recall when he (if ever)
tried to control his wives in such a way?
Advocate of foreplay during marital intimacy
In some cultures, manliness is equated with certain manners, beliefs and habits that border on arrogance and uncouthness that
is prohibited in Islam, e.g. overeating and belching loudly; pickContinued To Page 10

Prophet Muhammad: The Best Example for Youth Today

Muhammad is not the father of any man

among you, but he is the Messenger of
Allah, and the Seal of the Prophets, and
Allah has full knowledge of all things.
Al-Ahzab 33:40
Young people today see a lot of pomp and
ceremony when it comes to politicians
and leaders. It seems as though the more
authority you have, the more the red carpet is laid out, the more special attire and
finery you are expected to wear, and the
more freedom you have to express your
opinions whether they are held up by
evidence or not, and no matter how much
they may offend others.
But let's take a look at the final Prophet
(peace and blessings be upon him) and
see the stark difference between what is
now and what was before.
"Which one is Muhammad?" So humble
was the Messenger of Allah (peace and
blessings be upon him) that strangers
looking for him in the mosque in Madinah
had to ask this. Sitting in the row of believers for the daily prayers, Muhammad
(peace and blessings be upon him), with
his simple and modest bearing, could not
be distinguished from anyone else.
He was so calm, so dignified, and so peaceful that no one could single him out as the

leader. Children and youth could approach

him to receive a warm greeting or to ask
this great, yet humble, man a question or
some advice. In quiet prayer he looked
like any other simple man. There was no
sign here of the great warrior, the skillful
negotiator in times of war and peace, the
statesman. There was no sign either that
this was the man, from among all men,
was chosen to receive the Creator's final
message to mankind.
In the mosque his focus was on Allah alone.
He was like every Muslim who enters the
mosque to pray. And yet, unlike any other
Muslim, he had been chosen as the Seal
of the Prophets, the most honorable and
the noblest of men. He was the one whom
Allah selected to guide all mankind.
Disadvantages in Youth
Orphaned by the age of 6 and born in a
relatively unimportant region of the world
to a simple family, Muhammad could neither read nor write. When commanded by
the Angel Jibreel to recite the first glorious
verses of the Qur'an, Muhammad could
only respond that he was unable to read
or recite them.
Muhammad (peace and blessings be
upon him) had neither power nor wealth.
He possessed none of the things that the
world considers important. Yet Allah chose
him from all men in the world to be what
the Qur'an calls "a mercy to mankind."
A Mercy
This is the role that young Muslims should
take on in this world that is so full of turmoil and hate. The youth are the standardbearers of the message of Muhammad
(peace and blessings be upon him) and it
is a message of mercy.
In his person, the Prophet (peace and
blessings be upon him) was a mercy to all
the people on earth. One so kind, so pious,
so devout in prayer and obedience to the
will of Allah had been chosen as the guide
for mankind.
We should ask ourselves, how closely are
we living our lives according to the message of Muhammad (peace and blessings
be upon him)? If we are living in his way, no
problem will be too great to overcome, our
future will appear clear before us, and the

challenges of young adulthood will seem

small. If young Muslims join in the ranks
of the followers of Muhammad (peace and
blessings be upon him), they will be joining the ranks of the merciful, pious, and
just people through all the ages, from the
beginning of time. Indeed, Allah opens the
way for those who sincerely obey Him and
His Messenger.
Your Friends
Good people should surround themselves
with good friends. The Prophet (peace and
blessings be upon him) was surrounded
by people who sought the pleasure of Allah. Ask yourself: Who do you mix with and
why? Your friends reflect who you are.
At the end of his life, when Muhammad
(peace and blessings be upon him) was
laid to rest in the earth, his funeral was
attended by his heartbroken friends and
Companions. They had been with him for
so long, many since the time of the first
revelation of the Qur'an some 23 years before, and now they were to be left alone,
without a guide for the first time in so many
years.
Imagine yourself living at the time of the
Prophet (peace and blessings be upon
him); imagine walking in his blessed footsteps. If you follow his Sunnah, you are
walking in his footsteps today.
His body was not laid to rest in some
grand tomb as one might expect for so important and so influential a man. Rather it
was placed in the earth beneath the spot
where he used to sleep on a simple mat. It
fell upon Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with
him), his friend from before the time of the
first revelation, to deliver the funeral sermon. Abu Bakar had to try to make sense
out of this tragedy for the crowds assembled before him. At this key moment in the
development of Islam, they eagerly awaited what Abu Bakar, the closest friend of
the Prophet, would have to say. His words
to them were filled with wisdom. "O men,"
he said, "if anyone worships Muhammad,
let him know that Muhammad is dead. But
if anyone worships Allah, then know that
Allah is alive and will never die."

Aleppo: Lets we forget

Many of us love a good horror film. We like

getting really afraid. Our hearts jump out
of our chests and we squirm in our seats.
We enjoy it because it is not real. We can
escape at any time. At any point, we can
say enough is enough. But imagine for a
moment that your life was a real time horror movie. That you were not watching a
character on screen but playing the actual
part of a human being caught up in the
most horrific circumstances.
Every day, the women and children of
Aleppo - including newborn babies still in
incubators experience a
reality of sheer terror. In the films, characters can share their apprehension and terror with each other, but in real life the children in Aleppo are horrified on their own,
People are dying in Aleppo and no one
seems to care. I was reading the messages on Facebook and Twitter and could
not face the suffering of the people. How is
it possible that 50,000 children have been
killed in Syria? Is this what they mean by
evacuation? As a lover of history, seeing
Aleppo - one of the most historically relevant cities of this century - destroyed and
forgotten is saddening. History will judge
us for our indifference, Half of those left in
Aleppo are children. They are bearing the
brunt of the world's political games. The

ing unnecessary fights with other men;
swearing, and regarding women with disdain and contempt.
Men who have such a mindset consider the
act of showing patient gentleness towards
their wives before and during sexual intimacy, as an antithesis to being manly, assertive, powerful and in control.
The Prophet however, made it very clear
to Muslim men that they should not climb
on top of their wives like animals, without
arousing them first with foreplay, using loving words and kisses.
Conclusion: A loving family man
While many fathers and husbands might
be loving and tender behind closed doors,
they hesitate to display care for their wives
and daughters in public, especially in front
of other men. Not so was the Prophet!
The Prophet openly showed love for his
daughters. He would kiss and secretly converse with Fatimah in front of others. Contrast that to the negative reaction some
modern-day Muslim men show to the good
news of a daughters birth a reaction
similar to the one showed by pagan Arabs
during the era of ignorance.
Chivalry, honesty, integrity, fairness, justice, gentleness, compassion, and empathy: the Prophet embodied all these positive qualities in his cordial and successful
relationships with the women in his life;
qualities that we all should try to acquire
and incorporate into our own lives.

Page 10

A father tries to find his way through the

rubble in the devastated city
logic of war sometimes paints situations
with broad strokes.

To paint an entire population as terrorists

allows for mass violence, and allows onlookers to ignore the innocent. Aleppo is
happening because the world turned blind.
Killing families in their homes on the premise that they are militants is a mere prelude
to genocide. Genocide against innocent
men, women and children is an ominous
sign that might is right and democracy can
go hang. Children born post March 2011 in
Syria do not know what life is like without
war. This is their world. Yes, their world!
And yet we all sit back and do nothing.
How have we looked on as shell-shocked
children are exhumed from rubble and left
writhing in bloody clothes on dirty hospital
gurneys? How have we watched as children resort to reciting the Quran as their
only form of anaesthesia during surgery?
Maybe we dont want to deal with it. Maybe
we just dont care.
In a world where information can fit in the
palm of your hand, in this world of social
media everything that has been happening in Aleppo has been happening in front

of our eyes. But who is marching on the

streets of Paris, London or Nairobi or waving banners in solidarity? Who is wiping the
bloody tears from children who have survived the type of trauma that most adults
would struggle to overcome? Children who
respond with the strength many of us can
only aspire to possess?
When I see the citizens of the world under the banner of the United Nations crying
hypocritical tears when they see a video of
a man carrying his son drenched in blood,
I am ashamed. Disgusted by world leaders
who preach freedom and democracy but
then stay silent while genocide happens.
Young children like 7-year-old Bana Alabed and her mother Fatimah, who tweeted about the horrors of living through the
Syrian government's assault on eastern
Aleppo are the true heroes of the war. They
are warriors on a battlefield where there is
nothing sweet or fitting in death. As Ernest
Hemingway once said, Syrias is a war
where, You will die for no good reason.
We all know what comes next. Human indifference to mass murder in real time is
sickening. But someday sooner or later,
war and death will knock on your doors too.
Lest we forget, Rwanda, Somalia, Darfur,
Armenia, Bosnia! To paraphrase Hemingway, when the smoke clears and the dust
settles, we must never forget that the free
world watched as Aleppo burned. Never
think that war, no matter how necessary or
how justified, is not a crime. It is time we
learned compassion and empathy.
What happened in Aleppo will stain our
conscience for years to come despite the
fact that in all likelihood, it will go unpunished. Let us use what we have witnessed
in Aleppo to make sure that the same never
happens in Kenya.

Infuse spirituality in children, Madrasa teachers told

Madrasa teachers have been called
upon to infuse spirituality and maintain
culture of memorizing Quran in children
to enhance on Madrasah education.
At the same time, the teachers were
advised to take keen interest in Arabic
language and prevail on their students
to learn and train in the language and
other Islamic disciplines to promote
the language so as to get better understanding of their religion and teachings
in the Noble Quran.
The calls were made by the Da'wah
Officer at Jamia Nairobi Sheikh Muhammad Sheikh Isaack who said infusing spiritual values in the daily lives of
Muslim children at an early stage is of
utmost importance and will help in creating spiritual awareness and inculcate
good Islamic moral values for better
growth of the young generation.
Addressing Muslim faithful at Darul Hijra mosque Mowlem in Dandora area
last Sunday, Muhammad advised Madrasah teachers to be role models to
their students, stick to Islamic teachings
and values, impart the correct teaching
and knowledge to children for proper
guidance and spiritual nourishment to
strengthen the children spirituality and
true faith.
He pointed out that since Arabic is the
language of the Quran, it is prudent for
Madrasa teachers to train Muslim children in the language to improve on their
skills for better understanding of their
religion.
In his naseeha ( advice), Muhammad
further told Madrasa teachers to ensure
that students apart from memorization
should also be imparted with knowledge on the meaning of the Quran and
hadith so as to get a deep understanding of the sacred scriptures.
He stated that the Noble Quran and

hadith are the main sources of Shariah in

Islam and emphasized on the importance of
teaching the memorization of the Quran and
traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace
be upon him to young Muslims for them to
be acquainted with his life and teachings.
''Madrasa teachers should live up to their responsibilities and put much emphasis in the
teaching of Arabic language and hadith so
as to provide adequate Islamic knowledge
for Muslim children,'' said the Da'wah Officer.
On his part Sheikh Sadik Khamis director
of Darul Hijra Mosque commended Madrasa teachers for their efforts that have
contributed to the educational and spiritual
development of Muslims in Dandora and its
environs.
He called on Muslim parents to take madrassa education seriously and be at the fore
front to support the education needs of their
children for prosperity.

Assisting the physically challenged

Social welfare is an instinctively
noble human characteristic that is
intrinsically valuable to our society
and to all of humanity. It defines who
we are as a people; compassionate,
caring, unselfish and willing to reach
out to others in their times of need.
Always with the perceptive gratitude
of the concept of: "For the sake of
Allah swt let me be there ". A very
basic concept of what one would like
to believe is actually a part of Islamic
teachings (or Humanity) at its best.
In the spirit of empowering our disabled brothers and sisters to be mobile, Ummah Foundation has since
the beginning of its inception disbursed wheelchairs and other paraplegics to the physically changed.
Ummah Foundation is one such a
humanitarian Organization that believes disability is not inability. We
believe that with assistance to the
disabled, we can go a long way in
empowering them to be productive
members of the community. For
many years, hundreds of the physically challenged people have benefitted from wheel-chairs, crutches,
blind canes and tri-cycles donated
by Ummah Foundation. It has also
helped to a large extend these categories of people living with various
forms of disabilities to start a new life
by providing some seed resources to
get them started in entrepreneurship
activities.
This has gone a long way in helping
the brothers and sisters get on with
their daily activities without depending entirely on their family members
and others. The recipients have
indeed proved the saying that disability is not inability by engaging in
meaningful activities.
This week Ummah Foundation donated a specially designed wheel
chair to our young brother Abdul. Abdul was born a very jolly and strong
boy and when he was 4 years old
and even running around Kibera
estate where they reside with his
mother, he fell sick and after a very
long ailment and several visits to different doctors, he could not lift his
lower limps. He became paralyzed
and from then he has never known
what walking or even playing around
with other children of his age means.
He has depended entirely on his
mother who carries him to school
and back. It has been a very hard
task for the young mother who has
not only taken care of him but has
to wake up and look for their daily
bread. Thanks to Ummah Foundation he has this special wheelchair
that has made his life more flexible.

We need to re-assure the wealthy that these 'disadvantaged' people are no threat to their net
profits or wealth. A donation of a wheelchair, a paraplegic and crutches to Ummah Foundation
will alleviate a lot of pain and sufferings our brothers and sisters go through. It is therefore our
appeal to all well wishers and donors that you give your contributions so that we can help the
society at large. We cant afford to see the disadvantaged community always going around
begging and we shut our eyes to it and assume all is well. We should empower them to be
meaningful in the community.
