WHAT IS THE 2017 MANITOBA LAND USE PLANNING GATHERING, CONFERENCE AND

Manitoba Indigenous and Municipal Relations (IMR), Manitoba Sustainable Development (SD) and Indigenous
and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), along with Island Lake Tribal Council (ILTC), are hosting the first

The purpose of this Gathering is to build capacity, relationships and networks within and among land and
resource management boards, governments and business.
Themes presented throughout the Gathering include: developing, implementing and maintaining land use plans;
best practice and jurisdictional models; and finally, economic development.
By coming together collectively to network and share knowledge, land and resource managements boards will
be better equipped to begin, continue, complete and maintain their respective land use plans unique to their
communities in the best way including full community engagement/consultation; best practices of technical
techniques (including traditional lands keeping); and methods of reduced environmental impacts.
We hope you will join us for this exciting gathering, conference and trade show!

WHAT IS THE COST TO ATTEND?

There is NO REGISTRATION FEE to attend the Manitoba Land Use Planning Gathering. The Gathering will
cover the costs of travel, meals and hotel accommodations for a maximum of two (2) board members to attend.
If additional members of your board or community wish to attend the Gathering, the costs for travel, meals and

HOW TO DESIGN EXCELLENT USE-AND-OCCUPANCY
RESEARCH (UOR)
Most applied cultural research done in Canada produces information that
cannot withstand reasonable scientific scrutiny without having its credibility
seriously damaged. There are two main reasons for this. First, insufficient
attention is given to the design of research instruments like questionnaires,
data-collection manuals and base maps. Second, inadequate training and
supervision is given to the interviewers who must administer the research
instruments. This workshop will focus on the first of the problems. The
facilitator will guide participants through the process, steps and decisions that
must be considered when constructing any piece of excellent research.
BREAKOUT # 7 GORDON BLUESKY, Lands and Resources Manager, Brokenhead Ojibway
Nation (BON), & ARIEL LUPU, Principal Environmental Planner,

PROCESSES FOR SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY AND LAND USE

Successful planning is only possible if its a Community-led approach with
outcomes based on clear vision, goals and objectives. In this interactive
breakout session, participants will learn how Brokenhead Ojibway Nation
developed their own unique plan as a guide for development and sustainable
growth.
