Spray For Life and its Patented Technology
Q1: What is Spray For Life?
A: Spray For Life is the most technologically advanced dietary supplements globally available on the
market today.
"nature's nanotechnology." Biotech uses the molecular structures, devices, and systems found in
plants and animals to create new molecular products. Nanotech is more general, not being limited
to existing natural structures, devices, and systems, and instead designing and building new, nonbiological ones. These can be quite different: harder, stronger, tougher, and able to survive a dry or
hot environment, unlike biology. For example, nanotech products can be used to build an
automobile or spacecraft.

made available to be dispensed through an intraoral spray which increases absorption and
bioavailability.
through fixed-geometry micro channels within its unique interaction chamber. As a result, the
product stream accelerates to high velocities (faster than the speed of sound to 1500 ft/sec for 3-5
nanoseconds); creating shear rates within the product stream that are orders of magnitude greater
than any other conventional means. Our products experience identical processing conditions,
producing the desired results, including: uniform particle and Nanosyze reduction. This is
achieved without excessive heat or breaking any chemical bonds (i.e. mimic shear from chewing).
Spray For Life researchers have tested and screened over a thousand raw ingredients while
observing very large differences in particle size and solubility. We then have developed a
proprietary testing methodology to identify raw ingredients that have the smallest particle size
combined with natural methods to balance the hydrophobicity (HLB/LogP) and ionic state (pKa,
zeta potential) in a water based delivery vehicle.
We have identified numerous food approved, GRAS, and natural ingredients to restore the solubility
and bioavailability of most dietary supplements. Our technology delivers completely natural, NOT
synthetic, molecules to your system in a form that most closely mimics the hydrated structure
found in nature. The NanoSyzed process then keeps these ingredients in a stable form while
remaining in solution, and without reaggregation or precipitation.
Q10: What makes Spray For Life better than other dietary supplements in pill, tablet gelcapsule or liquid form?
A: Spray For Life can be taken at any time at any place without the need for water or food. Spray For
Life addresses the difficulty 4 out of every 10 consumers (40% of the Adult U.S. population)
experience while swallowing pills, tablets and gelcaps as well as inefficient assimilation and
absorption. And with Spray For Life you will not experience any stomach upset.
Q11: We have taken liquid vitamins and sprays before, but how do you make Spray For
Life taste so incredibly good?
A: What you are experiencing with the flavor of Spray For Life is over 15 years of flavoring expertise
combined with a team of other specialists that have over 50 years. All the flavors used in Spray For
Life are natural and contain no fruit juice.
Q12: When are the best times to take Spray For Life?
A: The simple answer is "any time." Our products are so convenient there is no need for water, and
small enough to be carried with you or one at the office for super convenience. Since the products
are in a nano-liquid state, digestion has little or no affect in there absorption capabilities. There is

2) Xylitol is a 100% natural product, a sweetener that occurs naturally. It can be found in berries,
fruit, vegetables, mushrooms and hardwood trees. It also occurs naturally in our bodies in fact, an
average size adult manufactures up to 15 grams of xylitol daily during normal metabolism.
Xylitol is a naturally occurring carbohydrate, that looks and tastes just like regular table sugar. It is
a natural sweetener that can be extracted from any woody fibrous plant material.
Safe For Diabetics -Unlike sugar, xylitol is not easily converted to fat.
Helps Prevent Cavities-Since it is a non-fermentable sugar, it cannot be converted to acid
by oral bacteria. Thus, the alkaline-acid balance in the mouth is maintained, which helps in
preventing cavities.
Helps Prevent Ear Infections-Xylitol can also be used as medicine in prohibiting certain
bacterial growth to help prevent ear infections in young children. It will also help clear out
earwax and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the pharyngotympanic tubes,
connecting the nose and ear.
Slows the Growth of Candida-Xylitol helps prevent bad breath, ulcers, and stomach cancer
by slowing down the growth of Candida Albicans (a serious yeast infection), and other
harmful bacteria like H. pylori.
May Improve Bone Density-According to research from the University of Oulu in Finland,
xylitol was shown to help improve bone density in rats. This indicates it has potential as a
treatment for osteoporosis in humans.
For more information on which Xylitol Spray For Life utilizes, please refer to the following link

3) Vegetable Glycerine is 100% pure, safe and low glycemic index sweetener. It contains no
carbohydrates or cholesterol. Derived from coconut or palm oil, this product is excellent for use in
raw foods as well as in baked and cooked foods.
Glycerine is not chemically related to sugar and seems to have no affect on insulin and blood sugar
levels making it a safe alternative for diabetics and people with candida yeast overgrowth. It also
does not feed the bacteria that form plaques and cause dental cavities.
A little goes a long way - only one tablespoon of vegetable glycerine is equivalent to about 1/4 cup
of sugar. Vegetable Glycerine is pure Kosher grade and is suitable for vegans and vegetarian.
4) Oh! So Sweet Reb-A/Citrus Extract Blend 150 is a natural sweetener and flavor enhancer
approximately 150 times sweeter than sugar which is Kosher Certified. It contributes zero calories
& zero carbohydrates to finished products. It is derived from Stevia (Reb-A) and Citrus Aurantium
(bitter orange peel), liquid in form. The citrus extract has been blended with Reb-A (97%) to
increase the sweetness intensity and improve the flavor of our Spray For Life product. OH! So
Sweet meets all regulatory requirements in the U.S.A, European Union and Canada.
Q18: How much does each Spray For Life pump hold?
A: Each pump holds .88 fl oz. (26 ml), which is a 30 day (1 month) supply when used as directed,
which is 3 sprays twice per day or 180 metered sprays. The only exceptions occur when taking

Adding this ingredient to meals is considered to be effective in making meals more filling. In some
villages in Malaysia, garcinia is used to make a soup that is eaten before meals for weight loss
because of garcinias appetite-blocking abilities.
This plant offers one of the least expensive herbal supplements on the market. The ingredient from
the rind of the fruit could hasten your weight-loss efforts. The natural extract is called hydroxycitric
acid (HCA), and researchers claim that HCA can double or triple ones weight loss.
With proper weight-loss efforts (dieting and exercising), the average person taking HCA lost an
average of four pounds a month.
Garcinia may also be great for emotional eaters. Those who participated in the study showed an
increase in their serotonin levels; hence, it may also improve mood and sleeping patterns.
How Does Garcina Cambogia Work?
The HCA extract from garcinia cambogia supplement aids in weight loss by doing two things: It
helps to block fat, and it suppresses your appetite.
HCA blocks fat by inhibiting a key enzyme that your body needs to make fat from carbohydrates:
Citrate lyase. Usually carbohydrates or sugars that are not used immediately or stored in other
forms are converted into fats. When HCA inhibits citrate lyase, the fat-making process is halted and
the production of LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides decrease.
HCA also suppresses appetite by increasing serotonin levels. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in
your brain that makes you feel good. Its a target of many antidepressant medications. Having low
levels of serotonin may make you feel depressed or anxious; it drives many people into emotional
or reactive eating. By increasing serotonin levels, HCA improves mood and suppresses the drive to
react to stressful situations with food. As you eat less, your body senses this and it releases stored
fat in your fat cells.
Spray For Lifes Sweet & Slim has been testing this amazing ingredient, garcinia cambogia (Super
Citrimax) since 1997 with tremendous results. Spray For Life has been purchasing and following
the clinical results from InterHealth since that time. InterHealth is the company that supplied Dr. Oz
with the clinical trial to validate his assessment of this wonder fruit. In the last 16 years, Spray For
Life has been able to reduce the dosing and add ingredients that work synergistically in the success
of garcinia without compromising the results. This fast action spray works quickly to satisfy your
hunger needs and as a result, is a great replacement snack as it tastes just like candy.

What is Choline?
Choline is a B vitamin-like molecule that is naturally produced by the human body. The body uses
choline to produce certain brain chemicals, to mobilize fat, for normal transmission of nerve
impulses, and is used for a range of body functions. A diet rich in lecithin food sources enables the
body to break this down into choline, or choline can be taken in supplement form. Studies show
that it may be an excellent memory tonic having positive effects on our thought processes and
mental well-being, as well as muscle control.
Nutritional Role of Choline
Choline is used by the brain to make acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in memory
function. It helps build cell membranes and move fats and nutrients between cells. Choline aids in
reproduction, fetal and infant development, a healthy liver, gallbladder, and heart. Choline
increases good cholesterol and reduces bad cholesterol.

Uses
Some studies suggest that coenzyme Q10 supplements, either by themselves or in with other drug
therapies, may help prevent or treat the following conditions:
After Heart Attack
One clinical study found that people who took daily CoQ10 supplements within 3 days of a heart
attack were less likely to have subsequent heart attacks and chest pain. They were also less likely to
die of heart disease than those who did not take the supplements. Anyone who has had a heart
attack should talk with their health care provider before taking any herbs or supplements,
including CoQ10.
Heart failure (HF)
Theres evidence that CoQ10 may help treat heart failure when combined with conventional
medications. People who have congestive heart failure, where the heart isnt able to pump blood as
well as it should may also have low levels of CoQ10. Heart failure can cause blood to pool in parts of
the body, such as the lungs and legs. It can also cause shortness of breath. Several clinical studies
suggests that CoQ10 supplements help reduce swelling in the legs; reduce fluid in the lungs, making
breathing easier; and increase exercise capacity in people with heart failure. But not all studies are
positive -- some find no effect -- so using CoQ10 for heart failure remains controversial. CoQ10
should never be used by itself to treat heart failure, and you should ask your health care provider
before taking it for this condition.
High blood pressure
Several clinical studies involving small numbers of people suggest that CoQ10 may lower blood
pressure. However, it may take 4 - 12 weeks to see any change. In one analysis, after reviewing 12
clinical studies, researchers concluded that CoQ10 has the potential to lower systolic blood
pressure by up to 17 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 10 mm Hg, without significant side
effects. More research with greater numbers of people is needed. Dont try to treat high blood
pressure by yourself -- see your health care provider for treatment.
High cholesterol
People with high cholesterol tend to have lower levels of CoQ10, so CoQ10 has been proposed as a
treatment for high cholesterol, but so far theres no evidence whether it works or not. There is some
evidence it may reduce side effects from conventional treatment with cholesterol-lowering drugs
called statins, which reduce natural levels of CoQ10 in the body. Taking CoQ10 supplements can
bring levels back to normal. Plus, studies show that CoQ10 may decrease the muscle pain associated
with statin treatment. Ask your health care provider if you are interested in taking CoQ10 with
statins.
Diabetes
CoQ10 supplements may improve heart health and blood sugar and help manage high blood
pressure in people with diabetes. Two studies found that 100 mg of CoQ10 twice daily improved
A1c levels, a measure of long-term blood sugar control. But another study found no effect. If you
have diabetes, talk to your doctor or registered dietitian before using CoQ10.
Heart damage caused by chemotherapy
Several clinical studies suggest that CoQ10 may help prevent heart damage caused by certain
chemotherapy drugs, adriamycin, or other athracycline medications. More studies are needed,
however. Talk to your health care provider before taking any herbs or supplements if you are
undergoing chemotherapy.

Heart surgery
Clinical research indicates that introducing CoQ10 prior to heart surgery, including bypass surgery
and heart transplantation, can reduce damage caused by free radicals, strengthen heart function,
and lower the incidence of irregular heart beat (arrhythmias) during the recovery phase. You
shouldnt take any supplements before surgery unless your health care provider approves.
Gum (Periodontal) disease
Gum disease is a common problem that causes swelling, bleeding, pain, and redness of the gums.
Clinical studies show that people with gum disease tend to have low levels of CoQ10 in their gums.
A few studies with small numbers of people found that CoQ10 supplements led to faster healing and
tissue repair, but the studies were not well designed. More research is needed.
Other
Preliminary clinical studies also suggest that CoQ10 may:
Scientific studies are needed to see whether CoQ10 can be safely and effectively used for these
health problems and needs.
Dietary Sources
Primary dietary sources of CoQ10 include oily fish (such as salmon and tuna), organ meats (such as
liver), and whole grains. Most people get enough CoQ10 through a balanced diet, but supplements
may help people with particular health conditions (see "Uses" section) or those taking certain
medications (see "Interactions" section).

What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is different from other essential vitamins because our own bodies can manufacture it
with sunlight exposure. The main function of vitamin D is to regulate the absorption of calcium and
phosphorus in our bones and aid in cell to cell communication throughout the body.
Frequent exposure of the skin to sunlight promotes sufficient vitamin D synthesis without the need
for supplements, however, adults who have darker skin pigmentation or frequently wear sun
protection during outdoor activities are often vitamin D deficient.
Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common in northern latitudes and is considered an epidemic in
the United States, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.1

Maintaining cognitive functions - vitamin D may play a key role in helping the brain keep
working well in later life, according to a study of 3000 European men between the ages of
40 and 79.
Healthy body weight - vitamin D probably plays an important role in maintaining a healthy
body weight, according to research carried out at the Medical College of Georgia, USA.
Asthma symptoms and frequency - it can reduce the severity and frequency of asthma
symptoms, and also the likelihood of hospitalizations due to asthma, researchers from
Harvard Medical School found after monitoring 616 children in Costa Rica.
Rheumatoid arthritis - it has been shown to reduce the risk of developing rheumatoid
arthritis in women.
Protects from radiation damage - a form of vitamin D could be one of our body's main
protections against damage from low levels of radiation, say radiological experts from the
New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Vitamin D and cancer risk - various studies have shown that people with adequate levels of
vitamin D have a significantly lower risk of developing cancer, compared to those whose
levels are low. Vitamin D deficiency was found to be prevalent in cancer patients regardless
of nutritional status in a study carried out by the Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
T.B. recovery - high vitamin D doses can help people recover from tuberculosis more
rapidly, researchers reported in September 2012 in the Proceeding of the National Academy
of Sciences (PNAS).
Heart attack risk - an study published in September 2012 suggested that low levels of
vitamin D may increase the risk of heart attack and early death.
Vitamin D deficiency
According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition10, "sensible sun
exposure (usually 5-10 minutes of exposure of the arms and legs or the hands, arms, and face, 2 or 3
times per week) and increased dietary and supplemental vitamin D intakes are reasonable
approaches to guarantee vitamin D sufficiency."
Alarming rates of Vitamin D deficiency in USA - data collected from the National Health and
Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), USA found that 9% (7.6 million) of children across the
USA were vitamin D deficient (defined as less than 15 ng/mL of blood), while another 61 percent,
or 50.8 million, were vitamin D insufficient (15 to 29 ng/mL).
Lead author of the study, Juhi Kumar, M.D., M.P.H, a fellow in pediatrics at Children's Hospital at
Montefiore Medical Center, The University Hospital and Academic Medical Center for Albert
Einstein College of Medicine, said: "We expected the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency would be
high, but the magnitude of the problem nationwide was shocking."

Obesity can cause Vitamin D deficiency. Researchers from the D-CarDia collaboration associated a
high BMI with low Vitamin D levels, their findings were published in PLoS Medicine.
Vitamin D deficiency speeds up aging of bones. American and German scientists found that the

What is Vitamin E?
Vitamin E is a powerful, fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes against damage
caused by free radicals and prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Free radicals are compounds
formed when our bodies convert the food we eat into energy. People are also exposed to free
radicals in the environment from cigarette smoke, air pollution, and ultraviolet light from the sun.
The body also needs vitamin E to boost its immune system so that it can fight off invading bacteria
and viruses. It helps to widen blood vessels and keep blood from clotting within them. In addition,
cells use vitamin E to interact with each other and to carry out many important functions.
Vitamin E exists in eight different forms (isomers): alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol; and
alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocotrienol. Alpha-tocopherol is the most active form in humans.
Dosing and daily allowance recommendations for vitamin E are often provided in alpha-tocopherol
equivalents (ATEs) to account for the different biological activities of the various forms of vitamin
E, or in international units (IU), which food and supplement labels may use. The conversion factor is
1mg of an ATE=1.5 IU.
Vitamin E supplements are available in natural or synthetic forms. The natural forms are usually
labeled with the letter "d" (for example, d-gamma-tocopherol), whereas synthetic forms are labeled
"dl" (for example, dl-alpha-tocopherol).
Why is vitamin E needed?
Vitamin E is needed for structural and functional maintenance of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth
muscle. It also assists in the formation of red blood cells and helps to maintain stores of vitamins A
and K, iron, and selenium. It may have a positive effect on immune health, protect against the
oxidative damage that can lead to heart disease, have preventive effects against cancer, help relieve
symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, and may help prevent some diabetes-related damage,
particularly to the eyes.
Vitamin E has been proposed for the prevention or treatment of numerous health conditions, often
based on its antioxidant properties. However, aside from the treatment of vitamin E deficiency,
there is a lack of clearly proven medicinal uses of vitamin E supplementation beyond the
recommended daily allowance. There is ongoing research on its use in numerous diseases,
particularly in cancer and heart disease.
What are the signs of a deficiency?
Vitamin E deficiency is very rare in healthy people. It is almost always linked to certain diseases
where fat is not properly digested or absorbed. Examples include Crohn's disease, cystic fibrosis,
and certain rare genetic diseases such as abetalipoproteinemia and ataxia with vitamin E deficiency
(AVED). Vitamin E needs some fat for the digestive system to absorb it.
Vitamin E deficiency can cause nerve and muscle damage that results in loss of feeling in the arms
and legs, loss of body movement control, muscle weakness, and vision problems. Another sign of
deficiency is a weakened immune system.

What is Vitamin K?
Vitamin K refers to two naturally occurring fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin K1 and vitamin K2.
Vitamin K1 is also known as phylloquinone or phytomenadione (phytonadione), while vitamin K2
includes menaquinone and menatetrenone.
Vitamin K1 is made by plants and Vitamin K2 is typically produced in the large intestine by bacteria.
Vitamins K3, K4 and K5 also exist - they are synthetic forms and are used to inhibit fungal growth as
well as by the pet food industry.
Vitamin K may very well be the next vitamin D as research continues to illuminate a growing
number of benefits to your health.
It is probably where vitamin D was ten years ago with respect to its appreciation as a vital nutrient
that has far more benefits than was originally recognized.
And, according to Dr. Cees Vermeer, one of the worlds top researchers in the field of vitamin K,
nearly everyone is deficient in vitamin K just like most are deficient in D.
Vitamin K measurements in blood plasma can be done accurately, but the results are not
necessarily helpful because they mainly reflect what you ate yesterday. Because of this, we will
have to trust Dr. Vermeer on his assessment that most are too deficient to reap all of its health
benefits. Vitamin K researchers across the world will acknowledge him as a leader in this field.
Most people get enough K from their diets to maintain adequate blood clotting, but NOT enough to
offer protection against the following health problemsand the list is growing:
Vitamin K comes in two forms, and it is important to understand the differences between them
before devising your nutritional plan of attack.

What is Melatonin?
Melatonin is a natural hormone made by your body's pineal (pih-knee-uhl) gland. This is a peasized gland located just above the middle of the brain. During the day the pineal is inactive. When
the sun goes down and darkness occurs, the pineal is "turned on" by a special center called the
supra-chiasmatic nucleus (SCN).
A key factor in how humans sleep is regulated by exposure to light or to darkness. Exposure to light
stimulates a nerve pathway from the retina in the eye to an area in the brain called the hypothalamus. The SCN initiates signals to other parts of the brain that control hormones, body temperature
and other functions that play a role in making us feel sleepy or wide awake. SCN begins to actively
produce melatonin, which is released into the blood. Usually, this occurs around 9 pm. As a result,
melatonin levels in the blood rise sharply and you begin to feel less alert. Sleep becomes more
inviting. Melatonin levels in the blood stay elevated for about 12 hours - all through the night before the light of a new day when they fall back to low daytime levels by about 9 am. Daytime
levels of melatonin are barely detectable.
Besides adjusting the timing of the clock, bright light has another effect. It directly inhibits the
release of melatonin. That is why melatonin is sometimes called the "Dracula of hormones" - it only
comes out in the dark. Even if the pineal gland is switched "on" by the clock, it will not produce
melatonin unless the person is in a dimly lit environment. In addition to sunlight, artificial indoor
lighting can be bright enough to prevent the release of melatonin.
The amount of melatonin released at night varies among individuals, but it is somewhat related to
age. Children on average secrete more melatonin than adults, which decreases further with age.
However, research has shown that older people with sleep problems do not always have lower
melatonin levels than people who experience normal sleep.

What is Selenium?
Selenium is an essential mineral and micronutrient. It is fundamental to human health and found
in many foods. It is found in meat, seafood (hence, selenium levels are high in populations with
high intake of seafood, like the Inuit population),[1] grain cereals, egg yolk, milk, brazil nuts,
mushrooms and garlic.[2] Concern has been raised for some years about falling levels of selenium
intake and a possible relationship to the incidence of some diseases, including some cancers. [3]
Selenoproteins are important constituents of a number of enzymes with a range of functions
including antioxidant function, thyroid hormone metabolism, male fertility and immune
mechanisms. A decline in blood selenium levels in countries has raised concern about possible
public health implications, particularly in relation to cancer and cardiovascular disease.[3] [4]
How much selenium is recommended?
Dietary recommendations for selenium differ between countries. This is because there is
uncertainty over what constitutes 'optimal selenium status'.[5] The average daily intake of selenium
in the UK has been falling over a 30-year period.[5]
The recommended daily allowance (RDA) in the US RDA is 55 micrograms/day for adults. The
World Health Organization (WHO) RDA for selenium is 70 micrograms/day to 350
micrograms/day. Some are recommending supranutritional supplements of 200 micrograms/day
to 800 micrograms/day. Toxic effects probably occur at around 40 x the RDA.
How are selenium levels measured?
Erythrocyte, serum and tissue levels of glutathione peroxidase (GP) can be measured to assess
selenium status. Selenium in hair and nails can also be measured. Discuss with your laboratory
before deciding which method to use.
Why is selenium essential?
Dietary recommendations were made over 15 years ago on the basis of blood levels of glutathione
peroxidase (GP). This intracellular enzyme converts hydroxyl radicals or hydrogen peroxide into
water and this requires selenium as a cofactor. Levels of this enzyme have thus been taken to
correlate with selenium levels. Since then, over 30 new selenoproteins have been identified and
about half of these have an identified biological function.[2] These selenoproteins include:
Four GP enzymes, a major class of functionally important selenoproteins and the first to be
characterized:
Classical GP x 1.
Gastrointestinal GP x 2.
Plasma GP x 3.
Phospholipid hydroperoxide GP x 4.
Thioredoxin reductase (TR), a selenocysteine-containing enzyme important in regulating
metabolic activity.
Selenoprotein P (60% of plasma selenium is held in this form) may have a role in the
transport of selenium but also may have other functions.
Several iodothyronine deiodinase enzymes. These are responsible for conversion of the
prohormone thyroxine to the active thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine, or T3).
Sperm capsule selenoprotein which may be responsible for maintaining integrity of the
sperm flagella (and hence motility of sperm).
Selenoprotein W. This is involved in muscle metabolism.

health (for a healthy immune system, for a protective effect against some forms of cancer, to
maintain and enhance male fertility, for a reduction in cardiovascular mortality and to regulate
inflammatory markers in asthma). Research is in progress and there is a lot of interest in the results
of this research. Although there are still many unanswered questions, so far selenium has been
linked with:
Keshan disease and Kashin-Beck disease (also often referred to as Keshan-Beck disease).
These are both associated with selenium deficiency.[6][7][8]
Counteracting the development of virulence and inhibiting HIV progression to AIDS.[9] Trials
are small and results mixed but more research is called for.[10][11]
Enhancing sperm motility. Selenium-deficient rats have immotile deformed sperm and
infertility. Although there is a rationale for this[12] one RCT was not able to show such an
effect.[13]
A possible role in preventing pre-eclampsia, although the Cochrane review suggests more
trials are necessary.
A possible relationship between mood disturbance and selenium deficiency.
A possible association between elevated selenium intake and reduced cancer risk. The
association between selenium status and cancer risk remains enigmatic and
epidemiological studies have failed to consistently link low selenium levels with increased
cancer risk in men and women.[14] It is possible that there may be gender differences in
susceptibility to cancer risk with men being more susceptible to the risk of low selenium. [14]
In the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer Trial, daily supplementation of selenium
significantly reduced prostate cancer in men.[15][16] It is thought that the greatest benefit
from selenium supplementation will be in low selenium status populations, although the
biggest primary and secondary prevention trials - SELECT (=Selenium and Vitamin E C
ancer Prevention Trials) - are underway in the USA (where selenium status is good).[17]
Some were predicting that the SELECT trial results in 2013 would show benefit. [18]
However, this trial was recently discontinued because there was no evidence of a benefit
from either vitamin E or selenium on prevention of prostate cancer.[19] Concern was also
raised about a link between selenium supplementation and an increased risk of developing
7type 2 diabetes.[20]
In asthma, some epidemiological studies suggest that deficiencies of selenium, zinc and
other nutrients (vitamins A, C, D, and E) may be associated with the development of allergic
disorders and asthma.[21] Although a number of trials suggest supplementation with
selenium may help symptoms of chronic asthma, only one small trial, according to the
Cochrane review, showed evidence of this.
Cardiovascular disease. Deficiency is associated with cardiomyopathy.[22] The hypotheses
that low selenium concentrations are associated with increased cardiovascular disease and
that selenium supplements prevent coronary heart disease are unproven. Selenium
supplementation cannot currently be recommended for cardiovascular disease
prevention.[23]
Deficiency in trauma and burns patients. One study reports improved recovery with
selenium supplementation in trauma and burns patients.[24]
The thyroid gland is rich in selenium. Selenium deficiency may help to precipitate
hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroid disease and supplementation may contribute to
prevention of these diseases.[25]

Areas with a low selenium soil environment are associated with deficiency. Such
areas include parts of China, Croatia,[28] New Zealand,[29][30] the Slovak Republic.[31]
The elderly in such areas are particularly at risk and one study from New Zealand
recently demonstrated suboptimal levels of selenium in a significant proportion of
103 elderly New Zealand women.[ 29]
The levels of selenium are higher in the south of England than in the north.[ 26] The
selenium status may vary within countries according to factors such as the selenium
in the local soil but is also affected by the levels of selenium in imported crops.
Patients on total parenteral nutrition (TPN).[32][33][34]

What is Zinc?
Zinc: Essential for Human Health
Zinc is an essential trace element for humans, animals and plants. It is vital for many biological
functions and plays a crucial role in more than 300 enzymes in the human body. The adult body
contains about 2-3 grams of zinc. Zinc is found in all parts of the body: it is in organs, tissues, bones,
fluids and cells. Muscles and bones contain most of the bodys zinc (90%). Particularly high
concentrations of zinc are in the prostate gland and semen.
Zinc - vital for growth and cell division
Zinc is especially important during pregnancy, for the growing fetus whose cells are rapidly
dividing. Zinc also helps to avoid congenital abnormalities and pre-term delivery. Zinc is vital in
activating growth - height, weight and bone development - in infants, children and teenagers.
Zincvital for fertility
Zinc plays a vital role in fertility. In males, zinc protects the prostate gland from infection
(prostates) and ultimately from enlargement (prostatic hypertrophy). Zinc helps maintain

testosterone.
In females, zinc can help treat menstrual problems and alleviate symptoms associated with
premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
Zincvital for the immune system
Among all the vitamins and minerals, zinc shows the strongest effect on our all-important immune
system. Zinc plays a unique role in the T-cells. Low zinc levels lead to reduced and weakened T-cells
which are not able to recognize and fight off certain infections. An increase of the zinc level has
proven effective in fighting pneumonia and diarrhea and other infections. Zinc can also reduce the
duration and severity of a common cold.
Zinc vital for taste, smell and appetite
Zinc activates areas of the brain that receive and process information from taste and smell sensors.
Levels of zinc in plasma and zincs effect on other nutrients, like copper and manganese, influence
appetite and taste preference. Zinc is also used in the treatment of anorexia.
Zincvital for skin, hair and nails
Zinc accelerates the renewal of the skin cells. Zinc creams are used for babies to soothe diaper rash
and to heal cuts and wounds. Zinc has also proven effective in treating acne, a problem that affects
especially adolescents, and zinc has been reported to have a positive effect on psoriasis and
neurodermitis.
Zinc is also used as an anti-inflammatory agent and can help sooth the skin tissue,
particularly in cases of poison ivy, sunburn, blisters and certain gum diseases.
Zinc is important for healthy hair. Insufficient zinc levels may result in loss of hair, hair that looks
thin and dull and that goes grey early. There are also a number of shampoos which contain zinc to
help prevent dandruff.
Zinc vital for vision
High concentrations of zinc are found in the retina. With age the retinal zinc declines which seems
to play a role in the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which leads to partial
or complete loss of vision. Zinc may also protect from night blindness and prevent the development
of cataracts.
Who needs zinc?
Everyone needs zinc. Children need zinc to grow, adults need zinc for health. Growing infants,
children and adolescents, pregnant women and lactating mothers, athletes, vegetarians and the
elderly often require more zinc.
Where do we get zinc from?
We get zinc primarily from our food. The major sources of zinc are (red) meat, poultry, fish and

seafood, whole cereals and dairy products. Zinc is most available to the body from meat. The
bioavailability of plant-based foods is generally lower due to dietary fibre and phytic acid which
inhibit the absorption of zinc.
A balanced diet is the best way to provide your body with zinc. A zinc supplement or a daily multivitamin/multi-mineral supplement may be taken if your nutritional intake is insufficient.*
What if we dont get enough zinc?
Zinc deficiency is a serious problem in many developing countries. Zinc deficiency is ranked as the
5th leading risk factor in causing disease, especially diarrhea and pneumonia in children, which can
lead to high mortality rates in these underdeveloped regions. Other severe deficiency symptoms
include stunted growth and impaired development of infants, children and adolescents. Early zinc
deficiency also leads to impaired cognitive function, behavioral problems, memory impairment and
problems with spatial learning and neuronal atrophy. Public health programs involving zinc
supplementation and food fortification could help overcome these problems.
