comfort and cruising, the BMW
X5 xDrive40e is an electric hybrid
sport-utility vehicle that in all manners
is a market match. The first of its kind
from BMW, the X5 is not a blocky chore
to handle. And with an EPA-rated milesto-the-gallon that can reach 86, the xDrive40e significantly reduces trips to the gas
station. However, its no slouch when it
comes to power, with a rated top speed of
130 mph that is electronically controlled.

which has already won the coveted title
of International Engine of the Year three
times. Its unique design rolls with a TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Injection, and VALVETRONIC variable valve
timing and variable camshaft control on
both the intake and exhaust sides. Its the
most powerful, four-cylinder gas unit in
the BMW Groups engine line and is renowned for its easy power delivery, freerevving performance and highly refined
character while generating a maximum
output of 245 horsepower and 350 Nm of
peak torque.
The electric eDrive motor, powered by
lithium-ion, has 113 horsepower, while its

maximum torque of 250 Nm is available instantly in typical electric drive mode. This
boosts the engines output for increased
responsiveness with no delay when taking off from a stop while also delivering
powerful performance whenever a quick
burst of speed is necessary. In gas mode,
the BMW X5 xDrive40e completes the 0 to
60 mph in about 6.5 seconds; while in allelectric drive mode, the vehicle is capable
of a top, electronically-controlled speed of
75 mph to create maximum efficiency and
performance. Used in conjunction with the
8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission,
the engine revs up to 308 horsepower with
332 pound-feet of instant torque.

Factors that mar an automotive paint job

washing off harmful substances promptly reduces damage

ost people purchase a car

for its looks and performance. However, unless the
auto is kept in a garage and never driven,
it is impossible to keep it in pristine condition. In many cases, damage to the clear
coat or enamel paint on the car is something vehicle owners expect.
A car owner who decides he or she wants
the car to remain in the best shape possible
will have to take an active role in mainte-

nance and damage prevention. One of the

key things to remember is to never allow
any substance to remain on the paint for too
long; otherwise the risk for damage increases. Also, it may be very difficult to clean if
the offender is allowed to sit on the paint.
Here are some other factors to consider.

uv light
Just as UV light can affect skin, hair
and other parts of the body, it also can af-

fect the paint on a car. UV rays oxidize the

paint and cause a white, powdery film to
form on the car. Washing the car frequently
enough and applying the best quality wax
will help keep UV rays from penetrating
through the paint.

BMW: xdrive system offers traction driving options

little (if any) emissions

The battery pack is fully
charged through standard electricity power packs in about 3
hours and 50 minutes, a BMW
iWallbox or through public generating stations. The high-voltage
battery, which handles the 12-volt
electrical system throughout the
car through a voltage transformer,
is tucked away and well protected
beneath the luggage compartment
floor without sacrificing space.
A particularly enticing feature
is that short, daily commutes will
create zero exhaust emissions
while actual gas use is lowered
dramatically for rides of up to 15
miles in city traffic. Short, everyday journeys in urban areas can
easily be completed with zero
tailpipe emissions. Driving in this
way equates to an equivalent 94.2
mpg, setting a new benchmark for
efficiency. During trips when both
engine and motor must be used,
the powertrain keeps the gas use
and emissions figures less than in
comparable models with comparable power ratings.
When the battery is fully
charged, daily journeys of up
to 37 miles realize gas use of no
more than 43.5 mpg, depending
on driving style. Whats more,
when the fuel tank is filled to its
22-gallon capacity and the highvoltage battery pack is charged,
the xDrive40e also boasts the X5s
customary long-distance capabilities for gas use, topping 25.7 mpg.

top-notch agility,
handling
All that power is barely felt
through the body as the xDrive40e gobbles up the road
through its available Dynamic
Performance Control, which easily distributes power between
the rear wheels for top agility and sporty handling. When
cornering, the outside wheel
receives more torque, creating
the ability to drive into curves.
This gripping traction is provided by the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system,
with BMWs EfficientDynamics
eDrive technology.
The two drive units are kept in
harmony through the Steptronic
transmission and permanent allwheel-drive system, while shift
paddles on the steering wheel are
an option and help drivers make
swift, manual gear selections.
The xDrive creates the traction
that makes driving in any weather or road surface conditions a
breeze with excellent stability. An
electronically controlled, multi-

plate clutch is the foundation for

fully variable distribution of the
drive torque between the front
and rear wheels. As it is linked to
the Dynamic Stability Control, the
xDrive system can act in advance
to counter vehicle under-steer or
over-steer, and to split the distribution of torque for the best handling balance. Switching between
the various modes is as easy as
pushing the eDrive button on the
center console, allowing drivers to
tailor the powertrain as situations
preferences dictate.

variety of driving modes

At start up, default AUTO
eDrive setting is activated, with
both engine and electric motor
working efficiently in unison. The
electric motor alone is used for
starting out under normal power
requirements and the gas engine
cuts in at around 44 mph or when
accelerating rapidly. In this mode,
the intelligent operating strategy determines the most efficient
drive combination at all times and
switches to it automatically.

the xDrive creates the

traction that makes driving in
any weather or road surface
conditions a breeze with
excellent stability.

Safety / Visibility

The driver also can switch to

the all-electric drive mode, setting
MAX eDrive, so the xDrive40e is
running solely on the electric motor, which is designed for easy
driving with zero local emissions.
The third available mode is the
SAVE battery setting that allows
the driver to conserve or build up
the batterys reserves for later use.
The state of charge can be kept
constant or even boosted in order to use the batterys power for
all-electric driving in city settings
later in the trip. This allows the
stored electrical energy to be used
selectively when needed.
The xDrive40e also features
as standard the Driving Experience Control switch to set up
COMFORT, SPORT and ECO
PRO modes, each of which have
the effect of altering the throttle
mapping, the steering characteristics and the responses of
the transmission.
Further, the Dynamic Damper
Control is included as standard
on the xDrive40e and ECO PRO
mode furthermore triggers efficiency-optimised control of electrically powered comfort functions, such as the air conditioning,
seat heating and heated mirrors.
Whats more, the coasting function shuts off the engine, allowing
the vehicle to glide along without burning any fuel. The modes
freely interact with one another
through the use of the eDrive button and the Driving Experience
Control switch.

Windshield Health
improve visibility , safety
with clear views

he health of your vehicles windshield is crucial to safe driving.

A damaged or dirty windshield can
greatly inhibit your ability to visualize and
react to road conditions. Clean windows can
also make a vehicles overall appearance
shine. The best way to find out which cleaning agent works the best for you is to try several until youre satisfied with the results.

simple steps to ensure

clear vision
There are many windshield-enhancing
options on the market today. Its in your best
interest to take advantage of this product diversity. Some of the most popular additives

are water-repelling agents that can enhance

your vision on rainy days. If youre skeptical about these additives, invest in a good set
of wiper blades. Your local auto parts dealer
can get you the right wipers for your vehicle.
One small ding on a windshield can
turn into a big problem if it is not corrected as soon as possible. Consider additives
that promise to protect against windshield
dings that may be caused by loose rocks on
the highway. If youre planning on giving
your entire vehicle a good cleaning, you
should always wash your windows last.
Otherwise, soap residue is likely to end up
on your windows after washing your vehicles body, leaving unsightly marks that

can impact your sight lines while driving.

choosing the right materials

The trick to finding the right glass-cleaning material that works the best for you is
to experiment. Look for bottles that boast
streak free. If you have tinted windows,
opt for ammonia-free cleaners. Over time,
ammonia can cause the tint film to change
colors and become weak. Use microfiber
towels to wipe down your glass. Set aside a
few towels that you will use strictly for windows. Using these towels to dry off a dirty
car will leave the chemicals you used on
your vehicle on the glass, undoing your hard
work in the end.

way to recharge and get
some time away from the
daily grind. While many working
men and women take one or two
vacations per year, recreational vehicle owners can travel more often
without breaking the bank.
Recreational vehicles, or RVs,
are often referred to as campers
or motor homes. Equipped with
many amenities, ranging from
kitchens to multiple sleeping areas
to entertainment spaces, RVs offer
many of the comforts of home.
The Recreational Vehicle Industry
Association says RV ownership is currently at an all-time high. According
to Dr. Richard Curtin, RV industry
analyst and director of consumer surveys at the University of Michigan,
8.9 million households now own an
RV. Thats up from 7.9 million in 2005.
Drivers considering buying
an RV may have many questions
about these increasingly popular
vehicles. RVs come in two main
types: motorized and towable.

Understanding the differences

between the two and the various
subcategories of RV can help drivers make the most informed decisions when purchasing their RVs.

motorized
Motorized RVs are broken
down by class, including class A,
B and C. The distinction between
the classes of RV is based on size.

class a
This class of motor home is very
large and offers all of the comforts
youd expect from home. Many
people who purchase a class A RV
plan to travel all year long. Slideouts can expand the living area
when parked, and full bathrooms,
complete kitchens and more are
the norm. Because of their size,
class A RVs tend to be the most
expensive and may be more vehicle than many people can afford.
Their large size (many look like a
bus on the road) can make them
difficult to navigate for novices.

class b

travel trailers

Class B RVs are often referred to

as van conversions. Class B are
the smallest, fully enclosed campers available in the motorized category. Living space is limited in
these RVs, but economy and versatility make them quite popular.
Usually these campers can sleep
between two and four people.

Travel trailers look similar to traditional motorized RVs but without

the driving cab. They can be hitched
to the back of a vehicle. Travel trailers are popular because of their versatility. Travel trailers can be ideal for
those with limited budgets but the
desire to have a self-contained unit.

class c
Class C RVs are a compromise
between types A and B. Class C
are mid-sized with a drivers compartment similar to a van and a
larger box in the back for the living
area. Some come with a sleeping
bunk above the cab. Depending on
the floor plan, class C campers can
sleep up to 10 people.

towable
Towable RVs are another option and can be more affordable
because they can be pulled behind
your existing vehicle.

pop-up
Folding camping trailers, or popup trailers, are inexpensive and
lightweight. They provide many of
the conveniences found in a basic
travel trailer but in a smaller size.

fifth-wheel
If you own a pickup truck, a
fifth-wheel trailer may be good for
you. These hitch to the top of the
pickup bed and have similar features to a traditional travel trailer.
RVs make great investments for
men and women who love the open
road. They also are a great way to
take the entire family on an affordable and memorable vacation.

Cabin internet services add luxury to trips

advancements improve driving experience, safety

he luxuries of modern
technology have found
their way into the cabin of
our vehicles. And theyre here to
stay. Technological advances dont
just make for a more enjoyable
driving experience, but a safer one
as well. And with every new vehicle that hits the market, the features available for connectivity in
your car are rapidly evolving.
With these advancements, you
can now drive down the road while
streaming music and receiving incoming calls all without having
to take your hands off the steering
wheel. You can use internet-based

services in your car to search for the

best driving directions and spot upcoming traffic congestion.

hands-free messaging
One of the most exciting emerging features of connected cabins is
voice-activated messaging. You can
compose text messaging and emails
using in-vehicle technology, as well
as have your car broadcast messages
from your inbox. As with any new
technology feature that is integrated
into the driving experience, you are
cautioned to use common sense as to
not endanger you, your passengers or
fellow drivers. Keep your eyes on the

road and avoid using these systems in

heavy traffic, experts warn. Distraction is a leading cause of auto accidents, underscoring the importance of
remaining focused behind the wheel.

mobile applications
Another trend is the extensive use
of mobile applications, both in the car
and through your phone. Many cars
can run these apps through the cars
digital display, helping you stream
music, check weather and even
perform online searches. Some car
companies are developing their own
smartphone apps as well that let you
interact with your car through your

phone. They might remind you when

your car needs service, for example,
or help you report an accident.

weather & traffic

As wireless data becomes more
integrated into our vehicles, so does
the ability for your car to use that
data to make your life easier and
safer. Some new cars use real-time
traffic data in their navigation systems to help you find the fastest
route possible to your destination.
Others incorporate updated weather
information into their systems. Both
can help you avoid congestion and
unsafe travel hazards on your trip.

By Steven Overly

the washington post

alifornia-based lucid motors

officially unveiled its first highend electric vehicle this week, a sleek,
sunlit sedan called the Lucid Air that executives expect will roll off the assembly line
starting late 2018. But as advancements in
automotive innovation autonomous driving, electric vehicle batteries and ride-sharing, among others continue to progress at a
rapid pace, its unclear exactly how different
the car market will look when the Lucid Air
finally hits the road.
Were very forward looking in that
respect, said Peter Rawlinson, Lucids
chief technology officer. We believe
weve got the most likely bases all covered. Indeed, the alpha prototype car
that Lucid Motors put on display this
week promises to be fully electric and allow for completely autonomous driving.
The company claims the car will feature
a 100 kilowatt hour battery and eventually a 130 kilowatt hour battery that can
travel up to 400 miles on a single charge.
The top-tier Tesla Model S can get up to
330 miles, according to the company.

nesse, whether the car will ultimately deliver all of the promises executives touted
Wednesday remains to be seen. Weve been
creating a production car from the start, not
a concept car, said Derek Jenkins, the vice
president for design. Inevitably through the
feasibility process some features will morph
or change slightly. Fundamentally this is representative of the car we want to build.
Edmunds senior analyst Jessica
Caldwell isnt convinced that the car will
entice customers. As automakers continue
to make investments in fuel efficiency and
offer more electric vehicle options, there is
a push across the industry to make batteries smaller, more efficient and longer lasting. Powerful batteries are becoming the
cost of entry rather than distinguishing
characteristics, she said. It seems a little
passe at this point. To really move the needle, I think youre going to (have to) talk
about how your electrified vehicle will fit
into a future concept of mobility, whether
its part-time ownership or part of a ridesharing fleet, Caldwell said.

production car,
not concept car

Tesla Motors, the current leader in the

luxury electric market, is Lucids most natural competitor. Tesla announced earlier this
year that plans are in the works for its own

ride-sharing network. The company also

continues to push forward with autopilot
technology and is working toward full selfdriving capabilities in all of its vehicles. Tesla
already has thousands of cars on the road
and orders for many more, a distinct advantage that will leave Lucid playing catch-up.
Even if Lucids technology is ultimately
comparable or superior to Teslas, the latter company has another key differentiator:
Elon Musk, Teslas CEO, has given the company a mighty public persona relative to its
small size. A lot of people want to emulate
Tesla, but Tesla is more than a car company,
Caldwell said. They have someone at the
helm who is trying to put people on Mars,
who is doing a lot of interesting thoughtprovoking things, which kind of gets people

to buy in wanting to be part of that.

lucids opportunity
Thats not to say Lucid doesnt have a
fighting chance. On the contrary, its team
includes a roster of executives with auto
industry bona fides. Peter Rawlinson
was formerly the head of engineering for
Tesla. Derek Jenkins used to lead design
for Mazdas North American operations.
Brian Barron, the director of global manufacturing, spent 18 years at BMW. The
company has also raised more than $130
million in venture capital from a slate of
American, Chinese and Japanese investors, according to investment database
Crunchbase. A Lucid spokesman declined
to confirm that amount.

as automakers continue to make

investments in fuel efficiency and
offer more electric vehicle options,
there is a push across the industry
to make batteries smaller, more
efficient and longer lasting.

Lucid executives say comparisons

to Tesla sell their cars potential short.
From the beginning we werent looking at Lucid or the Air as going after
Tesla, Jenkins said. There is a huge
market out here that is not yet driving
electric vehicles. We see a tremendous
advantage with our technology and
the layout of our vehicles over internal combustion vehicles.
Lucid began accepting online preorders for the Lucid Air. The first 255
launch edition cars can be reserved
for a $25,000 down payment and will
carry a price tag north of $100,000.
A specific price has not been set,
Rawlinson said. The standard edition cars that follow can be held for
$2,500 and the company expects they
will ultimately cost roughly $65,000.

electric car potential

The Electric Drive Transportation Association counts 133,824 electric vehicles that were sold during
the first 11 months of 2016. Thats
slightly less than 3 percent of total
automobile sales over that same period. Analysts expect the market will
continue to grow, though estimates
vary as to how quickly. Attendees

at last months Los Angeles Auto

Show got a preview of the Air, albeit
cloaked in camouflage print. Company executives revealed then that
the car would have a smaller frame
than other luxury sedans, but still offer comparable passenger and cargo
space due to the design of the cars
under-the-hood components.
Lucid Motors started in 2007 as a
battery maker by the name of Atieva.
The company originally planned to
build batteries that could be used
in other electric vehicles, but shifted
gears in 2014 to instead start work on
a car of its own. As we expanded
our efforts to developing complete
powertrain systems, it became clear
that the most direct route to increasing the number of electric vehicles on
the road was to develop our own,
the company stated in October.
Lucid Motors revealed plans last
month to build a production facility
in Casa Grande, Arizona, an exurban
community situated between Phoenix and Tucson. The company plans
to break ground on the factory next
year and start assembling cars in
2018. It expects to hire 2,000 workers
there by 2022.

Many drivers are aware of the different grades of gasoline available at

the pump. Unleaded versions come in
regular, plus and premium varieties,
which coordinates to the octane of the
gasoline. The octane rating of gasoline
tells a driver how much the fuel can
be compressed before it spontaneously
ignites, rather than igniting normally
from a spark plug in the vehicle engine. Lower-octane gasoline can withstand less compression than higheroctane gasoline.
Gas that ignites on its own rather
than from a spark from the spark plug
causes knocking and pinging, which
can damage the engine. Therefore it
is important to use the right octane
level of gasoline for a vehicle, based
on the cars compression ratio for the
engine. Car engines that are rated in
a particular way will benefit from the
correct octane in gasoline. Higher-performance engines commonly found in
race cars and sporty, luxury vehicles
will generally require a premium,
high-octane gasoline to run at their
optimal performance. Most cars on the
market are built to take regular 87-octane gasoline.

significant factor over time

A visit to the gas station clearly indicates that higher-octane fuel costs more
per gallon than the lowest octane. Over
time, filling up with premium gas can
be a significant factor in how much it
costs to own a particular vehicle. If you
are looking to save money, it is important to consider just how much of your
budget will be devoted to fuel costs. A
vehicle that requires premium gasoline
instead of regular gasoline may end up
costing a few hundred dollars more per
year based on the size of the fuel tank.
It is important to note that using a
higher octane fuel in a vehicle that is
not rated for it will not increase performance it only will end up costing you
more. Thats because the octane rating
refers to how much energy it takes to
ignite the gasoline and at what point in
the compression cycle, not how much
power the gasoline will put out. Premium gas will not improve gas mileage
or give the vehicle more oomph if the
engine is not designed to accommodate
a higher-octane fuel. In fact, engines
that are not designed for high-octane
gas may actually lose power because it
burns so much slower and the ignition
timing is not tuned for it.
It is always wise to consult with the
owners manual to determine the type
of fuel that will offer the best performance in the car. Those shopping for
a new vehicle should pay attention
to octane ratings and not assume that
every car they test drive is best when
running on regular octane.

Tire Maintenance

tire safety &

emergencies
routinely check tires to reduce risk of flat tires , blowouts

ew drivers will be fortunate enough to go their entire driving lives without encountering at least one flat tire. Flat
tires range from the inconvenient
flats, which may interrupt a road
trip or make drivers late for work or
an appointment, to more dangerous
blowouts, which can compromise
the safety of drivers, their passengers and anyone else on the road
when the tire gives out.
But as inconvenient or dangerous as flats or blowouts can be,
they also can be prevented more
often than not. Tires often produce
warning signs that a flat or blowout is about to emerge, so drivers
who want to avoid such unfortunate developments can inspect
their tires for the following signs.

varying wear
Tires should exhibit the same

type of wear. The wear on front

tires and back tires may differ,
but one front tire should have
the same amount of wear as the
other and the same goes for the
back tires. Uneven tread on tires
indicates that the tire with more
wear could be about to go out.

worn tread
Even drivers who know little
about cars can typically recognize when tire tread has worn
down to the point where the
tire is a safety risk. But drivers
who are unsure can employ the
quarter test. Insert a quarter into
the tread of the tire, with George
Washingtons head upright. If
you can see the hairline of the
United States first president,
then you need to replace the tire.
Perform this test on each of your
vehicles four tires.

low pressure
Drivers who do not routinely
check their tire pressure are more
likely to endure a flat or blowout
than those who regularly make
sure their tires are at the manufacturers recommended pressure, which can be found in a
vehicle owners manual or by
calling the tire manufacturer or
visiting their website. An underinflated tire is under stress that
can cause the tire to blowout. In
addition, poorly inflated tires
force engines to work harder,
which negatively affects a cars
fuel efficiency.

vibration

vibrating, drivers should immediately take the car to their mechanic for an inspection.

physical damage
to the tire
Sometimes tires exhibit physical damage like bulges or cuts,
and such signs could mean a flat
tire or blowout is just around the
corner. Tires that exhibit such
physical damage need to be replaced immediately. Flat tires and
blowouts can prove both scary
and inconvenient. Drivers who
want to avoid such problems
should routinely inspect their
tires for indicators that a flat or
blowout is likely to occur.

A car that vibrates excessively

may do so because tires are damaged. Poor suspension is another
cause of excessive vibration.

on the roadways are
unpredictable and can
be caused by just about anything.
Impaired or distracted motorists might heighten the risk of an
accident, but even things like a
squirrel running across the street
and scaring a driver can lead to
an accident. Tire blowout is another potential cause of accidents,
and such blowouts might be more
common than motorists expect.
For instance, a 2005 study from
the French National Institute for
Transport and Safety Research
found that, between 1996 and
2002, nearly 61,000 vehicles were
involved in crashes with property damage and/or injury on

a particular stretch of highway.

More than six percent of those
accidents involved tire blowout,
a problem many motorists might
mistake as something that only
happens in movies. Tire blowout
can put motorists in a precarious
position, especially if they dont
know what to do should one of
their tires blow out. Surviving
tire blowout can be done by adhering to the following tips.

dont hit the brakes

It might be counterintuitive
to squeeze the gas pedal when a
tire blows out, but doing so puts
drivers in control of the vehicle
and keeps it going in the intended direction. Immediately slam-

ming on the brakes will cause the

vehicle to turn, possibly turning
the vehicle into oncoming traffic,
a guardrail or other cars traveling in the same direction. When
squeezing the gas pedal, drive
straight down the lane. Within
seconds of pressing the gas pedal,
slowly begin to release it.

coast to a slower speed

As the accelerator is released,
allow the vehicle to coast to a
slow speed, but not a speed so
slow as to put driver and passengers at risk. Once the car is
coasting between 25 to 30 miles
per hour, use the turn signal and
slowly turn toward the side of
the road where the tire is blown.

For example, if the front right

tire is blown, turn toward the
right shoulder. You want to turn
toward this side because its always safest to limit your own
exposure to oncoming motorists
when changing the tire.

check tire pressure

When you have safely made
it to the shoulder and the tire has
been changed successfully, find
a filling station or other parking
lot and check the tire pressure on
the tires that did not blowout. A
blowout is often the result of an
underinflated tire, so if one tire
blows out due to underinflation its quite possible the others
might as well.

Maintenance / Interior & Exterior

Exterior Maintenance

Find the right detailer

paint: substances, light

can create damage

start the new year with a clean

car , inside and out

our car is exposed to many

different elements that can
leave your exterior and interior a
mess. It may be in your best interests to
hand over your keys to a professional
and let them make over your vehicle.
Whether you use your car or truck for
business or personal use, a clean environment is a huge help. If youre using
your vehicle for a delivery or rideshare
job, a clean car can ease the mind of
your customer. There are several options you should weigh while deciding
on a detail service.

calling in the pros

Hot summers can kick hazards of
the road, like asphalt, up on your trim
and creating unsightly black marks.
There are products to erase these
marks, but a professional detailer uses
commercial-grade chemicals for a better clean not to mention the amount
of elbow grease you can save.
Life is busy; sometimes you may
find yourself ignoring the cleanliness
of your vehicle to focus on more pressing issues. Your local professional
detailer can take some of the load off
your busy schedule and give your vehicle a fresh look. They will focus on
both the inside and out of your ride to

off the lot.

doused in paint spray, tar, concrete, and

other chemicals that are routinely
used in construction. Do not allow
these substances to harden on the
car. Rinse promptly with automotive
soap. Try to avoid construction zones
whenever possible.

choosing a detailer
A study by IBISWorld concluded
that the detail market is a $10 billiondollar industry. You have many options
to choose from regardless of where you
live. One of the best advertisements a
detail shop has is word of mouth.
Talk to your friends, check reviewbased websites and even stop in to
your local detail shops to choose the
right one for you. Also, be sure to shop
around for the best deal. Detail shops
have a lot of competition, so they typically offer attractive prices and may
offer specials from time to time.

rain
Both rainwater and other sources of
water can dissolve paint over time. The
U.S. Geological Survey has said that water is a universal solvent because it can
dissolve more substances than any other
liquid. Whenever the car becomes wet, it
should be dried with a towel or chamois
and not allowed to air dry.

detailer or dealer?

natural substances

Whether you choose your local detail shop or dealership for your professional overhaul is up to you. If your
vehicle is already scheduled for maintenance at your dealer, it may be convenient to have them detail it while its already there. Your independent detailer
may have gotten his experience working in the detail department at a dealer,
making them a bargain with dealer-level experience. Consider all options to fit
your budget and schedule.

Tree sap, bird droppings and splattered insects contain compounds that
can erode the paint on a car. Avoid parking under large trees where sap and bird
droppings may be prevalent. In terms of
bug splatter, try to wash it off as soon as
possible to alleviate damage.

eggs
Occasionally, rambunctious children think it is funny to egg a car.
However, the enzymes and sulfur
content in eggs can cause paint and
clear coat to dissolve, leaving white
spots in the wake of the egg. Because
egg can be sticky and very hard to
remove once dried, it is helpful to
wash it off as soon as possible. It
takes only a few hours for the damage to be permanent.

bleach
Although a bleach-and-water solution is often heralded for its ability to
clean many things, it should not be
used on a car. Bleach is an oxidizer and
it will pit metal and discolor paint. Be
careful with pool chemicals as well, as
chlorinator is usually regular household bleach. There are many things
that can damage a car paint job. Although its impossible to shield the car
from everything, there are precautions
that can be taken.

THREE YEARS IN A ROW!

(2014, 2015, 2016)

proactively protect the

interior of your car

damaged
interior
can
greatly reduce the value of
your vehicle, and your carpet
can take the brunt of the abuse. There
are several ways to protect it from lifes
inevitable messes. Muddy feet, young
children and spills are just a few hazards
that may damage your carpet. Vehicle
after-market retailers offer many kinds
of protection for your vehicles carpet.

floor mats
Many companies offer laser-cut
floor mats that are intended to fit your
specific vehicle. Using a universal floor
mat may provide some protection, but
a custom-fit mat will cover practically
every inch of your carpet, from door
to door and footwell to trunk. Look for
all-weather floor mats. Made of a durable material and designed with high
side walls, they will contain water,
mud and other hazards that are bound
to make it into your vehicle.

removing stains
The key to eradicating any stain is
to attack it as soon as possible. This
isnt always feasible if youre in a vehicle. Luckily, with a little elbow grease

and helpful products, you can usually

take care of it later.
Pick a carpet cleaner that you feel
confident will remove your stain. Then
find a good brush; one with soft-bristles will work best. Apply the solution
and allow it to soak into your carpet
for about 10 minutes before working
your brush in a circular motion. Allowing the cleaner to soak will help
break down the stain and make brushing it out much easier.

WE ONLY FIX EVERYTHING!

avoiding stains
While its not always possible to
avoid stains, there are several different ways to prevent them. If you have
small children, its a good idea to ban
eating or drinking on short rides. If
snacks and drinks are required for longer rides, buy spill-proof cups. These
containers are good at preventing
spills that may wind up in your carpet.
Be aware of the weather conditions. If youre expecting rain, plan to
park in areas that avoid having to get
your shoes wet or muddy. With some
ground rules and a little preparation,
you can ensure your carpet stays in
great shape.

Sunroofs

Drivers who like to allow a little light and fresh air

into their vehicles may be surprised to learn that
there are many different types of sunroofs.

Sunroofs improve vehicle utility, appearance

various options
available ,
dependent on
model

odays vehicles are equipped with

more amenities than ever before.
Drivers willing to spend a little extra can now cruise down the highways in
vehicles equipped with built-in WiFi and
cameras that allow drivers to see everything around their cars and trucks. While
new gadgets attract drivers attention, sunroofs which have been around since 1937
remain very popular as well. Drivers who
like to allow a little light and fresh air into
their vehicles may be surprised to learn that
there are many different types of sunroofs.
The following are a just a handful of sunroof
options drivers may want to consider when
buying their next vehicle.

top-mount
Drivers who want a top-mount sliding
sunroof may be able to find both manual
and electric sliding options. In a top-mount

sunroof, a large glass slides on tracks on top

of the roof, and many feature integral wind
deflectors that eliminate noise from the wind
no matter how fast the car is traveling.

panoramic roof systems

As their name implies, panoramic roof
systems provide a wider view than other
sunroofs. That view is available whether the
sunroof is open or closed, and panoramic systems are typically made of glass. Passengers
in both the front and rear seats can enjoy the
view through panoramic roof systems.

spoiler
Spoiler sunroofs are also known as tiltand-slide, and these sunroofs are a popular
built-in factory option. The view through a
spoiler sunroof is not as wide as that of a
panoramic system, but they tilt to vent and
slide open, so passenger headroom is not

typically affected by their presence.

inbuilt
Inbuilt sunroofs are common in luxury
vehicles. With an inbuilt sunroof, the panel
slides open between the metal roof and interior headliner. That creates a full opening,
but it takes away some headroom. Unlike
imported models that use painted steel,
American-made inbuilt sunroofs typically
use a glass slider, which provides a view
whether the sunroof is open or closed.

pop-up
Pop-up sunroofs are compatible with
many vehicles, and they are among the least
expensive options to install. Pop-up sunroofs are manually operated tilting panels
that typically are made of glass. Panels must
be stored when removed, but they also can
be tilted to provide a venting effect.
