STAND UP AND DELIVER

(Impromptu Speech Competition)

OBJECTIVES
This impromptu speech competition aims to:
1. Provide STI students with the opportunity to exhibit their communication skills
and discover their potentials on public speaking
2. Promote the importance of good speech and awareness on a wide range of
subjects among STI students
THE COMPETITION
The competition is designed to showcase the students ability to speak on a given
topic with spontaneity and sensibility given a limited time for preparation.
THE COMPETING INDIVIDUALS
Students from any year level and regular program recognized by STI Headquarters
and from any STI school may join the competition. Only one (1) entrant from each
school is allowed to join.
THE BOARD OF JUDGES
The Board of Judges shall be composed of three (3) members who are distinguished
individuals with good reputations as public speakers and/or orators.
MECHANICS
1. The contestants will be confined in a separate room where they will be
isolated until each contestant is called for the contest proper. Each
contestant will be asked to pick his or her number through draw lots done in
the presence of all coaches and participants, which will indicate their
competition sequence.

2. Ten (10) minutes prior to the contest proper, each member of the board of
judges will write down an official topic entry for the Impromptu Speech
contest. Only the members of the board of judges are allowed to contribute
topic entries.
3. The Chairman of the board will draw one topic from the official topic
entries. The topic will be the official theme for all contestants in the entire
competition.
4. A contestant will be called from the isolation room. The Master of Ceremony
will read the theme twice and the contestant is allowed to expound on it for
two minutes.
5. Each contestant will be given a maximum of 30 seconds to think. Timing
starts and the green light turns on when the 30-second thinking time
elapsed or as soon as the contestant utters his or her first word.
6. After one and a half minutes (1 ), the timer turns the green light off and
turns the yellow light on. It signifies that the contestant has thirty (30)
seconds more to finish his speech. After two (2) minutes have elapsed, the
timer turns the red light on to indicate that he may end his speech.
7. The contestant may choose to conclude his speech thirty (30) seconds
before or thirty (30) seconds beyond two (2) minutes.
8. The time limit will be strictly implemented. Should a contestant exceed
thirty seconds after the time limit, he will be automatically interrupted.
9. The winner shall be judged based on the following criteria for this
competition. The board of judges decision will be considered final and
irrevocable.
