Report on

“National WIE Summit 2010”

Theme: Edging the female talent

29th-30th May, 2010

First nationwide IEEE National WIE Summit 2010 took place on the 29th and 30th of May of this year, at
Government College University Faisalabad. The event drew over 150 participants from across Pakistan
who took part in it.

It was very first time in the history of Faisalabad that this type of Summit was organized in professional
comportment. This is indeed helpful to enhance the capabilities of future professional females and to
promote the culture of Engineering in Pakistan.

National Women-In-Engineering Summit 2010 (NWS) is gathering of IEEE WIE members including
student representatives from all the IEEE student branches and professionals of Pakistan. The slogan of
the Summit was “We Welcome”.

IEEE WIE student branch affinity group in GCUF was initiated on 15th April, 2008. In the first year of
initiation we organized IEEE WIE Pakistan Congress. In the course of two years we got huge success and
execute a lot of energetic activities and in 2009 we won “Best Affinity Group of the year award”
globally. This award is achieved first time among all the affinity groups in Pakistan.

The event included speeches of invited speakers, panel discussion, training sessions and fun filled
activities definitely. The primitive purpose of this Summit was to bring representatives of all IEEE
student branches, WIE Affinity Groups and all females from different universities of Pakistan and
inculcate the idea of community and sharing of knowledge of issues and their solutions pertaining to
women’s professional lives. In this Summit the representative of the universities which don’t have IEEE
student branches and willing to have it also participated in it. The University of Agriculture, Faisalabad
and University of Engineering and Technology, Faisalabad Campus was some of them.

Fine Art Exhibition:
Fine art students of GCU Faisalabad arranged exhibition of different miniatures and portraits
related to Women life and natural beauty. This increases the beauty of event and became
source of inspiration for delegates.

1st day:

With extreme energy and passion of students, the


event began.

Opening Ceremony:
The event began with an opening ceremony held in the
morning of 29th May, 2010. The event was started by
the opening message of Dr Irena Atov, Chair IEEE
Women in Engineering Committee and welcome
words of Dr. Shafay Shumail, Chairperson IEEE Lahore
Section read by Benazir. 11: Event Slogan on Board.

Speeches were also made by the honorable Chief Guest Dr. Salma Sultana, Assistant Professor, GC
University, Faisalabad. Dr. Shahid Nadeem, Chairman Bioinformatics Department, and Col. Afzal Sipra
Chairman Electrical Engineering Department. Col.Sipra expressed his views about IEEE GCUF as “IEEE
GCUF is the youngest, largest and hyperactive student branch of Lahore Section”. He congratulates the
students of GCUF for their determined efforts to organize these events. He formally welcomes the
participants and guests. Mr. Amir Zahoor, Section Student representative (SSR) of IEEE Lahore
Section, was also honorable guest at opening ceremony. Syed Muhammad Azzam, Chaiperson, IEEE-
GCUF also Welcome all on the behalf of organizing team.

After that chief guests open the proceeding of event by waving of National Flag with Pakistan’s National
Anthem.

Ice Breaking Activity:
Afterward proceedings of NWS 2010
started with an ice breaking activity.
There were about 150 representatives
from different universities of Pakistan.
In ice breaking activity participants
were required to tell their name with
one adjective starting with first letter
of their name.

After this activity there was an


integration game for participants
named “Dress up Mummy”.
Participants were divided into groups
of 16 members and required to dress
up one of their participants as
mummy with rolls of tissue papers. 14: Ice-breaking on proceeding
Best one and fastest one was winner. This
ice-breaking activity results with good integration of participants from all over Pakistan.

IEEE Women-In-Engineering (WIE) Resources:


One of the most informative sessions was “WIE Resources”
.It was presented by Adila Shauket and Qurat-ul-ain. They
delivered a presentation on “How WIE Benefits”. In this
presentation they presented the online resources available
for women and how they can avail them. It was one hour
session that includes description of benefits of IEEE, IEEE

awards, IEEE Medals, IEEE WIE Projects,


IEEE certification, available funding
resources and online recourses.
Bioinformatics Seminar:
Bioinformatics seminar was the parallel
activity of National WIE Summit 2010 Of 1
hour 30 mins. It was arrange especially for the
future bioinformaticians of GCUF.
The objective of this seminar includes
“Motivation of Youth as well as Introduction
of Bioinformatics Tools and Databases to
Young Bioinformaticians”. There were total
60 participants who attended this seminar.
Speakers at the seminar Mr. Hassan Tariq, Dr.
Tahseen Gulzar, Mr. Qamar Abbas, Miss
Bushra tahseen, Miss Maria Hasnee, Miss
Bushra Shaheen, Miss Sadaf Ambreen.

Mr. Hassan Tariq, told the participant about

1. The artificial intelligence


2. Application of artificial intelligence
3. Work on Bioinformatics i.e. user based and developer based
4. usage of biopearl in automated usage of data retrieval
Participant took keen interest in the new diminutions of bioinformatics. There was brief questions and
answer session at the end.

17: Question, Answer Session


Dr Tahseen Gulzar, Assistant Professor of the department of Bioinformatic, GCUF.

Points she delivered were:-

1. Her brief introduction


2. Basics of organic Chemistry
3. Drugs processing and application
4. Targeting effect of drug in human body
5. Resistance reaction of drug in different part of body. i.e. oral cavity
She concluded her speech by the brief detail of organic chemistry in bioinformatics.

Mr Qamar Abbas , expert in his field of Bioinformatics. He threw light on:

1. His field of research (i.e. phylogenetics analysis)


2. Importance of Bioinformatics in new era
3. Steps of phaylogenetic analysis Research fields of Bioinforamtics
4. He concluded his speech by giving inspiration to young Bioinformaticians about the latest
records of bioinformatics research.

Yes I’m:

A great motivational session


was conducted by Hiba
Hassan. She is an ACCA
qualified and a certified
trainer from SOL (School of
leadership). Theme of the
session was “Yes I am”. She
proved with examples that we
can do what we want. She
also emphasized on having
self confidence and to love
the job.

Draw Your World:

Subsequently there was an


activity to boost up the creativity of 18: Motivational Session "YES I am"
the participants and to show their
talent on paper. Competition was named as “Draw your world”. There were three participants in each
team and a task of drawing was assigned to each team. Task given to each team was to show their
creativity on paper about a given topic.

Syndicate Session:
After lunch break there was “Syndicate Session” of professional discussion. A number of
professional’s women from industry and educational institute participate and expressed their
views regarding challenges faced by women in their professional life. The discussion went great,
different views were shared by every speaker.

I can change the world:


There was a great leadership session named I can change the world by Mr. Waleed Anwar. He is also a
certified trainer from SOL (School of leadership).He advised the participants to believe in themselves
and to be initiators.

Sangamam Project launching:
A great initiative was taken by IEEE WIE GCUF to launch
the sangamam project in Pakistan. This was first initiated
in India by Madam Ramalatha Marimuthu, WIE
Coordinator R10.
Women are the backbone of any society. The abundance of
patience and wisdom in a woman makes her the ideal candidate
for her to lead a technical as well as Cultural Revolution on
earth. R10 WIE has launched the project “Sangamam” with
utmost confidence in the ability of women to bring about this
much needed revolution. “Sangamam” means bringing together
- the technical knowledge from the learned and the human and
natural resources of rural areas are brought

Ramalatha Marimuthu, a presentation
was delivered by Mehvish Zahoor (National
WIE Summit Lead) in which she talk about
initiatives taken in R10 and achievements of
R10. Future plans related to this project
were discussed.

WIE Buzz:
A recreational activity was also arranged for the delegates to relax them mentally. This session includes
Fun activities to involve the delegates and make better interaction and networking with them. All the
delegates participate and enjoy in all activities.

A city tour was arranged for the delegates and organizers. This was specifically arranged to spend some
precious and unforgettable moments with the delegates. We had a lot of fun there and enjoyed that
visit.
2nd Day:
The second day started with admiring message of Madam Mini Thomas, Vice-chairperson IEEE MGA.
Proceeding was started with full enthusiasm and zeal. Students were keen to get more and more from
the event. The day was divided into following sessions.

Debriefing of day 1:

The 2nd day started with the debriefing of day one. The session was
conducted by Mr.Amir Zahoor, SSR IEEE Lahore Section. A brief
look at the activities of the last day was taken, along with the
comments of students were taken about their experience about
program and what they learned from all activities.

Energizer:

To create a sense of love and affection for all the


fellow human beings, an energizer was organized by
Mr.Waleed. It was an activity full of fun, basically
holding the lesson to teach everyone that all human
beings are equal. The participants enjoyed this
activity to their extreme, this team activity was
arranged to involve the participants and motivate
them to work without feeling any type of hesitation.

WIE group presentations:

Different WIE groups from various universities were given a


chance in this portion to give their presentations on their
activities of WIE. All the office barriers of WIE presented their
introduction of group, their previous activities and future
plans. In the session almost six WIE affinity groups
participated. The session was very helpful for all the

delegates. It created awareness as well as an urge in all participants to perform more and more
activities.

MS office Workshop:

In the parallel activity there was a MS office workshop for the participants both IEEE and non IEEE from
G.C University and other local universities .The instructors for the workshop were Sir Touqeer Jilani
(Lecturer in GCUF), Sir Salman Mirza (IT Manager of GCUFs) and Engr. Yasir Munir. Total 100 students
participated in the workshop. In the Workshop the main emphasis was paid on MS-Office, MS-
PowerPoint, MS- Excel.

Online Talk with Owais Naveed:

Owais naveed is currently working as GOLD coordinator and WIE industry relationship Officer in IEEE
UAE Section, Region 8. He shares his experience that how WIE UAE section works and arranged different
activities. The session went great and the WIE group learned a lot.

Career counseling session:

A session that was of the most


interest for the female students
was the career counseling session.
The resource person for this
session was Ms. Javeria Zafar; she
is a HR manager in Serena Hotel (5
star hotel of Faisalabad). She gave
useful information to students who
want to continue their studies
after graduation and those who
want to apply for jobs, in session
the emphasis was also paid on the
professional skills that a person
must have to survive in industry. In
the end of the session there was a
question answering portion, in

queries regarding their career and
professional and student life.
Officers Training Session:

One of the main Sessions of the Wie summit 2010 was a WIE officer training. The resource person of
this session was Mr.Amir Zahoor (SSR Lahore Section).In that the participants were given a detailed
description on the formation of a affinity group and its working. It was told that how many persons can
be office barriers, what are their duties, the proper way to write a proposal, to initiate WIE groups and
to conduct many activities under WIE. In the end of the session there was a group activity for the
participants in which the participants were divided into 4 groups. Each Group was given a question
related to WIE and IEEE in which they have to brainstorm on all the possible answers. The session was
very informative.

Faisalabad declaration:

In the ending of the WIE summit 2010, a WIE forum was


formulate to initiate more and more WIE affinity groups in
various universities. And to hold more activities in different
branches.8 students from various universities were selected for
the forum.

Closing ceremony:

The fabulous event ended with a glorious closing ceremony. In the closing ceremony the certificates of
participation were given to all the participants. The shields of acknowledgement were given to worthy
guests and also the certificates were awarded to organizers of this mega event. Mr. Zeeshan Haider
shared the closing note with delegates and guests. Madiha Arshaf, Chairperson of WIE-GCUF and
Mehvish Zahoor, Event Lead delivered a closing note. They thanked to all delegates for their active
participation and shared their feelings.
