Serial Communication

This document aims at detailing the communication interface usable with the remote indication
system supplied together with SICES control panels.

The alarm status is caused by an event that requires the unit to stop.

The warning status is caused by an anomalous event that requires the operator to intervene but
which nevertheless allows the unit to continue operating.

The switchboard of the generator set is equipped with a remote indication system for the status and
occurrences of the generator itself.
The collected and transferred information are defined in paragraph 5. They are different for
different types of plants. The following types are defined:
A. DST4600 (by TELESEGNALI interface board)
B. DST4600A (by TELESEGNALI interface board)
C. DST4600A
The letters assigned to the previous plant types, will be used in the rest of the document for
signaling differences or restrictions about the communication protocol, applicable to the single
board type.
The information transfer is carried out through a serial communication link using a master-slave
protocol.

The physical layer for the data transfer is defined by the EIA RS-232 and EIA RS-485 specification.

The logic communication protocol used is the MODBUS/J-BUS in RTU-Mode.

Some of the implemented functions are not supported by the J-BUS, but it is nevertheless possible
to implement completely the interface on J-BUS.

The implemented baud rate is of 9600 baud.

1 start bit, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.
The parity depends on the status of the Dipswitch 4 of TELESEGNALI board:

Closed (ON)

an additional stop bit

The following 8 addresses are linked to the remote indication system and their selection is carried
out through the dipswitches 1, 2 and 3 located on the TELESEGNALI board.

The selected address is added to the standard address programmed in the EEPROM of
TELESEGNALI board. This addition isnt carried out for the address 1 marked with *.
The address 1 marked with * can be used to program the standard address by entering the desired
value in the corresponding register.

The baud rate can be selected by means of P62:

The communication format can be selected by means of P63:

1 start bit, 8 data bits, no parity, 2 stop bit

1 start bit, 8 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit

1 start bit, 8 data bits, even parity, 2 stop bit

1 start bit, 8 data bits, odd parity, 1 stop bit

1 start bit, 8 data bits, odd parity, 2 stop bit

The board address is selectable by means parameter P37; the selected value must be different from
0. DST4600A board manages more than one communication protocols: it is therefore necessary to
select the ModBus protocol by setting 1 or 11 into P51 parameter.

Serial Communication

Some registers have been reserved since they will be allocated to functions that will be
implemented in the future. Some other registers are managed only for compatibility with previous
implementations of this protocol, but they must not be used because future implementations of the
protocol may not manage them. Some registers are usable only for a board type, and some other
only for certain software revision of a board type.

Most of the registers keep unsigned information inside them. Someone, however, keep signed
information. This signed informations are expressed as twos complement format. For example,
the -1234 value is stored as FB2E hexadecimal. The informations that are greater than a
register size are divided into many registers. A description is provided in the detailed
documentation of these informations, on how they are divided.

These registers may be read but cannot be written. ModBus doesnt allow writing an input register.
Password is not required. In this table there isnt detailed information about the use restrictions of
the registers, but if a register has a restriction of any type it is marked with an # in the second
column.

Its possible to read and write this kind of register by ModBus protocol commands. Some of these
registers may be only read or only written as described in detailed register documentation. To gain
write access to the register, it is required a valid password (if it was set). See par. 10. In this table
there isnt detailed information about the use restrictions of the registers, but if a register has a
restriction of any type it is marked with an # in the second column.

Some registers are expressed as signed. For this registers, if the sign in negative their value are
expressed as twos complement standard format.
Example1: register 30023 (system power factor, hundredth)
0,95 95 hundredth 005F hexadecimal
-0,95 -95 hundredth FFA1 hexadecimal
Example2: registers 30017 and 30018 (system active power)
7500 kW 75000 tenth of kW 000124F8 hexadecimal
Register 30017: 0001 hexadecimal
Register 30018: 24F8 hexadecimal
-7500 kW -75000 tenth of kW FFFEDB08 hexadecimal
Register 30017: FFFE hexadecimal
Register 30018: DB08 hexadecimal

Some required data have the form of string. ModBus splits the string in adjacent registers. Each
register holds two characters. Registers with lower address hold the most left characters of the string.
Last characters must be a NULL (00H).
For example, the string IMPIANTO DI PROVA SICES is coded as:
40505: 4649H
(49H I
46H M)
40506: 4950H
(50H P
49H I)
40507: 4E41H
(41H A
4EH N)
40508: 4F54H
(54H T
4FH O)
40509: 4420H
(20H
44H D)
40510: 2049H
(49H I
20H )
40511: 5250H
(50H P
52H R)
40512: 564FH
(4FH O
56H V)
40513: 2041H
(41H A
20H )

Serial communication between the board and external equipment maybe protected by means a
password.
Password is stored into Holding Registers 41001 41004 as a continuous block of 4 16-bit registers.
These registers can be only written and it is not possible to read back the stored value.
To enable password setting (and other password protected features) it is first required to write the
actual password into registers 41005 41008; if this value match the password stored into registers
41001- 41004 it possible to gain access to the required functions.
Writing again the password into registers 41005 41008 lock access to the protected functions.
Write access to any register, except 41005 41008, requires a valid password, unless its value is
NULL.

The format is similar to the normal string format (see par. 8); the only difference is that the terminator
NULL character is not required is the string length is of 8 characters (if it is less of 8 characters the
NULL one is required).
For example: password ABCDEFGH is stored as:
41001: 4241H
(41H A
42H B)
41002: 4443H
(43H C
44H D)
41003: 4645H
(45H E
46H F)
41004: 4847H
(47H G
48H H)

The remote indication board recognizes the following standard MODBUS / J-BUS functions:
