SUZA inaugurates its CDL and TV

Honourable Riziki Pembe Juma, the Zanzibar Minister of Education and Vocational
Training officially inaugurated the Centre for Digital Learning (CDL) and SUZA
Television on Tuesday 27th December, 2016 at Tunguu Campus.

Honourable Minister commended SUZA for emerging with the thought of


introducing the idea of establishing this Centre and TV declaring that this will give
chance to our youngsters to make follow-up of their science studies especially in
the areas facing the scarcity of science teachers.
Honourable Riziki thanked the World Bank for sponsoring the construction of CDL
and SUZA TV which cost a total of US $ 925,000 in which 38% of it was spent for
building the capacity of SUZA scholars and 500 science and mathematics teachers
of Unguja and Pemba. 55% was used up in the construction of the centre and its
related equipment and infrastructure while 7% was spent for operation cost.

The Minister also hailed Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd for their promise to donate
US & 30,000 to support the operation of SUZA TV. She requested them to provide
their international expertise to SUZA in running information and communications
technology issues.
She advised SUZA to observe ethics and standards governing electronic media in
transmitting their contents. In addition, the Honourable Minister asked SUZA to
think of the idea of introducing the postgraduate studies through distant learning
stating that the CDL and SUZA TV will be important tools to facilitate the plan.
She finally urged academic community to get use of these facilities to the
maximum.
The CDL and SUZA TV will be providing our society, especially secondary school
students with wide-ranging educational proficiency in various disciplines starting
with science subjects and English language.
The Centre will also coordinate the integration of Open Educational Resources
(OERs) into local curriculum, coordinate the production and usage of massive open
online courses (MOOCs) as well as coordinating and manage online learning at the
State University of Zanzibar.
