Time To Buy Or Renew Voluntary

Hike Safe Cards_______________________

Hikers, climbers, back country skiers, kayakers and other outdoor

enthusiasts are encouraged to purchase their voluntary annual
Hike Safe Card for 2017. Card sales help ensure that N.H. Fish
and Game Law Enforcement Conservation Officers, trained in
wilderness rescue, are there to come to your aid if the unexpected
occurs in a remote location. The card also makes the holder
exempt from liability for repaying search and rescue costs, unless
due to negligence reckless or intentional behavior.

For an individual, 2017 Hike Safe Cards cost $25, or $35 for a
family, and are good for the calendar year ending December 31,
2017. The price is the same for in-state and non-residents. You
can purchase the card for someone else -- they make a great gift
for any backcountry adventurer on your list. Cards can be purchased online or by mail at www.wildnh.com/safe; they are also
sold at the N.H. Fish and Game Department in Concord.
The card has proved popular among outdoor enthusiasts. As of
December 1, 2016, a total of 4,175 cards had been sold this year,
bringing in nearly $120,000 for the Fish and Game Search and
Rescue Fund. Cards must be renewed annually.

People seem to appreciate having a way to contribute to our

Search and Rescue readiness, at the same time they get the peace
of mind that if an incident occurs, reimbursement costs are covered, said Col. Kevin Jordan. The Hike Safe Card is making a
difference for us.

Clocking Time

Its been a little while since Ive

written about the ticking of the
clock. Yes, our small, round,
wind-by-hand timepiece is stalwartly, metronomically marking the moments of our lives
morning, noon, and night. It
needs winding every couple
days - and when Ryan and I
neglect to do so preemptively,
our hearts seem to lurch when
its steady tick-tock abruptly
ceases. Our ears ring with it
sudden absence, recognizing
immediately what our minds

just the blankets of snow swallowing the tones of the world,
absorbing the music of the trees

ease the car onto the road.

Isnt it curious, how significant

a few minutes can seem in some
contexts, and yet how careless
any of us can be with time in
other instances? We like to fill
it up, know weve used every
minute, yet rather not be aware
of each moment passing. The
latter observation is also highlighted by the silence of winter.
As daylight shrinks and outdoor
work dwindles, I - and Ryan have made greater efforts this
winter to simplify our doings
and welcome space in our days
to hear the ticking of the
proverbially clock. One of the
commonly understood advantages of creating and living a
handmade life is the freedom it
offers to distance oneself from

the general rat-race. But

race-races and gerbil wheels
can come in endless forms, and
we are all our own best goad.
Working, creating, producing,
preparing, organizing, counting, on and on - we have hours
in the day, what must we do to
full these? Doing, in its myriad
forms, is easier to define, label,
judge, and honor than Being,
but if its all Doing, all the time,
how many ticks of the clock
slip by without a witness?
When one day were each out
of time, do we really wish to
have closed our ears and our
eyes as each tick passed us by?
It is a balance, surely, that each
of us can find.

The American Version Of Apple Cider______________________

By Heather Bryant,

My recent search for local apple

cider for a holiday party got me
to wondering where the drink
came from. Cider is known to
go as far back as the Romans
and Greeks, but it was alcoholic
or what we generally call hard
cider. Europeans also made,
and still make cider but again
its alcoholic. So where did our
unfermented version come
from?

Apples arent native to the

Inspiring Words for You!

Dear Friends, I think this song is apprpriate for

reflecting within at this time of year. And ask
ourselves, JUST WHAT HAVE WE DONE??? with
Christmas? So this is Christmas, and what have you
done? another year over, and a new one just begun. And
so this is Christmas, I hope you have fun, the near and
the dear one, the old and the young, A very merry
Christmas, and a happy New Year, lets hope its a good
one without any fear. And so this is Christmas, for weak
and for strong, for rich and the poor ones, the world is
so wrong. And so happy Christmas, for black and for
white, for yellow and red ones, lets stop all the fight. A
very merry Christmas, and a happy New Year, lets hope
its a good one, without any fear. And so this is
Christmas, And what have we done? another year over,
and a new one just begun. And so this is Christmas, I
hope you have fun, the near and the dear one, the old
and the young, A very Merry Christmas, and a happy
New Year, lets hope its a good one, without any fear.
My prayer is that we can start a fresh and make it a
choice to keep the spirit of Christmas around all year
long. Please take time to read the story in the Bible,

Yes, a straw-like aspirator is an
important tool for entomologists, who clearly arent worried about getting too close to
their work. He successfully
captured the ant and then took a
breath. His lungs burned. That
big ant had used the classic ant
defense of spraying formic

Carpenter Ants

Mention carpenter ants, and

Declan McCabe, chair of the
biology department at St.

about the time he got a lungful

insects. He saw a huge ant and

thing they arent, is consumers
of wood.

They do eat just about everything else, though, including

plant juices, other insects and
the honeydew that oozes out
of aphids, which are themselves
insects that suck up plant juices.
In turn, carpenter ants are eaten
by many creatures, including
bears and woodpeckers. They
are a preferred food of the
crow-sized, red-topped pileated
woodpecker.

Mention carpenter ants, and

But carpenter ants do plenty of

ecosystem remodeling on their
own. Although they dont eat
wood, they tunnel into its wet
and rotten places to build galleries to rear their young, leaving piles of sawdust behind.
These intricate tunnels can
cause dead trees to topple and
logs to fray. The ants perform a
valuable recycling service by
creating more surface area for
organisms that actually digest
wood, such as termites, fungi
and bacteria.

The trouble comes when they

build their nests in wood that is
important to people, for example, water-damaged beams or
flooring. I prefer that my home
not be recycled right now, said
Alan Eaton, a professor at the
UNH Cooperative Extension.
He said that three or four of the
carpenter ant species are the
most likely to nest in the wooden parts of your house.

According to the University of

Black carpenter ant colonies

one time.

And just like some humans

crowded into cities, black carpenter ant colonies like to raise
their kids in the suburbs, in
their case, satellite nests around
the main nest. In winter, Gotelli
said, they bulk up acquiring
up to 50 percent body fat and
seal themselves into the colony.
Their natural antifreeze protects
them down to temperatures of
approximately 15 to 5 degrees.
They are well adapted to New
England, Gotelli noted.

Wentworth D.O.T. Patrolman Retires After 30 Years Of Service

OHRV Safety Foundation Announces Snowmobile

Training Course___________________________________________
The recently formed OHRV
Safety
Foundation
has
announced that it will be offering snowmobile training courses for the 2016-17 winter. The
course is designed to provide
everyone from first-time, to
advanced riders more confidence and safety knowledge.
The course fills the need for
specialized instruction required
to safely operate a snowmobile
and navigate the trails.
Instruction is based at the Team
ONeil Rally School on their
600 acre facility located in New
Hampshires White Mountains.
The course includes a brief
classroom session, but focuses
primarily on actual operation
and riding instruction. Among
the skills covered are safe trail
riding and etiquette, maneuvering around and over obstacles
such as snowbanks and fallen
trees, proper acceleration/braking, body positioning/control
and suspension and chassis
adjustment.

Were excited to fill a significant gap in the New England

snowmobile community by
providing professional instruction in a relaxed environment to
meet the needs of each individual student. Early snowfall
across the region has set the
stage for an amazing winter on
the trails, stated OHRV Safety
Foundation President Chris
Cyr.
Cost for the course is $200/student, per day. The course does

not include use of a snowmobile. Participants must provide

their own machine, which will
enable them to improve their
skills and become fully comfortable on the actual machine
they will be riding. The courses
are scheduled on weekends but
can also be planned upon special request to accommodate
families and groups. Courses
are currently scheduled for
January 21-22, February 5,
February 11-12, and March 1112. Reservations are required,
and can be made by contacting
Team ONeil Rally School at

TeamOneil.com or calling 603444-4488. The course does not

serve as a NH Safety
Certification Class.

The OHRV Safety Foundation

is based out of the Team ONeil
Rally School and was created to
address the lack of hands on
training available for most Off
Highway
Recreational
Vehicles. Most of the initial
board was comprised of Team
ONeil Rally School employees
who used their expertise to create the course and curriculum.

CYAN MAGENTA YELLOW BLACK (Page 21)

Cary Wetherbee, Patrolman for the NH Department of Transportation Section 202, Wentworth, NH- signed off for the final time on the afternoon of Friday
December 23rd. After 30 years of service to the local area, Wetherbee has retired. A party for the departing patrolman was held on Tuesday, December 20, 2016
at the local State Shed, which was attended by nearly one hundred people. The room was full of distinguished guests, co-workers, past-co-workers, friends and
family. It was a very emotional gathering for Wetherbee who was thanked by all for his many years of service to the area. Pictures from left to right: Cutting his
retirement cake is Cary with his future Bride Janet, by his side; Dennis Ford presents Cary with a handmade red oak NH clock; State Senator Robert Giuda
presented Cary with a nice certificate from the State of NH Senate. There were several other presentations as well. We at the Northcountry News wish Cary
Wetherbee nothing but the best in all his future endeavours and thank him for his many years of service. The local people will certainly miss all the work Cary
has done for the area. He always went above and beyond the call of duty to make the roadways safe for the communities he served. - Bryan Flagg Photo

At the Wentworth Historical Society meeting, Dec. 15th, the

Boston Cane was presented to the oldest person in Wentworth,
Mrs. Elva Muzzey, 93 years old, who accepted the cane to a
round of applause. Despite the inclement weather of snow,
wind and freezing temperature, Elva was surrounded by over
20 members of her family and friends.
The tradition of the Boston Canes began in 1909 by Edwin
Grozier, Publisher of the Boston Post, who requested that an
ebony cane adorned with an engraved golden knob be presented to the oldest citizen of the town.

The canes were all made by J.F. Fradley and Co., from ebony
and were completed with 14-carat gold two inch long head decorated by hand. Each head was engraved with the inscription,
Presented by the Boston Post to the oldest citizen of (name of
town).
Originally intended for the oldest male in town, in 1930 Select
Boards began awarding this honor to women as well.
The custom of the Boston Post Cane took hold in those towns
that received them and continues to this day in towns that are
lucky enough to still have canes as many were lost or
destroyed. Wentworth Historical Society has an original cane
on exhibit in the Wentworth Museum.

Warren Village School Adventure Club Visits King Forest Industries

On Thursday, December 14, six students from the WVS Middle School Adventure Club visited
King Forest Industries in Wentworth, NH. KFI owner John King led the students on a tour of
the large facility and then met with the students for a question and answer session. The students loved touring the giant mill with Mr. King and were fascinated by the catwalks, the
impressive machinery, the planer mill, and the kilns. They learned several staggering facts
about KFI and its role in the lumber industry such as the fact that John King founded the mill
back in 1974. Also, it currently employs 85 people, produces enough board feet each day to
build 6 houses, and sells its lumber here in the US and around the world. With many of their
friends and family members working at the mill, it was a very memorable experience for the
youngsters. Thank-you Mr. King and KFI!
The Adventure Club is offered for 4th-8th graders as part of Warrens 21CCLC After School
Program. The clubs purpose is to help students learn more about careers, local businesses, our
community, and help students develop teamwork and leadership skills.
If you are interested in learning more about Warrens After School Program, please contact the

FACT:

Campton, NH December 13,

2016 Millions of visitors come
to the White Mountain National
Forest every year to enjoy the
breathtaking scenery, clear
mountain lakes and streams,
wildlife, and outdoor recreation
opportunities. The draw for
many visitors are the easily
accessible day use sites and scenic areas with picnic tables and
restrooms. Recreation fees are
used to complete projects that
otherwise wouldnt be funded,
including maintenance and
improvement of these sites.
Visitors who purchase a pass
are investing in the public land
they come here to enjoy.

This past summer the Forest

asked for public comments on a
proposal to change recreation
fees including increasing the
cost of a daily recreation pass
from $3 to $5, an annual pass
from $25 to $30, and eliminating the weekly and household
passes. The household pass
enables people in the same
household to purchase passes
for two vehicles at a reduced
fee. After a review of the com-

ments received, it became clear

that the household recreation
pass - is an important option for
many families to be able to
recreate on the national forest.
We are now proposing to retain
this pass option but increase the
pass from $25 to $40.
