Type of Tie-in

There are some types of tie-in.

1. Existing point type.
These are only installing the new piping spool on the existing point that has already provided. Type of
connection is normally by flanges or threaded connection. (Easiest type)

Advantages: easiest connection because only flange joint connection so need less material, cost,
time, method, worker for installation and not necessary to do hydrotest or RT on field.
Disadvantages: This tie in location is fixed so cannot be changed or moved.
2. Line Isolation Type.
This type is used to install a new piping spool and isolation valve on the existing line. But before the
installation, isolation activity shall be performed using existing isolation valve on an existing line where tie
in point will be built. Type of connection is normally by flange connection or threaded connection and
welding connection or combination of them.

Advantages: 1) The tie in location can be installed as per our desired, 2) Existing Plan no need to be
shutdown.
Disadvantages: Need more material, time, worker, safety, equipment, method and inspection/test to
be provided on field, UT thickness measurement before cut the existing line.
3. Shut Down type.
This type is used to install a new piping spool and isolation valve or others on the existing line
when the plant was shutdown. Type of connection is normally by flange connection or threaded
connection and welding connection or combination of them.
Advantages: The tie in location can be installed as per our desired.
Disadvantages: 1) Need more material, time, worker, safety, equipment, method and inspection/test
to be provided on field. 2) Working time is limited to counter the shutdown time.

4. Hot Tapping Type.

This type is used to install a new piping spool and isolation valve on the existing line when the line
still lives (running). Type of connection is normally by flange connection and welding connection
(branch/sticker connection). (Most difficult and dangerous type)

Advantages: 1) Tie in location can be installed as per our desired, 2) Existing Plan no need to be
shutdown and no need to be isolated.
Disadvantages: 1) Need more material, time, worker, safety, equipment, method and inspection/test
to be provided on field more than other tie-in type. 2) Most dangerous type because of there is welding
activity on lives line, UT thickness measurement before cut the existing line.
On Tie in Activity, Tie in joint also called as Golden joint, which means that we need to give more
attention or more care about this joint regarding the quality of joints. Thats why the joint shall be 100 %
NDT, RT for Butt joint and PT or MT for other than butt joint (depend on material used), and then to be
tested by performing pressure test according to the relevant/applicable code/requirement.
