Parent Participation Program

by Sally Ames

Parent Participation is a familyfocused, integrated approach to

learning offered through the San
Luis Coastal Unified School District
Adult School. Classes are held
in San Luis Obispo at the Adult
School and C.L. Smith Elementary
School, in Los Osos at Sunnyside
Elementary School, and in Morro
Bay at Morro Elementary School.

Parenting is a joy and a challenge.

Caregivers can come with an
infant, toddler, or preschooler to
an adult and child activity class
or find support in a class for
parents only. All adults in a

the next few years, Johnson and

improved upon Johnsons electric
tree lights. In 1890, they took them
to the market place, publishing a
28-page brochure about Edison

product in popular magazines.

Thomas Edison, the inventor

of the first successful practical
light bulb, created the very
first strand of electric lights.
During the Christmas season
of 1880, these strands were
placed around the outside of his

which would go on to become
part of the National Carbon

long-lasting alkaline battery).
Festoons were still considered
expensive at $12 per string
(slightly less than an average
weeks wages for most people),
but that problem would be
solved when GE attempted to
patent their Christmas lighting
festoon. The patent application
was refused, because the product
was based on knowledge that
an ordinary wireman possessed.
With the market wide open, other
companies and inventors began
to produce their own tree light
sets and the American Christmas
light industry was born.
Modern Lighting
Christmas lights (aka fairy lights)
now come in a wide variety of
colors and styles. These days,
most string lights are LED. A lightemitting diode (LED) emits light
when activated. When a suitable
voltage is applied to the leads,
electrons are able to recombine
with electron holes within the
device, releasing energy in the
form of photons. This effect
is called electroluminescence,
and the color of the light

(corresponding to the energy

of the photon) is determined
by the energy band gap of the
semiconductor.
LED lights are brighter than
incandescent, available in a wider
variety of colors, and they are more
than twice as energy efficient.
Previously, you could connect up
to 5 strings of incandescent lights
to one outlet without exceeding
the maximum current available.
Anything greater and you would
risk heating up the first light and
risking melted wires or even a fire.
With LED lights, you can add up
to 10 strings of lights. In addition,
LED strings are being made
compact enough that a small
battery can be used to power the
lights. Add a solar panel the size
of a wallet and these lights can
be placed outside far from an
electrical outlet and left to run
all night. String lighting can be
used to outline building features,
trees, and shrubbery. Stake lights
can be placed along walkways
and throughout garden areas
to highlight trees and holiday
displays.
Laser projector style holiday
lights are being used to generate
some very interesting animated
effects. These are becoming a
popular alternative or adjunct to
stringing lights, because setup is
much simpler and quicker. As they
become more affordable, you can
also get a lot of bang for your buck.
Most are intended for outside use
and turn on automatically after

All light projectors require a

their images. You can use the

this purpose. Fascinating effects

I love it when it rains. Every year,

people living on the Central Coast
wait for the rains to turn our brown
hills to green. The water provides
a beautiful landscape, but also a
free supply of food for local cattle
that graze in the hills and valleys.
Weve had a few inches of rain so
far this season, and I am hoping
for several more inches to fill our
lakes, reservoirs, and underground
water tables.
One of my favorite things to do
during a rain storm is go to
downtown San Luis Obispo and
stand in the middle of Queenie
Bridge next to the mission and see
the level of San Luis Obispo Creek.
If it has been a storm that gave us
several inches of rain, the creek
will rise so high that the sidewalks
alongside the creek disappear. On
a normal day, you can see large
rocks in the creek below Queenie
Bridge, but during a heavy rain the
rocks will disappear due to the
rising water. It is well worth a trip
to see how high the creek can rise.

During the winter rains, all of the

streets in town became a muddy
mess and made it difficult for the
horse-drawn wagons to travel. The
people in town started asking Mr.
Higuera to take care of the road in
front of his farm because it was the
entrance to town. Soon everyone
started calling the road Higuera

road on that side of town. Higuera
was not the only street that was
named due to rain in the city.

The first recorded flooding in the

During the years 1772 to 1776, San

several occasions and forced the
missionaries to relocate. By around

end of town and started a farm.
San Luis Obispo Creek was once an
open waterway running through
the middle of the city. Chorro
Street stopped at Monterey Street
because the creek blocked traffic
from going through to Higuera
Street. Some people would ride
their horses down into the creek
and cross over to Higuera, but most
wagons could not do this. Soon,
many small businesses started
popping up all along the creek. The
problem during the rainy season
was that the creek would rise to a
level where horses could not cross
it safely. As the creek would flood,
the high water level would also
flood the tents and buildings that
were located along the creek sides

on Monterey and Chorro Streets.

In more recent history during the
early 1970s, there was a storm that
caused the worst flooding that the
city had experienced in many years.
The rain was so heavy and San Luis
Obispo Creek overflowed so much
that the streets of the city were
completely underwater, along
with the freeway at the Los Osos
Valley off ramp. Higuera Street
was underwater with small waves
breaking right down the middle of
the street. The creek turned into a
river and the city made plans after
the floods to develop a better
drainage system.
In the 1990s, I remember that
Laguna Lake flooded so badly that
the homes along Oceanaire Street
were completely flooded and many
had major damage. A few years
ago, we had a moderate rainfall
and I drove downtown to check
out the creek to see how high it
had risen. I happened to arrive just
in time to see the county rescue
squad in the creek saving a couple
of knuckleheads who thought they
could kayak down the creek. As
soon as they put their kayaks in
the water, they flipped over and
one of them crawled under the
bridge at Broad Street and had to
be rescued.
Rain is a wonderful thing, but too
much can become a big problem.
Lets all hope for a nice normal
rainy season to make our hills
green and grow enough grass to
feed the county cattle population.
Stay dry everyone!

you can help to keep your brain as

fit as the rest of your body.
With all of these great benefits,
you will want to ensure that
you stick with exercise over the
long haul. Before committing
to a workout routine, make sure
that your activity of choice is
something that you can enjoy.
Whether you choose walking,
taking a group fitness class,
hiking, biking, lifting weights,
or yoga, be sure it is something
that you like to do. If you commit
yourself to an activity you dislike,
you might feel discouraged and
stop working out all together.
So search around, try some new
activities, and if it helps, get
your friends or family members
to join you.
Getting other
people involved in your healthful
lifestyle can help to increase your
enjoyment and accountability.

Central Coast families
with the resources
they need to thrive!

What do you offer

Central Coast families?

Display advertising in Central Coast Family offers an

extraordinary value. Our loyal readers are relatively
mature, prosperous, and educated family members
in two of Californias most affluent counties. They
take an active role in all aspects of parenting and
purchasing.
Every issue includes original feature articles and
calendar listings for six weeks of local family events.
Your ad is viewed the whole month through; not
discarded after a day or a week.
We offer the lowest rates in our region (and discounts
for non-profits or ads running 3 months or more).
All of our advertisers also enjoy FREE: full color
printing; basic graphic design; preferred placement
options; monthly edits; and website exposure!

Advertiser Comments
Thank you for providing the single best source of
useful information and encouragement for families in
this area. Our whole family enjoys reading CCF and
we refer to your event pages often. Our customers
seem to love it too - as we need to keep more copies

I have received more phone calls from being in
Central Coast Family than any other place I have
advertised (including the Yellow Pages and Internet
Yellow Pages). Thanks for everything!
