Testing Adhesive Bond Strength of Cafco 300

Introduction

Following a request from Phil Brownhill (Business Development Manager, Promat International Spray
Coatings Division), BRE have carried out a series of adhesive bond strength tests on samples reported to
be Cafco 300 delivered to BRE during June 2010. Two sets of samples were received, one at 15 mm
thickness, the other at 50 mm thickness.
This report contains a factual account of the testing undertaken.

Details of tests carried out

Adhesive bond strength tests were carried out following the procedure given in EGOLF AGREEMENT EA
05:1999 Method for the measurement of bonding properties of fire protection materials applied to steel,
concrete and steel / concrete composite structures.
With agreement from the client, test plates measuring 350 mm x 650 mm were used as the test substrate to
facilitate placement in the test machine.
Test results are summarised in Section 3, with detailed results presented in Appendix A.
Details of the sample preparation witnessed by BRE Global Ltd are given in Appendix B.

Steel Plate Preparation

Six mild steel plates/trays were prepared under the supervision of BRE Global Limited, 3 No. 350 mm x 650
mm x 5 mm thick complete with a 10 mm upstand and 3 No. 350 mm x 650 mm x 5 mm thick complete with
a 60 mm upstand.
Four of the plates/trays were shot blasted as instructed by the test sponsor and immediately primed with
either International Interprime 306 or International Intergard 269 with the remaining two left un-primed as
detailed in Table B1 below. The fabrication, shot blasting and priming of the plates/trays was carried out by
a company independent of the client under the instruction of BRE Global Limited.
The plates/trays were then transported to Promat UK, Lawn Road, Carlton in Lindrick, Worksop
Nottinghamshire, S81 9LB for application of the material under test.

Sample selection of CAFCO 300

Sample selection commenced on the 10th February 2010 at the Promat facility.
Two Bags of CAFCO 300 were selected from stock by Stephen Howard of BRE Global with the batch
reference 2317281 and 2369100.
Application of CAFCO 300
The primed plates/trays were coated with DA947 Styrene Acrylic Copolymer (see Figures B1 and B2)
before the application of the CAFCO 300. The DA947 was mixed at a ratio of 3:1 (DA947: Water) and then
applied to the plates/trays
The DA947/water solution was applied using a hand brush to give an even coating over the surface of the
trays.

The application of the CAFCO 300 commenced on the 26 March 2010 by Promat staff in the presence of
Stephen Howard of BRE Global.
All of the plates/trays were laid out in a designated spray area within the Promat facility. The selected bags
of CAFCO 300 were then prepared for application under the supervision of BRE Global. See Figure B3.
The CAFCO 300 (20kg bag) was mixed to a ratio of 36 litres of water: 1 bag, then spray applied using a
Putzmeister P11.

Figure B3
The specimens were then allowed to cure at the Promat facility sufficiently in order to allow them to be
transported to BRE Global, Bucknalls Lane, Watford, Hertfordshire, WD25 9XX where the testing as
detailed in the main body of this report was carried out.
