Question Description
1 a
Briefly explain how air bags can help preventing severe injuries to the occupants in the event of an
accident?
b
2

Explain with the help of a neat sketch the construction and working of a three way catalytic convertor
and describe how such emission control systems can reduce the harmful effects of the exhaust gasses.
From the fundamental standpoint, how is ABS (antilock braking system) different from ICS (traction
control system)? Enlist the real life situations (with appropriate explanation) where these systems are
most effective.

7
6

Explain in detail the construction and working of an ABS system.

A tandem master cylinder employed in automotive hydraulic brakes is shown in the Figure. Explain
with the help of a neat sketches that how this tandem design shall come into action in the following
two situations:
Fluid line A ruptures
Fluid line B ruptures

shows the wheel alignment of the front wheels of a vehicle. In which direction (Left or Right)
the vehicle will tend to be pulled and why? How will you rectify this problem without changing the
caster angle?

Study the starter motor circuit shown in the Figure and give appropriate reasons to the following
observations during troubleshooting:
Voltmeter reads OV when + terminal of the voltmeter is connected to point F and negative
terminal is connected to A, but the starter motor doesn't start.

Voltmeter reads 12V when + terminal of the voltmeter is connected to point F and negative
terminal is connected to A, but the starter motor doesn't start.
Voltmeter reads approx. 5.5V when one of the terminals of the voltmeter is connected to clean
spot on or near the center of the battery positive post and the other terminal is connected to J,
but the starter motor doesn't start
