English Storytelling Competition 2016 for SJKC & SJKT Kelantan

1. General Rules & Regulations
1.1 This competition is open to all SJKC & SJKT in Kelantan.
1.2 Each school is to send only ONE participant for this storytelling competition.
1.3 This competition is open to pupils in Year 4 and below.
1.4 The story that is to be presented can be from any printed text, adapted or original.
1.5 The theme must be based on positive moral values and educational. It is to be
stressed that it must not touch on sensitive issues, i.e. religion, race, creed,
personal attacks, or the like.
1.6 A warning bell will be sounded at the 4 th minute and a final bell at the 5th minute. No
marks will be given from this point on.
1.7 Stage props, backdrops and sound effects are NOT PERMITTED.
1.8 A maximum of 10 marks will be deducted if:
i. The participant makes personal attacks, touch on prohibited issues or the like.
ii. The story lasts less than three minutes. N.B. timing will start from the
moment the participant starts speaking, i.e. from the opening salutations.
1.9 The participant will be disqualified, if:
i. He / She reads from a text or refers to notes or reading materials/
ii. He / She is prompted
iii. He / She uses props, sound effects, backdrops
1.10 The participant with the highest marks will be declared the winner.
1.11 In the case of a tie, a count back will be carried out based on the following criteria,
(ordered according to priority) They are:
i. Language
ii. Delivery
iii. Style
iv. Theme/Storyline

1. Each participant is to deliver a prepared speech conveying the theme
MY COUNTRY, MY PRIDE for 3 to 5 minutes. Bell will be sounded at
the 5th minute. No marks will be given thereafter.
2. The judging criteria will be based on the subject matter and the use of plain
English. Other criteria include the following:
i.

Does the speaker demonstrate the ability to think clearly and creatively?
(30 marks)

ii.

Does the speaker express his/her views with conviction and / or humour?
(30 marks)

iii.

Are the speakers remarks accurate, relevant, interesting and lucid? (30
marks)

iv.

Are the grammar and structure of the sentences uttered correct? (10 marks)

N.B. The relevant rules stated in the story telling section apply.
