Justification
At present, about 90 percent of the medicinal plants collection is from the
wild. Nearly 70 percent of plant collections involve destructive harvesting and
thus many species are endangered / threatened. To ensure the availability of
enough material in the future, genetic resources of each medicinal /aromatic
plant must be conserved and multiplied. There is an ever growing demand for
plant based drugs for internal consumption and export purpose. This has
resulted in spurt in the number of pharmacies in Indian system of medicine
scattered throughout the country. This has created a problem in supply and
availability of sufficient quantities of medicinal plants for manufacture of
genuine drugs. In order to meet this situation, measures are needed to promote
the nursery activities /cultivation of medicinal plants. There is also a need to
create awareness among the farmers about the value of these plants. In this
context, Gurukula has done excellent job in promoting the commercial
cultivation of medicinal and aromatic crops. Due to our efforts many farmers
are cultivating these crops. The major problem in the cultivation of these plants
is the non-availability of genuine planting material at a reasonable price in Ghat
and Malanad areas of Karnataka. Farmers have to depend upon distant places,
and hence it adds additional cost on cultivation. Hence, formers generally
hesitate to adopt these crops for cultivation due to non-availability of planting
material and high risk of marketing. Hence, it is necessary to establish a nursery
of medicinal and aromatic plants which will definitely ensure the supply of
large quantity of planting material to the farmers.
