Homework Set #1

Problem #1
A uniform deformation is applied to trapezoidal body KLMN (shown below), causing it
to deform such that L and N are shifted to L and N respectively while K remains fixed
at the origin. Determine the resultant displacement of M (to M) and the strains 11 , 12 ,
and 22 . In addition, determine the maximum principal tensile strains and their
directions

Problem #2
3D structures such as crystals often experience a volumetric change when elastically
loaded with stresses below the proportional limit due to the resulting elastic strains.
Would we expect the volume to increase or decrease? Why and under what
condition(s)? Using values from the following table, estimate the magnitude of this
change for two cubic metals, nickel and iron, and one cubic ceramic, NaCl, loaded in
tension. Comment on how the magnitudes of the elastic constants effect the change in
volume of the crystal.

Problem #3
Show that the principal stresses in a thin-walled closed-end, linear elastic cylinder
(shown below), subjected to internal pressure P in equilibrium are given by:

Where R is the radius, L the length and t the wall thickness (t << R) of the vessel. State
all assumptions

Problem #4
A thin-walled tube with radius R, length L, and wall thickness t is bonded to two rigid
plates as shown below. The tube is then stretched an amount L, and the top plate is
twisted an amount o relative to the bottom plate. Assume Poissons ratio is zero for
the tube
(a) Find the directions of the principal axes relative to the cylindrical coordinate unit
vectors: e, e, and ez
(b) Find the maximum tensile and maximum shear strains

Problem #5
You are given a cylindrical torsion bar of cold drawn mild steel of length l = 15 and
radius Ro = 0.40, which is subjected to a steady torque M.

(a) If the solid bar is twisted elastically through a small angle as shown in Fig. A,
derive the following expression for the maximum shear strain
