Question 4
Read the passage on waste disposal below.
Most of us go about our daily affair, without giving much thought to what happens to all the
waste we produce everyday. We should spare some thought about disposal of wastes. What
happens to our rubbish? Where does it end up in? According to an independent research
presented at a Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology Symposium last year, the main
approach of getting rid of solid waste is through landfills.
In 2012 alone, Malaysia with a combined population of over 29 million citizens generated
approximately 25 000 metric tonnes of domestic waste per day. The average Malaysian, in this
case, produced anywhere from 0.85 - 1.5 kilograms of waste per day.
The Department of Environment (DOE) of Malaysia reports that out of the 25 000 metric tonnes
of waste collected every day, 45 per cent is organic waste (leftover food, manure, sewage, green
waste, animal industry waste), 24 per cent are plastic waste, seven per cent paper waste, six per
cent metal waste (industrial) and 18 per cent glass waste (bottles). The collected wastes are then
transported to 165 disposal sites which cater for 95 per cent of all Malaysia waste. Out of these
165 sites, eight are sanitary landfills while the rest are just open dumps.
Unfortunately, 80 per cent of the open dumps have reach almost maximum capacity and some
will be shut down in the coming years. Eleven more sanitary landfills are being planned,
constructed and implemented in various stages.
What happens then in the future when we run out of dumping grounds? Local governments and
authorities in major cities in Malaysia are studying other waste management approaches. Among
them is an approach to move away from unsanitary landfills due to its capability to produce
greenhouse gas emissions such as methane and carbon dioxide.
Read the passage carefully and answer questions (a) - (i).

What is the name of the government agency that provides the information on
