EARLY MOORISH AMERICAN CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, SOCIAL AND

CULTURAL HERITAGE ACCOMPLISHMENTS


The following brief timeline gives a peek into the utterly incredible work ethic, vision, and determined
idea of Prophet Drew Ali, giving also a glimpse into the Divine Guidance that directed him.

1913-Moorish American Movement founded at Dixons Barbershop, 181 Warren St, Newark NJ,
by Noble Drew Ali.
1916-Movement named MOORISH DIVINE AND NATIONAL MOVEMENT IN NORTH AMERICA, May
1st, Newark NJ, upon moving meetings into the Rutgers and 12th St. location
1925-The Moorish Temple of Science organizes; Temple #1 officially established October 15 at
329 E. 36th Place, Chicago IL. Chicago becomes the hub of the Moorish American movement.
1926-November 26, the Moorish Temple of Science is incorporated as a civic organization with
the mission statement to uplift fallen humanity and teach our people those things that will make
better citizens out of men and women.
1927-Temples #2 (March 17, Charleston VA), #3 (August 29, Milwaukee, WI), #4 (Detroit, MI), #5
(November 15, Pittsburgh, PA) established. Drew Ali travels to Atlanta GA and visits Marcus
Garvey of the UNIA in federal prison.
1928- Temples #6 (January 11, Richmond VA), #7 (Cleveland OH), #8 (May 1, Pine Bluff AR), #9
(July 16, Chicago IL) at 862 Townsend St., #10 (Newark NJ, July 29), #11 (Philadelphia PA, August
3rd), #12 (Youngstown OH, August 13th) established. Drew Ali attends Sixth Pan-American
Conference on Private International Law/Organization of American States (January 20). The
organization changes from strictly civic to religious via affidavit filed in Cook County (July 20), with
the name changed to the Moorish Science Temple of America after a special meeting held May 2
Drew Ali visits Mexico (May21-June 8) and is presented with the Governors Flag and Cane of
Mexico. The Moorish Guide Newspaper officially launched (August 24). Final draft of the
organizations Divine Constitution and By-Laws unanimously adopted (October 16); its earliest
form was called The Divine Constitution and Laws (1927). The Moorish Guide Newspaper officially
launched (August 24). Drew Ali invited to lecture in Toronto, Canada by Dr. Oscar Brewton. The
first Convention of the Moorish Science Temple held October 15-20; the 5000-member temple
following (Temples #1 and #9) is organized by Drew Ali and register to support prominent local
politicians Alderman Louis B. Anderson, Oscar DePriest, Daniel M. Jackson, and George W.
Blackwell. Oscar DePriest, George Blackwell, and Jesse Binga (founder of Binga State Bank)
became members of the Moorish Science Temple of America. Gov. Len Small, Louis Anderson,
Jesse Binga, Oscar DePriest, agree to give addresses at the convention. Aaron Payne El, prominent
Chicago attorney, civic activist, and 2nd Supreme Business Manager for the Moorish Science
Temple of America, represents the Hon. Daniel Jackson at the convention. Through the backing
of the Moorish American community, Oscar DePriest becomes the first African-American
Congressman for more than a quarter of a century (Hon. George F. White preceded him by 28
years). The Convention included in its activities a Moorish American Parade that included more
than 3000 Moorish Americans in traditional cultural costumes, each carrying both Moorish and

American flags in their hands, marching from 37th and Federal Streets East to Wabash, north on
Wabash to 32nd St. then onto the Temple at 3140 Indiana Avenue. The Prophet stated, our
nationality started with this parade. Plans are advertised in the Moorish Guide Newspaper for
the formation of a Moorish American township (with police, an alderman, judges, etc.) in
connection with a large farm. The Moorish Mens Business Club is established; through its efforts
a laundry, a printing press and three grocery stores are established in Detroit, and a moving
company, grocery, manufacturing company, and cafeteria service in Chicago.
1929-Drew Ali hands down Moorish American Marriage Customs. Drew Ali passes away (July 20,
10:10pm) from Pneumonia, as declared by Drew Alis physician, Dr. Clarence Payne El, MSTA
member and brother of Atty. Aaron Payne El.
