An Anthology of Dreams 1

An Anthology of
Dreams
Of Darkness and Light
A Collection of Poems

By William Robert Seay, Jr.

An Anthology of Dreams 2

POEMS

Every poem I write

Is only a place I was
Or am sometimes

Sometimes one
Sometimes both

There’s that that changes

And that that won’t
And poems are just a place
In my flow
An Anthology of Dreams 3

A PEAL OF A BELL

A great bell peals

Ringing at the darkest hour
Men come running to see for themselves
If the darkness is really coming
Amidst the long shadows
Cast by the dim sun

Stars change color or is it colors changing

Who can tell?
Those who leave love behind
Never realize the sun
Stars reflected in a pool
Whose waters find their source
From a deep well

Love changes form but never substance

Being all we feel that seems really real
Hearts together ringing like peals from a great bell

WHEN THE GREAT BELL PEALS

When the Great Bell peals

An Anthology of Dreams 4

And all colors change

Love that has become lost
Becomes a love that will always stay

The love between you and I remains

Like embers glowing from a fiery flame
Of lightning flashing brilliant bright white
Across the windy gray stormy sky

There will be many that remain forever

After the fiery flame of the change
When the Great Bell peals
Changing everything

Blowing love lost

Like a cold winter blown storm
Blowing love lost eternally far away
For now we can only dream of that day

So you and I will always remain

True love has made us the same thing
All we dream to come
Will carry us far far away
Across the vast fields of stars
Glimmering countless in the clear sky
Far away from anything but golden dawns
And eternal love that will always stay and never fade
An Anthology of Dreams 5

WINTER SEA STORM

Gray seas
And cold wind on the beach
Low clouds and a dim sunset

The horizon at dusk

Covered by storm clouds
Lightning flashes
Far out at sea
Gray green grass
Swept by a chill wet breeze

Steel gray rain

Falling in wind driven sheets
Walking slowly down the beach
To the tune of my heartbeat
An Anthology of Dreams 6

TANGLES

Tangles of silken strands

Blowing wild for the breeze to chase
Breaking softly on skin
Like foamy waves crashing softly on sand

Tangles of auburn and gold

Tangled somewhere in the night
Spreading across the bed
Like a glorious halo of shining bright hair
Around her head

Tangled in the morning

Tangled in the moonlight
Tangled tangles at the dawn
Tangling all the time

A CELEBRATION FOR BREATHING

A celebration for breathing

Just lazin’ in the sun
Words with her fade
To long quiet moments
Listening to the breeze
An Anthology of Dreams 7

Through the murmuring trees

Doing nothing is such fun

Watching the sun go down

And all I’ve done all day
Is chase things down hot wavy city streets
Cruising town on a cool July evening
Looking for a dream to ride

Bright shiny lights

In the dark black lighted night
And all I do
Is watch the tube play its thing
Or go see a friend to get entertained

It’s been a long time

Since I spent a day
Doing much of anything

SOMETHING
A Poem for the Homeless

The fire pours like never ending water

Over the hazy figures
Seen faintly
So far have they strayed
An Anthology of Dreams 8

Wandering the dark streets

Looking for a flame
One figure turns
And the light of his stare
Burns a halo of lightning
Across the sky

No name and no meaning

Empty in the rain
Always looking
For somewhere to remain
Something that will stay

SAME TIME
As days change to nights
And light fades
And the hours on the clock go by
I find
I’m never in the same place
At the right time
An Anthology of Dreams 9

Night hides in shadows

The day hides in light
Too bright for my eyes
What I see is somewhere between

And I find
I’m never in the right place
At the same time

TURNING AROUND
Turning around to see her standing there
Quiet brown blazing hair
Golden flecks
In flaming amber

Turning around to stare

Into the sparkling shine
Of deep dark soft eyes
Shining mine into surprise
An Anthology of Dreams 10

Burnt auburn hair long

Curling to the side
Framing beautiful amber eyes

The combining light

Coolly caught my sight

Turning around to see

A slight form dim
In the shadows of dreams
With a lightning smile

Turning around to be dazzled by

Crisp darkly curling hair
And matching twinkling eyes

WONDER
Moonlight your light shines where it may
Those strange lunar ways
Cerberus and darkly silver battlements
Drawn in painted shades
Of thoughtful pale white dreams

Piercing reflected light shines

The better eyes to see
Shadows black and deep
Before the hidden shades revealed by dawn
An Anthology of Dreams 11

Moonlight brings thoughts

Of ageless ancient mysteries
Wonderment glares in rays of ghostly white

Wonder all you please

The only answer you will find
Is in the dawn’s golden light
And the meanings each day brings

INSIDE BEHIND

Way inside my mind

Behind feelings I show sharp and clear
Lie dreams hidden behind
All these normal outside things
An Anthology of Dreams 12

Dreams I hide inside

Dreams of darkness and light
Hidden away from the sight
Of other eyes

TRAFFIC INSIDE
Wavy dim smoke
Hazy white light

Gray clouds melting in front of the fan

Cool air blowing in from the window
On a rainy Monday summer night
An Anthology of Dreams 13

Cool breezes blowing through

The wet leaves outside
And traffic on the rainy street
And traffic inside
Is slight

SNOW FALLS RARELY SOMETIMES

Sliding through things

That come by
And snow
Falls
Rarely sometimes
The energies are all
At the same time

Dancing everywhere
They say it seems
Universal dreams
Create reality
An Anthology of Dreams 14

WORDS SCRAWLED ON SAND

Scrawled words on sand

Wind blown away
Like words the wind and waves
Scatter and wash away on sand

Thoughts are wind driven

Scattered dreams of far places never seen
Only thoughts to have been
New faces from some
Carnival scene of gaiety
Taking away all that’s so well known

Like words on windblown sand

Unclear gray clouds far at sea
Driving foaming white waves over the beach
Washing away wind driven words
From wave rippled sand
As the tide washes in
An Anthology of Dreams 15

And wipes it all away

Don’t expect words on sand to every stay

Let the wind blow you far away
As the waves wash out the days

DIFFERENT ANSWERS IN CHAOS TO

THE QUESTION OF CONFUSION
It’s all in plain view I’m sure
Everyone says so
Everyone seems to know
No one says the same thing
But what does that show?

We all know the answers

They’re all different of course
But everyone has one

No one thinks the same thing

About anything
So how can anything reasonably rhyme?
Lost in all this chaos?
An Anthology of Dreams 16

TIME WITHOUT A SOUND

Time without a sound
Like rain blowing in a strong wind
Blinding steel gray sheets of water
Raging against the flames
Of burning cold ice
So fiery in my eyes

Pavement hard as stone

Reflecting the lightning
Shining from blazing downcast eyes
As visions fill a sun lit mind

Smoldering ruins of ageless ancient castles

Lit by burning flames on a high hill by a far sea
Their black smoked towers rising high
Reaching tall against a clear pale sky

Eyes in the black of the star lighted night

Lit with the fantastic light
Of eternity burning deep within penetrating sight
An Anthology of Dreams 17

ALL YOU CAN EVER DO

All you can ever do
Is tell someone I love you
When the time is right
And your heart says you do
An Anthology of Dreams 18

SEA AND SKY

I look out over the ocean

Ships vague shapes at sea
How they ride so far
Over something so empty
Flat of all shape
Empty of all but waves

Do we travel so very far

In our lives
Till we are simply totally surrounded
By boundless sea and sky?
An Anthology of Dreams 19

THE MOON IN WINTER

The moon and stars shine pale white

Through the Georgia pines
This chill bright night
As the light shines from the frosty grass
Reflections from the sparkle to my eyes

Stars shine without number covering

The clear black country sky
The cold breeze stirs chill through
Whispering brown leaves
And yellow and red left from October
Drift floating in the air
Screech owls howl
And mice scurry under crackling twigs
As I walk through the woods in the dark quiet night
With my thoughts and fantasies

Long lost islands

Snow white sandy tropical shores
Make up my dreams
On this beautiful clear winter night
An Anthology of Dreams 20

MIND TURNS

Sit and think of fanciful things

Shadows of darkness
And beams of bright light

The shadows shade your mind

The shadows of night
Bring out things from a different side

You sometimes see clouds

Floating white over
A day of sky blue
Till the light fades
And the night shadows bring
Out things from a different side

Looking at the endless stars

I wonder why
My vision whirls through space
While my mind twirls with time
An Anthology of Dreams 21

LEAVES ARE ONLY LEAVES BLOWN

AWAY

While time turns I’ll ride a fabulous wind

A high roaring breeze stirring every summer leaf
Blowing fluttering showers of green
In the storms of summer

I’ll ride very leaf blown high by the wind

To wind down my swirling dance
Gently to the soft grassy ground
Away from all shadows of shade
But even falling in the darkest place
My heart has a warm inner flame
And I try to follow its glow

Reflections of the dawn

For leaves are only leaves blown away
The years of your life
Are quite a different thing
An Anthology of Dreams 22

BETWEEN THE DARKNESS AND THE

LIGHT

Between the darkness and the light

Walking these twilight divided lines
Between what is wrong and what is right
Best to remember
To cling to the fire
Of the love in your heart
As the only way to lighten the mind
And the burden
Of the cross of life

And if you would shine

With the light of the fire
Of the love of your heart in your mind
Remember always that fire
Needs something to cling to for fuel
In order to continue to burn bright
So cling always to what your heart
Knows is right
An Anthology of Dreams 23

THIS MORNING

Hanging out on swings in parks

Going back and forth
Over wet clay and damp grass
Waiting for the rain

But the sun shines instead

Back and forth
Going by a tree in the middle
Swinging away time
In the sunshine
On a gray morning
Waiting for it to rain

And now it’s almost dark

And hasn’t rained all day
An Anthology of Dreams 24

ECHOES OF SHADOWS
Echoes of shadows on my mind
Watching shadowy gray shapes
In the moment before dawn breaks
Rain bowed through glass panes
At the end of a Saturday night

I danced with her

Had a chance with her
But I just let her go by
When she could be at my side
Instead of on my mind
I don’t know why
Something did not feel right

Echoes of the shadows of memories of the night

Fading away with the dawn’s light

NIGHT FLIGHT
An Anthology of Dreams 25

Climbing through clouds

Webs of dusky gray
Clinging to some dreaming idea

Riding spinning updrafts

Of chill air in pale drawn moonlight
Dark blue waves on the lake below
With flashes of white crests
Sparkling with a lunar twinkle

Breezing along in streaming air

Pulled by the drag of diving night hawks
Ninety miles an hour diving
Twisted claws extended
Shrieking air
Wings swept back by terrific tornadic force

Below
Dim in faint starlight
Owls prowl creatures in the tall amber fields
Wild cat’s eyes glitter prowling owls
All after any moving thing in the great grassy sweep
Of the yards and meadows

TWILIGHT DIVIDED LINES

Between the darkness and the light
An Anthology of Dreams 26

Walking these twilight divided lines

Love left behind and never realizes the sun

I remember
Dancing figures dimly twirling
Swirling leaping shadows
Dark forms whirling around
The flaming fire of their feelings

The stereo booms singing silvery songs

That echo in the dark hollows of the distance
Under the pale white summer moon

A light kiss that softly caresses

Your hair so soft and fine
In the gentle touches of darkness
Quiet warm summer nights spent
Talking and touching
Walking the twilight divided lines
Between the light of day and the shadows of night

Pale moonlight and clouds shining silver

Gray swifts sweeping in the dusky sky above us
Hearing your heart in your touch

TRAVELING SUMMER WINDS

Traveling on warmly blowing winds

Breezing swiftly through the trees
An Anthology of Dreams 27

Never slowed by a thing

Seeing only vague shapes blurring by
It all caught itself on the winds of a sigh

Long summer days run into such short nights

Warm winds blowing in the July dawn
Stir streamers of rippling green leaves
Shining golden in the morning light

It seems I spend my time these days

Dreamily gazing at horizon lines
As thoughts stir the mind to make me smile
Traveling on warm winds blowing
In cool summer evenings
Traveling so far and yet never leaving

As the light fades dreams of the day

Change to dreams of the night
Traveling on cool stormy winds
That blow hard in the storms of the dark
So that the trees bend and sway in raging rain
Until the daylight hits my eyes and I awake

BETWEEN THE DARKNESS AND THE

LIGHT II

Shadows become images of shade

In order to allow the stars to shine
An Anthology of Dreams 28

To give our eyes a rest from the daylight

To give our dreams a restful place to shine

Between the darkness and the light

The dark gray dusk and bright orange dawn
The abysmal blackness and lighted sight
We all wonder as we wander
About dreams and love and life

Shadows lay wavering dark gray under the trees

Their branches dancing in the warmth of the dawn
breeze
Shadows lie everywhere by day
Always there is light somewhere by night

The stars and moonlight

Lightning and fire
There is a delicate balance
Between the darkness and light
But sometimes it is not easy to find

ETERNAL DREAMER
Far places
Fiery wandering comet tails
Tails of trails
An Anthology of Dreams 29

From the candle smoke

The smell of honey and soft wax

Sleepy at dawn
But up with the sun
Down and around
Circling inside
Looking for the right place to ride

Patterns and pieces of infinity

Swirling around
Looking for a dream
To land in eternity

ROMANTICIZING DREAMS
I just romanticize my dreams
Scheme all these schemes
Thinking how good it could be

I just romanticize my schemes

An Anthology of Dreams 30

Dream all these dreams

Thinking you’re the best I’ve ever seen

The night fades

And takes my dreams of you away
But I’ll just keep
Dreaming up romantic schemes
Until I make you mine someday

CATCH A BREATH OR TWO

Don’t know why I look at you
And see the things I do
Don’t know why
I feel the way I feel
An Anthology of Dreams 31

Sunrise caught me sleepy-eyed

Slow down
Slow down
Catch a breath or two

Love caught me by surprise

Slow down
Slow down
Catch a breath or two
Falling too fast for you

(Collaboration with Deborah Hardin)

FIRE FOR LIFE

Like a roman candle
A comet streaming across the sky
Exploding with a fiery trail across the stars
Competing with their light

Tracers and streamers burning

An Anthology of Dreams 32

Glowing embers falling from the sky

Mark the years gone by

Those who burn with a passion for all of Life

Flame forever
A light lives in their hearts
That never fades or flickers or smolders
Or dies

SOME DREAM

Some dream of the night

Makes me feel this way
Say these things
Think thoughts that change

Some dream of the past

Brought me to this place
An Anthology of Dreams 33

Gave me something
To change feelings this way

Thoughts of warmth in the chill of the night

Memories to remember in the warm morning sunlight
Words whispered to her
In the soft pale gray shadowy dawn

Sometimes the right words come along

Sometimes nothing we say can be wrong

Some dream of the day’s haze

It makes everything appear so strange
Carries thoughts far away
Puts everything through change
Makes me feel what I can only try to say

BLINDED MOVINGLY
Never such a time
Certainly no such place
Dreams have never seen
Thoughts of such things

She sways across the room

An expression on her face
Never before viewed
Or felt in that certain different way
An Anthology of Dreams 34

Enigmas don’t last

She has something from someplace
That a million years hence
The understanding of her meaning
Should be quite obvious to see
Her eyes quite easy to read
Her ways simply perceived

Reason more than likely though

Will be blinded by her movements eternally

SOFT MOLTEN STEEL

Listen to the music
Whispering in winter winds
Melodies of cold ice
From dreams that have
never been

Feet pouncing on pavement

Glaring hard from a hard lighted sun
Concrete glittering way back
Behind tense eyes
Being constantly tough
Like an animal in the jungle
An Anthology of Dreams 35

Wherever he runs nothing leaves alone

Run him a corner to hide into

Nip his heels
Till he turns and snarls
And escapes in a blur and flash of eyes
Of soft molten steel

LOOK
Time comes around to begin again
At the end of every endless end
An Anthology of Dreams 36

Look at her eyes

Blue like a clear autumn sky
Flecked green like spring leaves

Look in her eyes

All the time
Don’t know what I’m looking for
All I get is a shimmering smile

Time comes around to begin again

Look at the time it’s early still

Look in her eyes

They reflect the gentle brightness
She brings to my life

SHADOWS AND WAVERING FLAMES

All these vague things
Shadows and wavering candle flames
An Anthology of Dreams 37

Burning the sky out of night

Leaving white stars dimly twinkling behind

Faintly I can see

All these vague things
Unclear melodies tinkling
Like swirling bells ringing in the rain

Watching the night turn dawn gray

Another night gone
And the shadows of candle flames fade

COME TO YOU

When you shine like Eldest Brother Sun

And are free
Then come to you as I come to me
Come to me as I come to you
For you and I are but the same thing

When all our past is but a dream

And our future yet to be
Then come to you as I come to me

When all hearts are whole once more

And all pain is no more
Then come to you
As I come to me
An Anthology of Dreams 38

When Peace on earth becomes your heart’s

reality
Come to me
As I come to you
With love for all the love
We can truly Be

SAY THINGS

Say things softly in the shadows of tall trees

Their leaves glittering silvery under
A chill clouded crescent autumn moon
While I watch your reflection shimmering in the
Ripples of the wind stirred deep blue dark pool
Say all those things you so very much mean to me

Shadowy next to me in the soft darkness

The water dark gray and blue
Shining wavy silvery mirrors of you
Under the straight steep sides of the banks
At the sandy shoreline
An Anthology of Dreams 39

Your eyes say things

Glinting in the dark
Reflected in the water with the bright pale moon
Bright sparkling eyes
Gleaming with twinkles of silvery light
Reflections of starlight way above
On this chill fall night talking to you quietly
In the deep dark shadows of tall trees
Listening to you say things by the stream side

Say things with a gentle smile

Your eyes a mirror of the light you light in mine….
ETERNAL DREAMER

Far places
Fiery wandering comet tails
Tails of trails
From the candle smoke
The smell of honeysuckle and soft wax

Sleepy at dawn
But up with the sun
Down and around circling inside
Looking for the right feeling to ride

Patterns and pieces of infinity swirling around

Looking for a dream to land in eternity
An Anthology of Dreams 40

JOURNEYS
When the journey is done
We’ll add the miles
And see where we’ve gone

Pack on my back
Hat for the rain
Traveling with the sun
Seems the journey is over
Before it has begun

Once years ago

I crossed Canada from Toronto to Vancouver
And looked back over where I had gone

Miles and miles of highway

Wilderness and great cities
Sometimes other people
An Anthology of Dreams 41

Sometimes empty spaces

Never reached by anyone

When every journey is over

There is always time to look back
Then look ahead
And start another one
