Rising Early & Chanting
By His Grace Mahatma Prabhu.
Probably one of the biggest obstacles for you is that you are not accustomed to
rise early. Rising early is one of the most important practices of Krsna conscio
usness for many reasons. So this, along with your japa, is something you need to
work on. When devotees ask me how to make advancement in Krsna consciousness, I
simply say, Get up early. I find that everything else will come from this. The po
int is that to take to Krsna consciousness requires adjustment in our thinking a
nd actions, and if we are serious about advancing, then we have to make these ad
justments. Is it easy? No. Can we do it? Yes, with Krsna s help, we can. He first
wants to see what we want. Then he helps us. So I suggest you focus on these two
areas: how to chant better and how to rise earlier. If you rise earlier, your j
apa will be better because japa in the early morning is generally many times mor
e powerful than chanted at other times. And if your japa improves, you ll have mor
e impetus and strength to rise early, whereas if you just chant your rounds simp
ly to get them done, without real feeling and taste, your impetus to rise early
to chant good rounds will be lacking. The point is that to become Krsna consciou
s is a science, and if we do the right things, it will become easier and easier
and more relishable. If we do things wrong then we struggle against ourselves. I
t s okay if something is difficult. Just understand that difficulty is good for us
. It makes us stronger. Don t think, It s too difficult. I can t do it. I won t even try.
What s the use? That attitude will make your life in Krsna consciousness very diff
icult. If you don t get adjusted to rising early and chanting your rounds early in
the day (when you don t have to think of other things), then it s likely you ll be ba
ttling with this handicap for years to come, or maybe throughout your life. Deal
ing with it now will be of immense help to you for the rest of your life, especi

ally if it s your desire to someday take initiation because then you vow to chant
16 rounds every day. And really, you are vowing to chant 16 good rounds, not jus
t get 16 rounds done.
A lot of successful professional people stress rising early and meditating early
in the morning. If they are doing this, certainly it s embarrassing if we are not
doing it.
And we actually say the purports to the verses of the Gita given by Prabhupada a
re explaining the Gita as it is and that if you just read the verses, then you w
on t understand and you ll have to create your own interpretation. The idea is we re
present a disciplic line that has presented the same ideas for thousands of year
s. We are messengers, not creators of new ideas. Interpretation means someone sp
eculates as to what the verse might mean without reference to the traditional un
derstanding and within the context of the other body of literature (Vedas) it re
presents. In the Gita, Krsna says He can be understood by devotion, so only a de
votee is qualified to understand Krsna and thus qualified to explain Krsna and H
is teachings.
Read the Gita in terms on integrating the knowledge into your life, even it at f
irst it doesn t seem to relate to your life. Reading and discussing with someone a
lso helps. You can also read in research mode. Think of a question and research
the book for the answer. Another thing is to think of the essential point Prabhu
pada is making in each purport by asking what does Prabhupada really want me to
understand here.
Hare Krsna,
Mahatma das
Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts. Develop
the mind of equilibrium. You will always be getting praise and blame, but do no
t let either affect the poise of the mind: follow the calmness, the absence of p
ride."
