A10 Macbeth
Act 2, Scenes 1 - 2 What strengths and weaknesses of Lady Macbeth are revealed in
these scenes? Discuss her role in the murder and its cover-up, her jittery response to the
sound of her husband's voice, why she did not murder Duncan herself, and how she
deals with her husband's fears.
Lady Macbeth shows to be weak in that shes not compassionate enough to think about his well
being after the murder. Her motivation to carry out a murder crime seems to stem from
Macbeths weakness, when she sees her husband acting cowardly over the crime hes
committed, she reminds him he still needs to smear Duncan's blood on the guards to frame
them. She goes on to do the action herself when Macbeth said he wouldnt look at the corpse
ever again.

Act 2, Scenes 3 - 4 What is the most memorable mental picture you formed while reading
this act? Jot down a few vivid words and phrases to describe that picture.
The most memorable mental picture I could think of in Act 2 Scene 3 is Macduff shouting
murder.
I can imagine him screeching in a high pitch voice, Murder! Treason! Murder! I imagined a
man checking on his leader, knocking on his bedroom door and not getting a response.
Becoming worried, Macduff opens the door only to find his ruler dead.

Act 2, Scenes 3 - 4 How has Macbeth changed as a result of the events in this act? Find
lines that illustrate these changes. What happens before and after he kills Duncan?
Discuss his state of mind and fears for the future. Do you feel sympathy for Macbeth?
Macbeth has just committed murder, and says Duncans blood can never be washed from his
hands. You can picture him trembling in fear, with a shocked expression on his face, riddled
with guilt and shame.
Before Macbeth kills Duncan its obvious he isnt mentally prepared to become a murderer, in
Act 2 Scene 1, he hallucinates a ghostly dagger floating before him. After he kills Duncan, he
states he heard a ghostly voice call out to him saying, Macbeth will sleep no more! Macbeth
does murder sleep. His paranoia goes further as he murders the sleeping guards as well,

thinking they will renounce killing duncan, and cause more conflict for him in the future. One
could feel sympathy for Macbeth as for he was enticed into doing whatever it takes to becoming
king. Others could criticize Macbeth for not refusing his wifes demands, or arresting her for
conspiracy of murdering the king.

Act 3, Scenes 1 - 3 Why are Macbeth and Lady Macbeth unhappy as king and queen?
Macbeth and his wife arent satisfied with their roles as king and queen because they still have
people that pose a threat to their political status. They assumed Duncan was the only conflict
theyll face, but there are plenty of people like Duncans children, Banquo and his son, Macduff
and his distaste for Macbeth can potentially overthrow them.

Act 3, Scenes 4 - 6 So far, Macbeth has seen a bloody ghost and a floating dagger and
has heard voices. What does his active imagination reveal about his inner conflicts?
With Macbeths active imagination, it proves he is too mentally unstable to hand being a murder,
and being a ruler in general. He is too paranoid about his title being revoked that he kills those
that could pose a threat to him.
