eauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder. When it comes to packaging, so are
structure and functionality. To be chosen a winner in BRANDPACKAGINGs annual
Design Gallery competition, a package must excel in all three areas.

CRAIG DUBITSKY
ceo, hello
JASON FOSTER
founder, replenish

This issue highlights some of the best packaging designs submitted to BRANDPACKAGING for
this years competition in ve categories: glass, rigid plastic, paperboard, exible and metal. In each
category, a single package was chosen for a Peoples Choice Award, as well as one Editors Choice
Award from among all categories.

DR. ANDREW HURLEY

assistant professor & research associate, clemson university

What makes this event exceptional among industry awards is that observers
have two opportunities to vote, after viewing packaging photos online or
seeing the actual packages in person at the Packaging That Sells conference,
which was held during October in Chicago. Ballots from both venues were
then combined to determine the winners.

Literally thousands of new consumer products are introduced each year, and
only a tiny percentage are ever entered in such a competition. Hundreds of
superior designs may populate the shelves of a host of retail outlets. Still, the
packaging on these pages represent the pulse of todays design thinking.

Design innovation does not require total change; often it is evolutionary. Subtle modications,
material advances and color trends are among the factors that can be combined to create an awardwinning package. Please take some time to peruse the 2016

thea's english standard tea

brand owner THEA'S ENGLISH STANDARD TEA

Theas English Standard Tea is an eight SKU range of zero calorie, sugar-free iced tea
products. Theas provides a healthy and sophisticated alternative in a sea of heavily sugarladen iced tea products. The surprisingly complex-tasting tea offers unexpected flavors such
as Black Rose and Dandelion Mint. The goal of the package was to visually communicate
superiority, naturalness, freshness and cleanness. It shows the small-batch, healthful nature
of the product at a glance. The bottle represents a jewel-like presentation, while the clear label
showcases the product in a modified 16-oz. French Square glass bottle. The faceted corners
enhance the bottle while crisp, soft graphics emphasize the botanical theme.

rocker spirits
brand ownerr ROCKER SPIRITS

Rocker Spirits is a recently opened micro-distillery based in Littleton, Colo. When thinking about how he wanted the
Rocker brand to be portrayed in packaging, Duston Evans, co-founder of Rocker Spirits, drew inspiration from Americana
and the vintage industrial era. For Evans, glass was the best material to convey his passion for that time. He sought a
design for Rocker that would stand out on the shelf and command immediate brand recognition. The design is based on a
vintage oil can from the 1930s with a rounded shape and a tilt feature for ease of pouring that conveys the high quality of
the product while capturing the brands retro vintage industrial personality.

celebrates love with positive, uplifting messages and artwork. Yoo also has a personal mission to reduce the use of singleuse plastic. Having a bottle and closure that is entirely made in the United States was also important to Yoo. The swing-top

Ace Hardware offers nearly 9,000 products through its private label program. The weed killer

at a competitive price. Weed killers can be confusing, so the goal was to be clean and concise,
clearly calling out the features and benets. This is a unique category in that the packaging stays

brand ownerr EOS

eos is a beauty and skincare brand that originated around a key insight: women want products that deliver moments of
delight that transcend daily routines. Through a blend of science, social listening, research, sensory panels and intuition,
eos created products designed for women only. All eos product packaging uses unconventional shapes that are beautiful
and purposeful. The asymmetric bottles emphasize the organic softness of the design, like an extension of the human
body. The high-gloss nish accentuates the curved surfaces. To create a silhouette that is consistent along different types
of closures, an integrated pump was created for the 350-ml bottle, hiding all of the functional hardware that is visible in
most pump lotion bottles. The ip cap solution maintains the same pure silhouette to create a strong visual family.
