When I was looking for college's when I was in high school, I wanted to initially go to a BFA in Directing program.
But, as most young aspiring artists struggle with, my parents weren't approving of that decision. I ended up
spending the last two years as a Communications major and theatre minor at Marist College. I made many friends
and learned a lot about myself while growing up. During this time I found my coursework trite and found my hunger
for theatre growing much more passionate. I discovered home in the school's theatre club. In my two years here I
participated in over a dozen productions in a range from directing, to performing, to production managing and
more. But this wasn't what I was getting my schooling for, I was supposed to be striving to be the best Public
Relations and Advertising major I could be. I was cheating myself by doing that at Marist. I stumbled upon a
commencement speech by Jim Carrey a few weeks ago and he stated "You can fail at what you don't want, so
you might as well take a chance on doing what you love." That is why I am applying for colleges again. I am
certain that this is a huge risk, but I am also certain to achieve true happiness in life I have to be satisfied with the
choices that I make, especially as a young adult. To be honest, I never thought I would see the Common
Application website again with my name on top of an application.
At Marist College, I had a lovely support group. These were initially my colleagues in the theatre program but they
so quickly became lifelong friends. I found myself learning more in this program through constructive situations.
For a lack of better terms, this was a "school of hard knocks". I was surrounded with people with a much less
concentrated passion for the arts and were given the majority of free reign without any sort of professional
checkup. Sure we had an advisor but there was only so much we can do in this situation as I found myself losing
the spark that i had and there had to be a change.
By applying to schools for Directing, I hope to surround myself with the necessary situations to ensure my
success. I yearn for more opportunities lucrative to my growth of knowledge in the arts. I plan to take every
opportunity with so much weight because I've learned to appreciate my craft with abundance with the many hats
I've been able to wear over the past decade. Working in tandem with professionals that have the experience to
share with me is something I would magnetize myself to. In the few chances I've had to work alongside people so
seasoned in the arts, I absorbed every ounce of information I could, hoping to become the best I can be as a
director and dramaturge in general. With that in mind I also strive to work with peers that have the same passion
as myself and similar goals for their future in the arts. Collaboration is key to success and working alongside
uniquely driven and talented peers will only make my learning experience all the more optimal.
In a new environment I believe that my success will be tenfold to where I am now. Now having the endurance and
maturity to take this chance on life, I am willing to do anything to prove myself as a director, student and level
headed individual to the institutions that consider my application. Thank you for your time and consideration to
your programs.
