WHY E-BOOKS ARE PREFERABLE TO PRINT
Modern digital technologies today can easily substitute almost any analogue thing that people had
been using for decades or even centuries. Bulky vinyl players have turned into tiny iPods, huge TVsets have become super-flat plasma wall panels, phones are getting more and more impossible to
distinguish from pocket computers, and so on. Books have also undergone such a transformation,
and today many people prefer using an electronic book, or e-book, rather than a regular printed one.
Why? Because e-books are in every possible way better than printed books, no matter what the
antique lovers say.
The most obvious advantage is portability. If you have been a book-lover for a long time, you most
likely had to carry a book or two with you wherever you go. If you could afford carrying a backpack
around, it was not a problem; however, if you are a lady or a clerk in some serious corporation, most
likely you either had to fit a book into your purse or folder, or leave it at home. On the other hand,
any modern e-book is almost flat and light weight, so you can easily carry one even in your pocket.
You can read it in any position, and take it anywhere with you. By the way, try to make it
comfortable to read a printed book while lying on your side it is almost impossible
(Snarkynomad.com). With an e-book device, all your problems with a books weight and shape are
solved.
The next reason why e-books are more preferable is that even a cheap e-book device allows one to
carry the whole Library of Congress in your pocket. Depending on an e-book devices memory
capacity, you can store gigabytes of data on your device. The file format is usually not a problem:
many e-book devices support all popular formats of electronic books such as fb2, djvu, pdf, azw, kfx,
and so on.
Also, electronic books are reasonably cheaper than printed ones, and the price seriously depends on
which store you buy them at, so in fact you can get a lot of nice books for a humble price. Of course,
a device costs more than a book, but this difference in prices pays off quickly (Spreeder.com).
We live in a age when ecological problems have turned from unproven scientific hypotheses to a
disturbing reality. Vanishing of the Amazonian rainforests, massive deforestation all over the planet,
and the extinction of species of plants are only some parts of a larger ecological problem. The
industry of book printing contributes significantly to global warming, because for the paper on which
books are printed, they need to cut down trees. There are many books printed on recycled paper as
well, but their overall percentage is tiny. Therefore, by preferring an e-book over a printed one, a
customer can actively contribute to the matter of saving trees. The less print books you buy, the more
trees you help to save (Epublishers Weekly).
If you like old things, then you most likely stand for print books. However, the majority of rational
people today stand for e-books, and there exist several strong reasons for this. E-books not only help
to save the environment (since they do not need paper to be printed on), but they also take less space,
are cheaper, and allow owners to carry entire libraries in their pockets, wherever they would go. All
this proves that choosing an e-book over a printed one is a truly wise and reasonable decision.

GOOD AND BAD TEACHERS
Teaching can without any doubts be called the leading power of the societys development. It is well
known that there exist three main factors that influence the development of the personality. They are:
heredity, social encirclement and education. Usually the term education is used meaning the great
impact that parent have on the future personality of their child. But this also includes school
education, because nowadays, when parents are very busy they are the people, who teach children
what is beautiful and what is ugly, what is right and what is wrong. Through them children learn to
perceive the inner world. And the way they perceive it depends on the teachers personal
particularities that are transmitted to children through interaction and the knowledge that the teacher
offers them. A good teacher is a person who finds individual approach to every pupil, taking care
about the childs adaptation in class, increasing ones social status in class and making sure the
children learn to take into account and respect the thoughts of other people.
Therefore there is much more to a teacher than high professionalism. What makes kids hardly wait
until the lesson starts in one cases and hating the subject in others? Of course high professionalism in
the field of the taught subject is very important, but when it comes to being a bad or a good teacher
this is not the weightiest factor. A good teacher is a person who not just reproduces the knowledge he
got. Not a person that only brings up the interest to the subject. It is a person who finds individual
approach to every pupil, taking care about the childs adaptation in class, increasing ones social
status in class and making sure the children learn to take into account and respect the thoughts of
other people. It is a man or a woman that can not play the teachers role but he in the first place a
feeling human being in front of the students, a person that can show emotional response. For
example, if the teacher is professionally good enough but does not take critics from the pupils
constructively or does not explain why he thinks he is right this makes a huge gap between the
students and the teacher. And when there is no emotional contact the learning cannot be called
successful, for the students are not completely involved. When the teacher does not treat students as
people that obey him, treats them like they are equal to him and explains equally to everybody it can
really be a pointer of a good teacher. And one other very important thing is creativity.
One of the indicators of a good teacher it is his desire to teach in a new, original form, adding
something new and personal to make the learning process as exciting as it can possibly be. A bad
teacher is a person that focuses only on the information he provides not taking into account the
children or anything. It is a person that is doing its job. Such a person can be very good in the
theoretical part of his subject but he will never have students being emotionally attached to him. It is
a teacher that lets his personal mood influence on the way he treats his students, ect. That cannot
reduce awkward situations with humor either it is him in the situation or his student. Being a good
teacher is about loving children and wanting to give them only the best the teacher has inside of him.

HARVARD, PERSONAL IDENTITY: BEDROOM TOUR
If someone were to look through your bedroom, what do you hope your possessions would convey
about you?
A typical teen's room? In some respects, yes, but in many ways, my room has become an extension
of my personality, interests and values. Upon entering, one would probably notice the lack of any
music group, scantily clad female model, or indeed, any adornment at all on my walls. I prefer the
unsoiled look of clean walls, which provide a sense of calm. However, my room is far from military
precision and order; my bed lies unmade and yesterday's wardrobe gathers dust on the floor. The
visitor may consider my room tidy, but not inflexible.
While touring my room, one would surely stop to look through the room's workspace, my desk and
computer. The desktop is fairly organized, consisting of a pencil holder, desk calendar, and assorted
textbooks. The calendar is full of important dates--tests, deadlines, and of course, the rare days off
from school. Academics are one of my highest priorities, but would be useless without occasional
relaxation. Above my desk hangs a bulletin board. Similar to the calendar, it holds important pieces
of information, as well as a few personal items. A postcard, a present from my grandfather, would
likely catch one's eye. The postcard is from my homeland, and includes a famous quote by Mahatma
Gandhi. It reminds me of the country I was born in, and the ties I have to my original culture.
Directly below the postcard hang a few baby pictures of myself, mementos of a simpler time.
Alongside my desk is a computer, without which I could not survive. The slightly outdated, yet fully
competent Apple Macintosh aids with school, and, nearly any other activity I participate in. The Mac
also has a modem, connecting me to the global community linked through the Internet. I am very
interested in the Internet, and have found it a very useful source of information for everything
ranging from tomorrow's weather to buying a new car. Upon leaving my workspace, I hope my
possessions would convey that I am serious about my work, but I approach it with practicality and a
grain of salt.
On the other side of my room lies my relaxation area, commonly referred to as a bed. Strewn about
the bed are two magazines which represent my interests, MacWorld and Time. I read these
magazines daily, to keep up with current events as well as advancements in the information age. Atop
my bureau lays the latest work by Stephen King. The content may not be as deep and insightful as
Jane Austen's or Keats, but his stories serve their purpose in providing light entertainment. The bed is
unmade, a fact for which I feel no remorse. Although my mother disapproves, I consider an unmade
bed a symbol of rest and quietude. My bed may be considered utilitarian, for its uses are not limited
to sleeping upon. Some of my best moments of focus and concentration have occurred while lying on
the bed and staring at the ceiling, producing thoughts ranging from T.V. shows to pondering college
life. Few teen rooms can be considered complete without a loud stereo and an assorted collection of
tapes and C.D.'s. My room is no different--my music collection occupies two shelves. Past the
techno-rubble of the Eighties lie my current favorites, alternative rock. If a visitor were to turn on the
stereo, he would find a couple presets devoted to "homework" music, classical and light jazz. I find
that these sounds provide a sense of tranquility while trying to do homework, write reports, or
complete college essays. My bed and surrounding areas represent my non-academic, more human
interests. They personify the activities and hobbies which I truly enjoy, and provide a breather from
some of the more rigorous aspects of life.
After exiting my room, I would hope my visitor learned a few important things about me. I consider
my academics seriously, and devote much of my time (and room) to them. However, they do not
necessarily dominate my existence; loud music and Stephen King novels also play a role.
