Appendix 1
Conversion Factors, SI Steam
Properties and Useful Tables

This appendix provides tables, charts and figures

that can be useful in evaluating the generation and
use of steam. They supplement the material presented
throughout Steam and are divided into four subsections: selected conversion factors; SI versions of the
Steam Tables and graphical data; useful charts and
figures; and typical operating parameters for a 500
MW pulverized coal-fired power plant.

Conversion Formulae for Emission Rates

EPA F-Factor Method
A common method of reporting emissions is in pounds of
pollutant per million Btu of fuel input. An EPA-approved
conversion formula called the dry, oxygen based F-factor
method can be used to convert ppm by dry volume of a
pollutant to lb/106 Btu as follows:

2.59 x 109 = A constant based on the ideal gas law that

equals 106 moles per DSCF. The ideal gas law, PV=nRT,
says that 1 mole of ideal gas will occupy 385.5 ft3 at 68F
and 14.7 psia. 106 moles would, therefore, occupy 385.5 x 106
ft3 and 106 moles per DSCF = 1/385.5 x 106 = 2.59 x 109.

(lb/lb-mole), where

where: Fd = a fuel factor representing the dry standard

cubic feet (DSCF) of flue gas produced by burning a million
Btu of fuel at theoretical air (0% excess air). Standard
conditions are 68F and 14.7 psia. Fd can be calculated from
an ultimate fuel analysis, or a fuel specific default value
may be used as follows:
Fd =
