COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Principles and protocols of modern transfusion services, covering blood typing, testing for
antibodies and antigens, crossmatching, neonatal testing, and quality systems; immunology
of hematologic diseases. Lecture and laboratory.
Learning Activities:
Examinations: Examination questions and problems will be derived from material presented
in prerequisite material, the lectures, and from the assigned readings. Examinations will
be designed to be completed in two hours. All examinations are announced with dates
defined on the class schedule. In consultation with the students and at the discretion of the

Class Preparedness and Participation: Students are expected to come to each session
prepared for the lecture and laboratory of the day. This includes writing materials and any
relevant reading/ reference materials. Students are also expected to participate in class
discussions. Materials will be posted on the course Blackboard website for review prior to
each session. Accesses to the course website will be tracked.
COURSE POLICIES
Attendance
Regular and consistent attendance is required and contributes to the students grade as defined
in the grading criteria.
1. It is understood that promptness, preparation, and participation are expected for
all class sessions. Student-centered teaching and learning in a classroom environment
depend on each student and the instructor preparing for and actively participating
in classroom exchanges. Students who have not substantially completed class
assignments, including assigned readings, and/or who do not participate in classroom
discussions will earn an unexcused absence for that class session.
2. Attendance at scheduled class sessions is an essential component of course
participation and evaluation. The following situations will result in a full letter grade
deduction from the final letter grade. Letter grade deduction(s) may be cumulative:
a. Any unexcused absence from class.
b. Two (2) unexcused lateness's for or exits from class. Each additional lateness
or exit will result in an additional letter grade deduction. Lateness is defined as
appearing for class 10 minutes or more after the start of the scheduled
Session. Exit is defined as leaving a class for 10 minutes or more while it is in
progress and returning, or leaving early from a class that is in progress.
c. Disruptive, insubordinate or otherwise unprofessional behavior during class
sessions. Cell phone must remain OFF throughout the class unless specific
permission has been received from the instructor.
If it is necessary for a student to be absent/late/exit, the office of the Department of
Medical Laboratory Sciences and Biotechnology must receive notification prior to the
start of the scheduled class. The number to call is 215-503-7844; voice mail will record
your message if a staff member is not present to take your call. You must give your
name, time and date of call and your reason for the absence. Absence from class, even
if called in, must be for a legitimate reason; otherwise the absence will be counted as
unexcused. The Department reserves the right to require written verification for
absences. Students absent or late without notifying the Department are considered
unexcused.
Course Requirements
Students are expected to be prepared for each lecture and laboratory and have completed
reading assignments prior to class. Students are expected to arrive in class on time and to
maintain professional decorum in the classroom.

1. Medical Laboratory Sciences and Biotechnology students must install and maintain the
current version of ExamSoft examination software on their iPad or laptop, which will be
used during proctored examinations.
2. Students must adhere to any email instructions from the Center of Teaching and Learning
regarding updates and system maintenance of their current version of examination

c) Set the internal clock to the correct date and time (EST).
d) Upload the examination on completion or as the scheduled examination period ends
and before leaving the room.
5. Any attempt to tamper with or disable the electronic testing software security features will
be considered a violation of the Code of Conduct and will result in disciplinary action.

are utilizing to take the exam. No other electronic devices are allowed.
Makeup Examinations
If circumstances are unusual, legitimate and beyond the control of the student, then a student
may request permission to take a make-up examination. Such a request may be granted at the
discretion of the Professor. If a request is granted, then the student must take the make-up
examination prior to the final examination. The student is responsible for making arrangements
to take the exam with the instructor. Make-up tests may be in a different format, such as short
answer or essay, from the regular exam. Students should be aware that make-up tests and
individualized faculty instruction are NOT permitted after an unexcused absence.
Late Work Policy
Written, electronic or presentation assignments are due within the timeframe indicated in the
course schedule or as assigned. No credit will be given for assignments handed in late unless
the late submission is approved by the Instructor. The Instructor may deduct points for overdue
assignments at a rate of 10 points (out of 100) per day. In no case will assignments be accepted
more than one week after the due date.
Readings
Assigned readings should be completed prior to the class period in which those topics are
discussed (see Schedule below). Failure to prepare prior to attending class may lead to earning a
grade lower than a students capability warrants.
Registration Status
Students are responsible for the status of their registration at all times. The Professor will advise
that a change in status has occurred when so informed by the College/University. Only students
who are properly registered in this course can earn credit and receive a grade.
