Application
RET615 is a protection and control relay
for power transformers with two windings and generator transformer units.
The RET615 protection is available in
four standard configurations (A-B-C-D)
to satisfy the most common star-centre
grounding applications of power transformers and the relative ground protection diagrams.
Protection and control
According to the model, the RET615
series has the following protection
functions:
49 thermal overload
50 instantaneous overcurrent
51 overcurrent with inverse time
51N ground fault (calculated)
51G ground fault (measured)
87T transformer differential
87N ground fault interrupter restricted
to high or low impedance
50BF circuit-breaker failure to open
RET615 also includes basic control
functions which facilitate management
of a circuit-breaker by means of the HMI
(human-machine interface) front panel of
the relay or by means of remote controls. To prevent unauthorized access
and to protect integrity of the information, the IED is provided with a four-level
authentication system based on the role
of the user. Access control is carried
out by means of the HMI front panel,
the WEB HMI WEB Browser and the IED
PCM600 management and control too
Standard Communication
RET615 has native support for the
new IEC 61850 Standard regarding
communication between devices in the
substations. The industrial Modbus
protocol is also available, as well as the
consolidated DNP3 and IEC 60870-5103 protocols.
Implementation of the IEC61850 communication protocol for substations in
RET615 foresees both vertical communication towards a higher system,
and horizontal communication between
the various IEDs. It includes the GOOSE messaging services and remote
parameter setting in accordance with
61850-8-1.
The substation configuration language
enables use of processing tools for efficient configuration and for putting the
substation devices into operation.
In applications where precise event time
marking is required, RET615 supports
the synchronization function over Ethernet by means of the SNTP protocol or
over a separate bus using IRIG-B.
Preventive monitoring
A complete range of functions is available in RET615 for monitoring:
the unit itself (IRF Internal Relay
Failure).
opening circuit
state of circuit-breaker wear and
stress
operating mechanism spring charging
time
gas pressure of the poles
measurement of the circuit-breaker
run time
operation count
thereby collecting the fundamental information for programming suitable circuitbreaker maintenance and optimizing
management of the network.
For further information, see the Guide to
the REM615 product.
85
86
Standard Communication
RED615 has native support for the new
IEC 61850 Standard on communication
in substations.
The relay also supports the standard
industrial Modbus protocol, as well as
the consolidated DNP3 protocols and
IEC 60870-5-103.
The IEC61850 protocol is native in the
615 series and therefore, thanks to the
GOOSE messaging services, defined by
the protocol itself, point-to-point
communication over an Ethernet network which covers the entire substation
is also possible.
Supervision of communication
protection
The protection communication channel
between the line ends is continually
supervised. Should the communication
channel be interrupted or subject to
interferences, the fast-acting line differential protection and all other functions
are immediately blocked. This automatic limitation involves all the functions
which rely on continuous availability of
the protection communication channel.
Supervision of the channel includes recognition of missing or delayed signals
which carry analogue measurements or
binary data. The resetting delay can be
selected by the user.

Connectivity packages
Packages for ABBs protection and control IEDs are
available to make the COM615 configuration more efficient.
A connectivity package includes descriptions of the signal
data available in the IED and the descriptions are used to
automatically configure the communication master in the 3.2
COM615 gateway.
The following connectivity packages are available:
REF 541/3/5, REM 543/5 and RET 541/3/5

The computer configurability and functionality for COM615
stations depends on the type of communication protocol used
for communication between COM615 and the IEDs.
Design
COM615 is made up of the OPC (Ole for Process Control)
Data Access server and of the customer components. The
OPC server guarantees access of the master/client protocol
stacks to the data in the apparatus connected to the protocol.
The OPC clients serve the slave/server protocol stacks
to allow external systems to access the data available in
the OPC server. They also serve to show the data to the
embedded web server to allow external clients, connected to
the COM615 by means of LAN/WAN networks, to access the
data available in the web server.
