REF615 intrinsically supports the new
IEC 61850 Standard, with regard to
communication between devices in substations. It also supports the standard
industrial Modbus protocol, DNP3 and
IEC 60870-5-103.
The IEC61850 protocol is native in the
615 series and therefore, thanks to the
GOOSE messaging services, defined
by the protocol itself, point-to-point
communication is also possible over
an Ethernet network which covers the
entire substation.
The configuration language of the substation enables use of processing tools
for efficient configuration and activation
of the substation devices.
For applications where time is a critical
factor, REF615 supports the synchronization function over Ethernet by means
of the SNTP protocol or on a separate
bus using IRIG-B.

Pre-emptive condition monitoring

For continuous monitoring of operational availability, REM615 incorporates a
complete range of monitoring functions
for the circuit-breaker trip circuit. According to the configuration of the device
selected, the relay monitors the status
of circuit-breaker stress and wear, the
spring charging time of the circuitbreaker operating mechanism and the
gas pressure of the arcing chambers.
The relay also measures the circuitbreaker travel time and the number of
circuit-breaker operations to collect
basic information for scheduling suitable
circuit-breaker maintenance.

RED 615
Line differential protection and control
Simple configuration via software
Line differential protection and control p with phase selection, at two ends
Perfectly harmonized for industrial and utility power plants, including meshed and
not fully connected distribution networks, with or without decentralized power
generation
Wide range of incorporated protection functions
Compact design
Withdrawable unit
Compliance with Standards IEC 61850
Monitoring of operative conditions
Display with mimic diagram (option)
Application
RED615 provides high speed, longitudinal differential protection, with phase
selection for overhead line and cable
feeders in utility and industrial distribution networks. RED615 is available in
three standard configurations: a pure
and simple line differential protection
and two extended configurations with
additional protection functions. Two
RED615s interconnected over a communication link make up a completely
selective protection diagram. The protection for ring and meshed distribution
networks generally requires unit protection solutions, also applied in radial
networks containing distributed power
generation.

86

Protection and control

According to the model, the RED615
series has the following protection
functions:
46 negative sequence or current
balance
49 thermal overload
50 instantaneous overcurrent
51 overcurrent with inverse time
51N ground fault (residual)
51G ground fault (measured)
67N directional ground overcurrent
68 transformer inrush
87L cable residual current
50BF circuit-breaker not opening
79 auto-reclosing (optional)
By means of the RED615 it is also possible to control the circuit-breaker directly locally by means of open / closed
pushbuttons located on the display, or
remotely it is connected to a supervision
system.
To prevent unauthorized access and
keep integrity of the data, the relay is
provided with a user authentication
system based on a four-level role, with
individual passwords for the level of
inspector, operator, technician and administrator. Access control is carried out
by means of the HMI on the front panel.

Binary signal transfer

Binary signal transfer (BST) can be used
for transferring blocking and inter-trip
signals as well as status and position
information between the local and
remote line ends. The BST function
includes eight binary signals, transfers
among the substations by means of
protection signals via wire transferred
onto the communication link. The BST
signals go in both directions and the
signal transfer time is extremely short,
in the order of a few milliseconds. The
BST signal and the RED615 logic allow
customizable protection and control diagrams to be set up, to make electrical
plants which will be even more highly
performing in future.

Standard Communication
RED615 has native support for the new
IEC 61850 Standard on communication
in substations.
The relay also supports the standard
industrial Modbus protocol, as well as
the consolidated DNP3 protocols and
IEC 60870-5-103.
The IEC61850 protocol is native in the
615 series and therefore, thanks to the
GOOSE messaging services, defined by
the protocol itself, point-to-point
communication over an Ethernet network which covers the entire substation
is also possible.

Supervision of communication
protection
The protection communication channel
between the line ends is continually
supervised. Should the communication
channel be interrupted or subject to
interferences, the fast-acting line differential protection and all other functions
are immediately blocked. This automatic limitation involves all the functions
which rely on continuous availability of
the protection communication channel.
Supervision of the channel includes recognition of missing or delayed signals
which carry analogue measurements or
binary data. The resetting delay can be
selected by the user.

Pre-emptive condition monitoring

To guarantee operational availability of
the protection, RED615 incorporates
a range of monitoring and watchdog
functions to supervise the hardware and
software, the communication system,
the circuit-breaker trip circuit and the
CTs. Faults at CT level can cause unwarranted activation of the differential
phase protection and the phase unbalance protection.
Therefore a CT monitoring system with
rapid action immediately blocks operation of the line differential protection and
phase unbalance protection function
on detection of an erratic CT signal.
According to the configuration of the
device selected, the relay monitors the
state of circuit-breaker stress and wear,
the spring charging time of the circuitbreaker operating mechanism and the
gas pressure in the arcing chambers.
The relay also measures the circuitbreaker run time and counts the number
of circuit-breaker operations, therefore
collecting the fundamental information
for programming suitable maintenance
of the circuit-breaker.
For further information, see the Guide to
the RED615 product.

To prevent unauthorized access and
keep integrity of the data, the relay is
provided with a user authentication
system based on a four-level role, with
individual passwords for the level of
inspector, operator, technician and administrator. Access control is carried out
by means of the HMI on the front panel.
Standardized communication
REU615 intrinsically supports the new
IEC 61850 Standard, with regard to
communication between the devices
in substations. It also supports the
standard industrial Modbus protocol,
DNP3 and IEC 60870-5-103.
The IEC61850 protocol is native in the
615 series and therefore, thanks to the
GOOSE messaging services, defined
by the protocol itself, point-to-point
communication is also possible over
an Ethernet network which covers the
entire substation.

The configuration language of the substation enables use of processing tools

for efficient configuration and activation
of the substation devices.
For applications where time is a critical
factor, REU615 supports the synchronization function over Ethernet by means
of the SNTP protocol or on a separate
bus using IRIG-B.
Busbar protection by means of the
GOOSE messaging function
Implementation of the IEC 61850
Standard in REU615 also includes rapid
point-to-point communication over
the substation bus. By using GOOSE
communication, the REU615 incoming
and outgoing line relays of a substation
operate in synergy so as to make up a
stable, reliable and high speed protection system for busbars. Good quality/
price protection for busbars based on
GOOSE communication is obtained
simply by configuring the relays, and the
operative availability of the protection is
guaranteed by constant monitoring of
the protection relays and by the GOOSE
messaging function on the substation
bus. Separate physical wiring between
the switchgear units is not required for
horizontal communication.

REA
Protection system against electric arcs for distribution switchgear
Optical fibre technology
Extendable system
Universal application
Rapid trip (< 2.5 ms)
Selective protection
Automatic compensation of environmental luminosity
Self-monitoring of the components
Maintenance-free

The REA unit makes a protection

system against electric arcs inside the
switchgear.
It can be used in all types of switchgear
and does not require structural interventions.
In switchgear and electric plants, the
REA system is an effective tool for increasing overall plant reliability. In plants
which have been in service for a long
time, the REA system also allows the
switchgear residual life to be increased.
The REA system is sensitive to the light
developed by the arc. It is therefore able
to identify faults extremely rapidly and to
intervene equally rapidly. This allows the
energy developed by the electric arc to
be drastically limited and the amount of
damage to be reduced.
The REA system can be used in low and
medium voltage switchgear.

The multi-function SUE 3000 unit

allows rapid changeover between two
alternative power supply systems.
The HSTS (High Speed Transfer
System) carried out by SUE 3000, is
the ideal solution for critical industrial
processes, where a power cut - even
for just one or two cycles - can cause
production process stoppage and
considerable damage.
This system can be fully integrated
in the switchgear and is able to
changeover the power supply of the
main switchgear unit to an emergency
alternative within a few milliseconds.
Long and costly machine stoppages,
damage to production equipment and
production restarting downtimes are
thereby avoided.
The SUE 3000 HSTS allows changeover
times of 100 ms to be obtained with
traditional type circuit-breakers and of
30 ms with VM1 circuit-breakers in the
version with rapid magnetic actuator.

Sensors Electronic Instrument Transformers

Current Sensors
The current sensing is based on Rogowski coil principle, which is uniformly
wound coil over the air core immune
to any risk of saturation and linear over
the wide range of measured currents.
The output from the coil proportional
to change of current is voltage, which
needs to be integrated to produce the
output as current.

Voltage Sensors
The voltage sensing is based on
resistive or capacitive dividers with the
constant division ration of 10000:1. Due
to absence of ferro-magnetic material
the voltage sensor is immune to ferroresonance problems.
Combi Sensors
The sensor combines Current and
Voltage sensing principles in one unit.
The Rogowski coil for current sensing
is combined with resistive or capacitive
dividers in order to optimize the
functionality of product based on the
customer specification.

VT Guard
Anti-ferroresonance device for voltage measurement circuits
Low operating resistance
High resistance in the case of earth fault
Installation on DIN rail in low voltage compartment
Very limited dimensions
Applicable to all types of voltage transformer
Protection of a set of three transformers in open delta configuration
Highly reliable

VT Guard is a device studied to

eliminate the phenomenon of
ferroresonance in measurement circuits
with voltage transformers.
The device is particularly recommended
in networks with an earthing connection.
The phenomenon of ferroresonance
can take place in this type of network
for various reasons and can cause
damage, due to overload, of the voltage
transformers with the secondary winding
connected to the earthing circuit.
The VT Guard device has the peculiarity
of coming into operation when the
phenomenon appears and of remaining
inactive in the case of natural unbalance
between the system phases.

Modular prefabricated solutions

for photovoltaic fields
The substation is a fundamental component of the plant for the electrical apparatus
protection function and safety of operating personnel.
ABB uses prefabricated substations made of concrete whose metal reinforcement
makes an equipotential homogeneous grounding mesh over the entire structure
which, when then connected to the grounding system, protects the internal apparatus against atmospheric overvoltages and limits the effects of step and contact
voltages to negligible values.
The whole structure is fully factory-assembled and tested in conformity with the
CEI EN 61330 Standard. After this, it is ready to be placed on the worksite to then
be put into service. Installation activities are therefore limited to cable connections
among the various different substations and the field switchgear.
Transport of the substation does not require use of any exceptional means of
transport. Should it be necessary to move the substation to another location, the
operation is simple and rapid.
The substations are fitted with a base with the same characteristics as the housing,
whose plan has the same dimensions as the substation. The base is supplied to build a sturdy platform to rest the substation on and to allow convenient cable entry.
For this purpose, a series of pre-established knockout holes are provided in the
walls.
The ground where the substation is to be positioned must be suitably prepared by
digging and laying a layer of draining gravel to rest the base on.
The substations offered by ABB consist of a coordinated assembly of components
subjected to type tests, including:
Medium voltage switchgear
Low voltage switchboards
MV/LV transformers
Inverters
Panels and auxiliary devices
Lighting plant
Connections.
The substations only have the name of the ABB manufacturer on the nameplate,
which is the guarantee for the whole unit.
ABB has developed a full range of modular solutions for standard power photovoltaic plants, incorporating its components optimally inside complete, turnkey
systems, for each type of network configuration: radial, ring and distributed.

Substation automation systems

SD-VIEW Concept
Modular automation systems for power control and management
The SD-View Concept systems use advanced and
consolidated technological solutions to manage the
supervision, command, control, protection and automation
functions. They are normally used in management of electrical
plants in industries, infrastructures, the service sector and
utilities.
Using the SD-View Concept systems offers important
advantages, such as: improvement of the energy quality,
service continuity, reduction of consumption, advanced
diagnosis, increased safety, simplicity of management, etc.
By exploiting the modularity of SD-View Concept, it is
possible to construct flexible architectures, aimed at the
specific requirements of the plant and of the administrator,
ensuring perfect integration with field instruments (high
voltage, medium voltage and low voltage protection
apparatus, motor control switchgear, air conditioning stations,
fire-fighting stations, etc.).
Example of HSI application

Characteristics
User-friendly standard symbols; when required, the
graphics can be adapted to particular customer needs
Fully scalable: information, peripherals and computers can
be added at later stages
Completely flexible (there are no limits to the type of
applications)
Architectures can be made to measure and in respect of
the plant limits
Client-Server modes easily implemented (by placing
additional operator panels elsewhere other than in the plant
does not require software development)
Redundant architectures (immunity to apparatus faults)
Multi-language function (changeover of the operator
language without having to restart the machine)
Open towards other data importation/exportation systems,
in the standard ODBC data base formats.

Example of SD-View Panel Control application

118

The SD-View Concept systems are available in three

architectures:
SD-View Basic
Allows supervision of a small power substation (a few
concentrated switchgear) consisting of medium voltage and
low voltage apparatus, and emergency power supply systems
to be carried out.
SD-View Medium
This is the solution suitable for supervising several distributed
electrical substations (many pieces of distributed switchgear),
consisting of medium voltage, low voltage apparatus,
emergency UPS and zone switchgear.

SD-View Extend
Allows management of several large and distributed electrical
substations, each of which consists of various pieces of
high voltage, medium voltage and low voltage apparatus,
emergency UPS, zone switchgear and other apparatus. The
architecture also allows introduction of basic automation
logics.
Apart from the architectures described above, depending
on the size of the installation and orientated towards
management of power distribution, SD-View Concept can
take on other functional roles (technological, building, Motor
Control Center, etc.). Among these, we mention the two most
widely used configurations.
- SD-View Energy Profile which consists of software
characterisation, aimed at supervision and management
of power consumption (of a factory, shopping mall, hotel,
etc.). The module allows acquisition and supervision of
water, gas, steam and electricity consumption, as well as
calculation of the values and their attribution to the relative
cost centres.
- SD-View Panel Control. This is the most suitable solution
and, in view of its level of integration, the most economical
one for supervision and control of a single switchgear.
The display and control unit is mounted directly in the
medium and/or low voltage power distribution switchgear
or, on request, in an additional dedicated panel.
SD-View Panel Control is based on Basic architecture and
carries out the dual purpose of concentrating and displaying
the information coming from the microprocessor-based
and multi-function protection units of the power distribution
switchgear.
The investment in SD-View Panel Control is already amortised
in the commissioning/start-up stage, allowing a simple check
and set-up of the switchgear in the plant, and allows an
archive of significant tracings and alarms to be set up right
from the initial stages.

Example of SD-View Extend architecture

Local and Remote Monitoring and Technical Assistance

Possible by means of usual methods (Intranet, Internet/WEBRadio LAN, WAN, ADSL, GSM, GPRS, etc.)
Sending groups of alarms by means of SMS.
Connections
Connections available by means of the most widespread
communication standards (RS232, RS485, Ethernet, Fieldbus,
etc.) using all means (copper, coax, optic fibres, wireless,
etc.).
Protocols
It is able to interface with other systems using almost all
public protocols as well as many propriety market protocols.

Application
COM615 combines the characteristics and functions of
the COM605 Control and Monitoring unit and the COM610
Communication Gateway. It offers gateway functions for
mapping the signals between the protection and control IED
(Intelligent Electronic Device) in industrial or utility substations
and higher level systems, and an HMI (Human Machine
Interface) which displays the substation data and information
at users disposal.
COM615 collects the protection and control apparatus data,
as well as that of the process apparatus, using different
protocols. It uses web technology to show the data to the
various users and to transfer that data to the NCC (Network
Control Centre) or to the DCS (Distributed Control System).
The protocols supported can be freely combined in a
computer for substations, with the only limitation being the
number of hardware interfaces present in COM615.

Connectivity packages
Packages for ABBs protection and control IEDs are
available to make the COM615 configuration more efficient.
A connectivity package includes descriptions of the signal
data available in the IED and the descriptions are used to
automatically configure the communication master in the 3.2
COM615 gateway.
The following connectivity packages are available:
REF 541/3/5, REM 543/5 and RET 541/3/5
REF 542plus
REX 521
RE_610
SPACOM (Conn Pack v. 2.0 supported by SPAJ 140, SPAJ
141, SPAJ 142, SPAJ 144, SPAD 346, SACO 16D1, SACO
16D2 and SACO 64D4)
The computer configurability and functionality for COM615
stations depends on the type of communication protocol used
for communication between COM615 and the IEDs.
Design
COM615 is made up of the OPC (Ole for Process Control)
Data Access server and of the customer components. The
OPC server guarantees access of the master/client protocol
stacks to the data in the apparatus connected to the protocol.
The OPC clients serve the slave/server protocol stacks
to allow external systems to access the data available in
the OPC server. They also serve to show the data to the
embedded web server to allow external clients, connected to
the COM615 by means of LAN/WAN networks, to access the
data available in the web server.
