Electric Motor Drives Senior Engineer

This senior level engineer is responsible for all aspects of development


and design of variable speed drives for large custom commercial and
industrial equipment with applications ranging from 3 phase 300
horsepower to 1,500 horsepower motors. This is an exceptional
opportunity for many reasons including exciting new technology
development, freedom to work on lots of different projects, company
makes huge investment in technology include all new R&D facility
including new lab. Will join a unique staff of 20-25 electrical/electronic
engineers who do a broad variety of tasks (not just drives and motors).
Your work will be a combination of theoretical and practical. Your major
activities could be broke down into: 40% Design and modeling of Electric
motors (1/2 modeling, and working with vendors to design products); 40%
working with manufacturing to trouble shoot and resolve manufacturing issues
or issues from the field; 10% Administrative duties such as meetings with
other team members. Position will involve domestic and some international
travel perhaps in the 15 to 20% range.
As mentioned above will be supporting design of large custom
electromechanical that are custom designed with a cost in the 2 plus or minus
million dollars. This electrical engineering group has existed for 30+ years
and have lead their industry in many electronic and electrical technology
firsts. Historically, drives development and implementation has been one of
the significant areas of achievement and advancement of their products
worldwide. Their lab is rather unique in terms of not only having excellent
modern test equipment but having actual real world prototype units here they
can do immediate testing of controls in the real world rather than having to
wait for such testing. ALSO, THEY WILL BE MOVING INTO A NEW R&D
FACILITY INCLUDING LABS IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

Great mid Atlantic area location of Towson, MD which is a northern suburb
of Baltimore, MD. Light rail serves the area connecting to Baltimore along
with direct and good highways to reach all Baltimore areas and events. The

area with major college and professional sports of all types. Within a short
drive is the ocean and mountains along with all the East Coast has to offer.
SALARY: $100,000 to $130,000
REQUIREMENTS: BSEE with 7+ years industry experience or MSEE or Ph D
with 5 or more years industry
experience.
Expertise in design, test and service of motor-driven
electro-mechanical systems.
Experience with 3 phase
power and high horsepower motors of at least 300
hp.
In-depth knowledge with induction motor, PM
synchronous motor, and switched reluctance motor technology in terms of
design of electric motors and electrical, thermal, and vibration analysis.
In-depth knowledge of induction motor steady-state and dynamic (transient)
models; ability to implement such models in a state-of-the-art simulation tool
(e.g. Saber). Ability to extend induction motor modeling techniques to other
motor technologies.
Strong
experience to use advanced design tools such as Finite Element Analysis to
design induction motor, PM synchronous motor, switch reluctance motor, or
other motor type.
Capability to analyze induction motor

loss and efficiency and related issues. Ability to extend this knowledge to other
motor
technologies.
E
xperience of motors electro-mechanical design principles, including rotor and
stator manufacturing principles, shaft dynamics, and bearing
issues.
Good
understanding of the issues related to motor/drive interactions, such as motor

loss due to non-sinusoidal voltage
Must be either a U S Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Job Description
Role Purpose:
The successful candidate will be responsible for electrical reliability
engineering for motors drives, PLCs, and other electrical systems on the
Mount Vernon Site.
Major responsibilities include:
Responsible for improving electric motors and drives reliability through
the development and implementation of a predictive and preventive systems
maintenance process.

Execute analytical and troubleshooting skills to address electrical


systems issues. Conduct root cause analysis to improve system reliability.

Provide technical reliability direction to key stakeholders.


Develop and deploy methodology to monitor and reduce electrical
system failures.
Serve as a subject matter expert for electrical standards and practices
related to motors and drives.
Consult in the development of projects for improvements and
expansions and support equipment repairs.
Support the technical development of electrical Specialists and
Technicians.
Develop job scopes for capital and maintenance electrical related
engineering work to be executed.
Prepare project packages (print, loop sheet, specification sheets,
operating instruction, schematic, wiring diagram revisions, spare parts needs,
preventive maintenance requirements, etc) for electrical work to be executed.

Job Requirements
Education/Experience Requirements:
B.S. in Electrical Engineering
5 year industrial experience
Detailed knowledge of AC/DC motors, drives, and PLCs.
Familiarity with PC applications such as Word, Excel
Familiarity with NEC, ISA, IEEE, and other industrial/regulatory
electrical/instrumentation codes and standards

Roles and Responsibilities include:


Lead electromagnetic motor design and development for HVAC and
industrial electric motor products.
Generate electric motor designs meeting design specifications and
exceeding customer expectations.
Conduct independent motor design analysis, utilize computer analysis,
prepare reports on results.
Integrate knowledge of power electronics and the interaction with
electric motor design.
Develop, maintain and upgrade tests for design verification and
validation for electro-mechanical products.
Design and specify advanced motor test equipment, perform design
verification activities.
Complete rigorous documentation, including design specifications,
verification test plans, project schedules and change orders associated with
design changes.
Routine communication with peers and supervisors including
documentation of work, meetings, and decisions.
Interface with new product development project teams to ensure smooth
transfer of products into production.
Direct outside contract personnel as needed to support projects. Provide
work direction, coaching, and guidance to a technician or co-op.
Support compliance to Regulatory Requirements including
electromagnetic interference/electromagnetic compatibility (EMI/EMC),
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and RoHS standards.
Perform work in adherence to the Quality Management System (QMS),
including development and maintenance of documentation.

Ensure products meet requirements regulated by FDA, UL, CE and


other governing bodies.

Participate in selection of vendors and fabrication sources to assure


quality and compliance to released specifications.

Perform special projects and other duties and responsibilities as


assigned or required to exceed customer expectations.

Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):


Bachelors of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with a
Masters of Science degree preferred.
Minimum 5 years of related work experience designing brushless
permanent magnet motors, induction motor design, with some background in
IPM, SRM and other traction motors desired.
Practical understanding and applications on magnet and steel
properties.
Demonstrated understanding and application of mechanical design
knowledge of electric motors, including thermal, stress, vibration, noise and
other performance factors.
Demonstrated understanding and application of vector control, field
oriented control, direct torque control and sensor-less software algorithms for
electric motors.
Intermediate to advanced skills and abilities to use design software
including SPEED, JMAG.
Understanding of FEA and intermediate to advanced skills and abilities
to navigate simulation software such as Ansys, Maxwell, Infolytica or related
software.
Practical knowledge on power electronics interface to optimize
performance.
Ability to design and specify advanced motor test equipment preferred.
Ability to effectively communicate (oral and written) with internal and
external customers.

Ability to positively collaborate and interface with internal/external


customers related to design and project work.
Ability to summarize/analyze data, issue reports on design work
completed for project updates.
Participate in future product and strategic planning sessions.
Demonstrate initiative and results orientation supporting business goals.
Highly motivated with a passion to learn and take on new responsibilities
and initiatives.
Team work and ability to collaborate with others to achieve solutions and
results.
Ability to navigate at the intermediate level Microsoft Office Software:
