WCDMA RAN
Narrowband Interference Suppression Feature Parameter
Description

2 Overview

Overview

2.1 Background
With wide applications of UMTS 900/850 frequency bands, narrowband interference causes the
following increasingly severe problems on UMTS networks:
l

The success rate of voice service establishments decreases and the call drop rate increases.

The uplink throughput decreases.

The data transmission delay increases.

The uplink congestion is more likely to occur when there is a great amount of uplink data.

To address these problems, the Narrowband Interference Suppression feature is introduced. This
feature reduces operators' costs related to rectifying narrowband interference. This feature
applies only to UMTS 900/850 frequency bands.

2.2 Introduction
With Narrowband Interference Suppression, the NodeB scans the frequency spectrum within
the receive bandwidth of a UMTS carrier to rapidly identify stable narrowband interference (with
millisecond-level changes in frequency or power) and dynamically configures a filter stopband
for the receiver to suppress narrowband interference.

2.3 Benefits
The Narrowband Interference Suppression feature applies when the interference bandwidth is
less than 400 kHz and the narrowband interference has millisecond-level changes in power or
frequency.
Narrowband Interference Suppression provides the following benefits:
l

Efficiently reduces the uplink received total wideband power (RTWP) by 7 dB to 35 dB.

Enhances the uplink coverage capability.

Increases the uplink throughput of a cell.

Narrowband Interference Suppression Feature Parameter
Description

2 Overview

However, this feature increases the uplink processing delay by tens of milliseconds.

2.4 Architecture
This section uses two-antenna receive diversity links as an example. In the existing link structure,
narrowband interference suppression modules are added, as shown in the red block diagram in
Figure 2-1. This feature also applies when only one antenna is used to receive signals.
Figure 2-1 Narrowband Interference Suppression applied for two-antenna receive diversity

NOTE

NBI in the figure refers to narrowband interference.

After the analog to digital converter (ADC), digital down converter (DDC), and down sample
and match filter modules on the uplink receive channel perform the related processing, the
NodeB performs narrowband interference suppression. After narrowband interference
suppression is complete, the NodeB performs digit automatic gain control (DAGC) and then
baseband boards start to process receive signals.
During the narrowband interference suppression procedure, the NodeB identifies and suppresses
narrowband interference, which prolongs the uplink processing by tens of milliseconds.

3 Technical Description

Technical Description

The Narrowband Interference Suppression feature is enabled on a per cell basis when the
NBIS parameter in the ADD ULOCELL command is set to TRUE(TRUE). Figure 3-1 shows
the narrowband interference suppression procedure.
Figure 3-1 Narrowband interference suppression

The narrowband interference suppression procedure is as follows:

1.

The NodeB scans the frequency spectrum within the receive bandwidth of a UMTS carrier.

2.

Based on the scan result, the NodeB identifies the stable narrowband interference within
the receive bandwidth and the frequency and bandwidth of the narrowband interference.

3.

The NodeB automatically configures a filter stopband.

4.

The NodeB filters both wanted and interfering signals in the frequency spectrum with stable
narrowband interference.

Narrowband interference suppression requires interference identification, whose accuracy is

subject to changes in the frequency and power of interference. With Narrowband Interference

3 Technical Description

Suppression, the NodeB identifies only narrowband interference whose frequency and power
change stably by milliseconds.
Enabling Narrowband Interference Suppression can suppress the interference that has the
following characteristics:
l

The total interference bandwidth is less than 400 kHz.

The number of interference occurrences is 2 or less.

The interference power is 7 dB to 35 dB higher than the noise floor of the NodeB. Such
interference increases the RTWP.

The interference frequency is stable within 40 ms, and the frequency deviation is less than
10 kHz/10 ms. The interference power is stable within 40 ms if no channel attenuation
occurs.

Narrowband Interference Suppression can also suppress other interference to a certain extent.
A sector served by a radio frequency (RF) module can perform narrowband interference
suppression for only one carrier.

5 Network Impact

Network Impact

System Capacity
When narrowband interference exists within the receive bandwidth of a carrier, enabling
Narrowband Interference Suppression improves the system capacity as follows:
l

Reduces the uplink RTWP by 7 dB to 35 dB.

Enhances the uplink coverage capability.

Increases the uplink capacity.

The benefits provided by this feature are significant when the narrowband interference is strong
and the interference bandwidth is small.
When no narrowband interference exists, the narrowband interference suppression algorithm
itself has no negative impact on system capability. However, the suppression increases the uplink
processing delay and may have certain negative impacts on the uplink demodulation function
of some attenuated channels. Therefore, enabling this feature may decrease the uplink capacity
by a maximum of 10% when no narrowband interference exists.
The performance of this feature is subject to service types, narrowband interference strength,
and narrowband interference bandwidth. Therefore, the performance of this feature cannot be
quantified but depends on live network environments.

Network Performance
When narrowband interference exists within the receive bandwidth of a carrier, enabling
Narrowband Interference Suppression increases the access success rate and decreases the call
drop rate without impacting other KPIs.
When no narrowband interference exists, enabling Narrowband Interference Suppression
decreases the performance of low-rate services by a maximum of 0.4 dB and high-rate services
by a maximum of 1.8 dB.

Description

6 Engineering Guidelines

Engineering Guidelines

6.1 When to Use

Enable the Narrowband Interference Suppression feature when narrowband interference has the
following characteristics:
l

The interference duration is longer than 40 ms.

The interference bandwidth is less than 400 kHz.

The interference strength ranges from 7 dB to 35 dB.

Enabling this feature increases the uplink processing delay of a cell and slightly affects the uplink
demodulation function. This feature is recommended for networks where narrowband
interference exists during busy hours, not for networks where there is only instantaneous
interference, which does not have any significant impact on the average RTWP.
The additional delay may decrease the success rate of softer combination between cells enabled
with this feature and cells without this feature. Therefore, it is recommended that cells using the
same UARFCN under the same NodeB be enabled with this feature.

6.2 Required Information

Monitor the value of the VS.MinRTWP counter to determine whether this feature can be enabled
in a cell.
For a UMTS 900 cell, collect the values of the VS.MinRTWP counters in one day. Check whether
the values exceed -102 dBm when the cell traffic is low.
l

If yes, use the FFT frequency spectrum scanning function on the NodeB LMT or frequency
domain detection function provided by other devices to check whether wideband or
narrowband interference exists. If narrowband interference exists mostly when the traffic
is high, enable Narrowband Interference Suppression.

If no, no interference exists in the cell.

6.4.3 Precautions
Enabling Narrowband Interference Suppression increases the uplink processing delay. If this
feature is enabled when logical cells exist, call drops caused by uplink out-of-synchronization
may occur for UEs that have accessed the network before this feature is enabled. However, they
will not occur for UEs that access the network after this feature is enabled. Therefore, activate
or deactivate this feature during off-peak hours.
Due to the limitation of hardware specifications, this feature cannot be enabled for more than
one cell in a sector.
