In this second course in the Electronics pathway, you will learn about more
advanced circuits and be introduced to AC. The first course dealt with safety, the
basics of electricity, required mathematics, and basic DC circuits. Building on that,
we will continue into AC circuits, circuit applications, components, advanced circuit
design, and a little bit of trigonometry. So far your primary tools have been the
multimeter and soldering iron. We will add the oscilloscope to that list to create AC
wave shapes.
NIDA will continue to be a key learning tool, but you will also receive hands-on
instruction to build and troubleshoot circuits on breadboards and printed circuit
boards. You will begin to design and create your own circuits and customize
existing circuits to fit your needs and creative applications. You will also look into
different areas of electronics such as transistors and communication as well as the
industry as a whole.

Identify advanced components, tools, and design concepts

Demonstrate safe work habits and equipment uses
Collect and record data for analysis and troubleshooting
Identify and explore career paths
Develop employability skills
Build a radio!
Build a power supply!!
Build something unique!!!

Materials:
Every day you will need to bring a notebook, paper, and a pen or pencil. Not just for
taking notes, but for recording data, drawing circuits, solving problems, and for a
few doodles in the margins. A calculator with the capacity to invert numbers (1/x
or x-1) such as a TI-30 or better; preferably one to handle the occasional trig
functions.
The following materials will be used over this course and subsequent electronic
courses:

Multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators, and frequency counters

Breadboards
Wire, higher gauge (thinner, smaller diameter)
Wire cutters and strippers
Solder and a soldering iron
Solder suckers and desoldering wire/wick
Heat sinks, heat shrinks, and heat guns
Other shop tools (Screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, hammers, etc.)

Behavior and expectations:

Students will treat each other with respect both as a person and with regard to class
time. Be on time and prepared for class. Be mindful of the language and actions
you use in regards to others. Respect the property and space of others, they are
not yours. You should be using skills and displaying characteristics that
employers look for.
Students will demonstrate safe habits when using and when around the use of tools
and equipment. A safety contract will be signed before a student can use certain
equipment. Make sure you are familiar and comfortable with tools before using
them.
