Course Objective
This course will provide delegates with the fundamentals of vibration theory as applied to rotating
machinery together with an in-depth view on the
techniques necessary for solving basic out-of-balance
problems.
Course Structure
The course is designed to provide delegates with an
understanding of the principles of rotating-machinery
vibration theory by means of a combination of
theoretical and practical training that is provided
in lecture rooms equipped with state-of-the-art
vibration analysis and purpose-built simulation test
equipment.
Course Prerequisites
The delegate should have a reasonable understanding
of mechanical engineering and rotating machinery.

Course Topics
Vibration Measurement Types: a basic guide to
acceleration, velocity and displacement, peak-topeak, peak and RMS measurements. When they
should be used and what limitations they have
Vibration Sensors: an overview of the different
types of vibration transducer, how they are
constructed, how they work and what limitations
they have
Phase Measurements: what is phase measurement and how is it used in diagnosing vibrationrelated faults. How can we measure it and what
special equipment is necessary
Vibration Plots/Graphs: a look at the different
ways in which vibration data is presented. Polar
plots, Bode plots, full- and half-spectrum and
cascade and waterfall spectrum plots
Resonance/Critical Speed: a discussion about
resonance, natural frequency and critical speed
and what it means to our vibration problem
Single-Plane Balancing: practical demonstrations
and exercises in single-plane balancing with and
without a phase marker
Taking Handheld Readings: a discussion about
the pitfalls in taking handheld readings and
practical demonstrations and exercises in taking
a meaningful measurement
FFT Analysis/Interpreting Spectrum Data:
what is FFT analysis and how does it work.
How can we use it in machinery diagnostics and
how do we interpret the data
Troubleshooting Vibration Problems:
a presentation/discussion about particular faults,
how to recognize them and what remedial action
to take in each case
Vibration Monitoring Equipment Setup:
an explanation of the setup of the Bently Nevada
3500 monitoring rack, the Bently Nevada TK81
and TK83 meters and the Bently Nevada Snapshot
