When the Sheeleys moved to the area a few years ago, Alison discovered the JCC and it quickly became a home away
from home for the entire family. The girls, Olivia and Sienna, both attend The Leonard and Syril Rubin Nursery School at the
JCC, love being Neil Klatskin Day Campers, and enjoy dance and athletics after school classes. While the girls are busy with
their activities, Alison works out in the gym, trains with one of the JCCs fantastic personal trainers and takes barre and adult
ballet classes. She has also become a real part of the extended JCC family by volunteering at JCC events, participating on
committees and taking an active role in the nursery schools parent teacher organization. Brett plays racquetball at the J on
a regular basis and has joined the JCCs adult mens basketball league. For Alison, being a JCC member is a no-brainer, as she
says: I have so many friends in the city who are starting families and are reluctant to move and when they ask my advice,
what do I tell them? I tell them to move here and join the JCC.

It gives me some perspective on just how unusual this area is. In most
places, going out to a restaurant for a kosher meal takes high level
logistical planning. Here, it takes a last minute decision. Here, we can
decide if we want fancy or casual, fast or slow food. Everyplace else, you
just take what you can get.
Just as thats true of food, its true of all the other components of Jewish
life. We have so very many options when it comes to synagogues, day and
afternoon schools, and just about everything else.

JEWISHFEDERATION
Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey

Paramus, New Jersey 07652
Tel.: (201) 820-3900

E-mail: welcome@jfnnj.org
Federation is a convener, a connector,
a facilitator, and a rallying point for
action. It focuses on the future and
collaborates with its beneficiary agencies
and many other institutions to create a
stronger, more vibrant Jewish community
in northern New Jersey, in Israel, and
around the world wherever Jews live.
Jewish Federation of Northern New
Jersey provides a safety net for those
who are in need. As an example, it
supports social service programs care
management, nursing services, kosher
nutrition, hunger relief, and social
isolation reduction for all seniors,
including aging Holocaust survivors
through its network of beneficiary
agencies. It builds a strong Jewish
community, by serving as a catalyst for
educational improvement and Jewish
continuity. Federation provides a forum
for synagogue leaders from area
congregations to work together to
address challenges and opportunities and
to achieve meaningful and sustainable
change. It promotes Jewish early
childhood and adult Jewish learning, and
works with day and synagogue-based
religious schools.
Federation deepens connections with
Israel by providing educational
programming to schools and institutions
in the community. It has developed a
formal relationship with Nahariya, its
sister city in Israel. Federation is a
supporter of Taglit-Birthright Israel which
offers young Jews, ages 18-26, a once-ina-lifetime gift of a free trip to Israel.
Federation has sent hundreds of students
and young professionals from northern
New Jersey to Israel to enhance Jewish
identity and build a stronger connection
to Israel. Federations public policy and
advocacy arm provides a forum for
discussion and action on issues of
concern to the Jewish community at
levels from international to local.
Federation works to promote mutual
understanding and harmonious relations
among northern New Jerseys racial,
religious, civic and ethnic groups. It
offers unique volunteer opportunities,
such as its annual Mitzvah Day and
March Mega Food Drive which bring
together thousands to perform mitzvot
(good deeds), throughout the
community.

The Fair Lawn Jewish Center/
Congregation Bnai Israel is a welcoming
egalitarian, conservative congregation
with 400 member families. Spiritually
uplifting, educationally inspiring and
socially dynamic, the FLJC creates
community and connection through a
broad variety of opportunities, from
worship to social action to social
experiences. Jewish worship takes place
every day of the year at the FLJC, with
Shabbat services including junior
congregation. Led by our vibrant and
talented Cantor, all of our services have
lay participation. Our egalitarian
philosophy means that women and men
are equal partners in our religious
services. Daily morning and evening
minyans provide comradery for all, along
with comfort for our mourners. Our
monthly 747 morning minyan for teens
has gained national recognition.
Education for all ages is a critical
component at the FLJC. The Rabbi offers
thought-provoking sermons and his
weekly classes on the Talmud and Torah
provide insights along with lively
discussion. Our Families with Young
Children Committee plans holiday
celebrations, and family programs for our
members and the larger Jewish
Community. Our outstanding Religious
School, Howard and Joshua Herman
Education Center, begins in the
kindergarten and continues beyond
bar/bat mitzvah with parent education
and special programs an integral part of
the curriculum. The religious school
meets two days a week, Sunday morning
and Tuesday afternoon. The Center is
also known for its numerous book
groups.
Our auxiliary organizations include
Sisterhood and Mens Progress Club,
both of which sponsor many fun and
exciting programs and cultural events.
The Centers Social Action Committee
supports an ever-growing list of projects
that make a critical difference in our
community and beyond, including
visiting the home-bound sick, food and
clothing drives. Our ESP, Emergency
Food Packages helps those receiving
Meals on Wheels during winter months.
Our Shofar Corps brings teenagers to the
homes of elderly shut-ins during the Fall
holidays so they can hear the sound of

KERUV (pronounced Kay-roov) in
Hebrew means to draw near, to
approach. This program was developed
to help couples, parents, extended
families and synagogues deal with issues
regarding interfaith relationships.
The KERUV committee of Temple
Emanuel of the Pascack Valley actively
engages families in discussions and
activities on topics on Interfaith
relationships on a regular basis. Our
facilitator led sessions often take place in
the homes of our members. Many of
these discussions transcend interfaith
relations. We, as congregants in the
Temple Emanuel family, often find
ourselves faced with these issues in a
traditional or interfaith situation. The
program addresses relationships,
marriage, grand-parenting, death, Jewish
cooking, and how to respectfully and
lovingly share our heritage within our
traditional, intermarried and non-Jewish
family members. We celebrate ourselves,
our families, our children, our
grandchildren while answering why and
how.

Our preschool offers programs for ages
18 months 5 years old with a number
of options. Our comprehensive and
developmentally appropriate program is
designed to promote each childs
intellectual, social, physical, and
emotional growth. All games and
activities are skill-based and goaloriented, so that the children grow with
everything they do. The classroom is a
community in which Jewish values are
modeled and reinforced and Hebrew
language is introduced through songs,
games, and simple conversation. The
curriculum combines structured and
unstructured activities that encourage
young children's most important work:
creative play. Every day is filled with art,
music, stories, language, Jewish living,
and hands-on exploration. Our program
infuses our children with a love for
Judaism as well as respect and
admiration for our heritage.

For more than 65 years, Yavneh
Academy a modern Orthodox yeshiva
day school, has provided students with a
superior educational foundation built on
Torah Shebictav, Torah Shebal Peh,
mitzvot, middot, Ivrit, Eretz Yisrael,
Medinat Yisrael and excellence in all
Judaic and general studies. We believe
that all future learning is dependent
upon the experience of youth. To
achieve this goal we ignite excitement in
our children by incorporating creative,
innovative and interactive curricula and
projects into the daily educational
experience. Yavneh faculty are
concerned with the whole child and
stretch the curiosity of the student body
so that our children grow intellectually,
socially, and emotionally. Computer
technology, multimedia programs,
informal educational activities, cultural
experiences and field trips all enhance
the Yavneh philosophy. Our educational
program is achieved through small
student-teacher ratios and the
involvement of parents at each step in
the process. We measure our success by
the thousands of Yavneh graduates who
are equipped with a strong background
of academic skills, middot, a love of
learning, and readiness to meet the
challenges of adolescence and beyond.

TRAVEL
Israel Tourist Office
A G U I D E TO
S H E M I N I A T Z E R E T Shemini Atzeret is
Hebrew for eighth-day convocation, and is
the name given to the eighth day of Sukkot. It
represents a time of reflection on the holy
days of Sukkot, as well as a time when a
special prayer for rain in the year to come is
recited.
S I M C H A T T O R A H Simchat Torah
rejoicing in the law is celebrated
immediately after Sukkot and is one of the
most festive of the Jewish holidays.
On this day, the final portion of
Deuteronomy (the fifth book of the
Torah) is read, and the reading of
Genesis (the first book) is then
begun. This signifies that the Torah is
seamless with no beginning and no end.
The Torah scrolls are dressed in velvet, and
adorned with silver and jewelry. People carry
them in their arms as they dance around the
synagogue celebrating. The Simchat Torah
festivities and rituals represent a symbolic
marriage of the Jewish people to the Torah.
C H A N U K A H In Hebrew, Chanukah means
dedication. This Festival of Lights takes
place in the month of Kislev on the
Jewish calendar (which most often
falls during the month of December
on the secular calendar, although it
can start as early as November). It
symbolizes the recapturing of the Temple
during the days of the Maccabees and the
miracle of the oil that burned for eight days.
It also commemorates the first struggle in
recorded history of religious freedom and
personal liberty. On each of the eight nights
of Chanukah, individuals light the chanukiah
(a nine-candled menorah), recite special
prayers, and often play dreidel and sing
songs. Chanukah is also a time for eating oilbased foods such as latkes (potato pancakes)
and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts), and for
giving gelt (money).
T U B S H E V A T Tu BShevat is the New
Year of the Trees! Originally an agricultural
festival, it marks the emergence of spring. In
modern Israel, it has become a national
holiday a tree-planting festival. Tu BShevat
usually occurs in the month of February, and
is also known as the Jewish Arbor Day.
People eat fruits and nuts, particularly
something from Israel or new for the season.
Some even hold a seder for family and friends
incorporating seasonal fruits and vegetables.
P U R I M Purim recalls Hamans plot to
exterminate the Jews of Persia and
celebrates the story of Queen
Esther, who intervened, along
with her cousin Mordechai, to save
her people. On Purim, the Megillah, or Scroll
of Esther, is read. Every time the name
Haman is mentioned, people stamp their feet
and twirl noisemakers (groggers) to blot out
his name. Children dress up in costumes, and
hamantashen special three-cornered
cookies that are supposed to resemble
Hamars hat or ear are eaten. It is also
customary to send gifts of food (shalach
