1. INTRODUCTION

Bilge system is system that use to drain water in the void compartments when ship in
the flooding condition. Because of that bilge well shall put in every void space below
the sea level. The bilge pump can be couple with other pump such as ballast pump,
stand by sea water cooling pump and general service pump.

2. OBJECTIVES
1. To knowing the diameter of main and branch bilges pipes.
2. To calculating the capacity of Bilge Pump.
3. To determine the volume of bilge well.
4. To design the system on ship layout

entry into the tank.
Bilge suctions are to be so arranged as
not to impede the cleaning of bilges
and bilge wells. They are to be fitted
with easily detachable, corrosionresistance strums.
Emergency bilge suctions are to be
arranged such that they are accessible,
with free flow at a suitable distance
from the tank or the ship bottom
For the size and design of bilge wells
see GL Rules for Hull Structure (I-1-1)
Section 27 ,C.4.1

Remark

Bilge wells are to have a capacity of

more than 0.2 m3. Small holds may
have smaller bilge wells. For the use of
manhole covers or hinged covers for
the access to the bilge suction
Bilge wells shall be located and
monitored in such way that the
accumulation of liquid is detected at
normal angles of trim and heel, and
shall be large enough to accommodate
easily the normal drainage during the
unattended period.
Valves in connection pipes between the
bilge and seawater and ballast water
system, as well as between the bilge
connections of different compartments,
are to be so arranged that even in the
event
of
faulty
operation
or
intermediate positions of the valves,
penetration of seawater through the
bilge system will be safely prevented
Bilge discharge pipes are to be fitted
with shut-off valves at the ships shell.

PREFACE
This document explain about the detail calculation of Bilge System. There are 3 main point
calculation in this documement such as bilge pipe diameter, pump spesification, and
volume of bigle well.

A. BILGE SYSTEM
Bilge system is system that use to drain water in the void compartement when ship
in the flooding condition. Because of that bilge well shall put in every void space
below the sea level. The bilge pump can be couple with other pump such as ballast
pump, stand by sea water cooling pump and general service pump.

BILGE PIPE DIAMETER CALCULATION

1.1 MAIN BILGE PIPE
The diameter of the main bilge pipe in the engine rooms of tankers and bulk
cargo/oil is calculated using the formula :
dH

3 .0

where,
dH

2.2 HEAD PUMP

To calculate the head total of the pump we need to know the head static, head
pressure , head velocity and head loss. The total head loss equation is
H

hs + hp + hv + hts + htd

Where
H

= minimum head pump [m]

hs

= head static [m]

hp

= head pressure[m]

hts

= total head loss suction side [m]

htd

= total head loss discharge side [m]

Below will be explain the detail calculation of head pump

Head Static
head static pump is calculated from pump inlet till the end of discharge, in
this case, its calculated till of top deck
hs

= 7.95 m

Head Pressure
hp

Head Velocity
Head Velocity (Hv) is difference velocity of fluid between in suction line in
suction and discharge of pump. we can make assumption not difference
between suction and discharge about flow velocity.
