K24 TV maligning Muslims-SUPKEM

T

he Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) described

the Kenya Emergence Response Unit (KERU) drama series
aired on K24 television as done in bad taste and was deliberately produced to depict Islam and Muslims negatively.
The council secretary general Adan Wachu also faulted Mediamax
Network, the company which owns the television station for claiming that the drama series was produced with the cooperation of the
council. Wachu expressly denied SUPKEMs participation saying
that at no time did the National Executive Board of Supkem gave
even a tacit approval to the television series. I am shocked beyond comprehension by the statement of Mediamax that the documentary on terrorism was discussed, developed and run on the
express authority and knowledge and participation of SUPKEM
and other Muslims institutions and personalities. I wish to distance
SUPKEM'S involvement and the alleged tacit approval to have it
run by the SUPKEM as alleged, he said.
In response to the complaint from Jamia Mosque Committee
against the series, the Mediamax CEO Ian Fernandes claimed

that the production of the drama series was as a result of engagement with key stakeholders who included SUPKEM and Imams.
Defending the production, the CEO said the constant reference to
Islam and Muslims were not made to show that that faith was the
driver of terrorism but to erase from the mindset of non-Muslims
the negative perspective that exists regarding Muslims.
Wachu however, accused Mediamax of misusing the name of
SUPKEM to malign Muslims. We detest to the highest level the
manner in which the name of SUPKEM is being misused and misrepresented in this type and exercise of this nature, he said. To
our understanding the documentary and the character portrays
both Islam and Muslims in bad taste. It is a shame, he added.
In the complaint raised against the production of the series which
airs every Monday on K24 television, the Jamia Mosque Committee secretary general Abdulbary Hamid criticized the production
saying that it was deliberately made to portray Muslims as the
drivers of terrorism while Islam is consistently depicted as a faith

Releasing the results at Shimo LaTewa
High School in Mombasa, education cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i revealed that
only 141 candidates managed to score a
mean grade of A plain in the 2016 Kenya
Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)
a drop from 2,636 candidates who attained
the grade in 2015.
Dr Matiangi captured the extent of the
drop in performance when he stated that
some schools that previously managed
196 straight As could hardly manage 15
this year.
Last year, schools which produced 196
straight As could not produce 15, he noted.
The CS had even more shocking news
that only 88,928 candidates attained C

managed the grades of C plus and above
in 2015 examination.
Last year, a total of total of 577, 253 candidates sat for the examination in 9,158 centres across the country.

is told that his son is a terrorist after embracing Islam.
Further, many of the scenes in series show
terrorists dressed as Muslims who constantly cite to Islamic terminologies which
in most instances are mispronounced.
In a complaint note to the Media Council of
Kenya, Jamia Mosque called for ending the
culture of using the media to depict Muslim
as the drivers of terrorism saying that the
narrative was helping to fuel Islamaphobia
and breeding hatred towards Muslims.
The drama series which according to its
producers is aimed at ostensibly creating
awareness about the dangers of terrorism
was originally intended to be aired on the
state broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting

became clear that the narrative clearly depicted Islam and Muslims in bad light.

Benefits and Virtues of Salawat

By Muhammad ibn Abd Al-Quddus

IN ISLAM, PERFORMING Salah is the
most important mandatory act after the
testimony of faith. The Prophet salallahu
alayhi wa sallam said, The head of the
matter is Islam; its pillar is the Salah
(Tirmidhi)
It is the last thing the Prophet recommended to his Ummah before he died,
saying, Salah, Salah and what your right
hands possessed. (Ab Dwd)
An act of this weight and status is really
worthy of getting all the attention and
care of Muslims because the Salah
which Allah accepts and rewards plentifully is the Salah whose conditions, and
basic elements are perfected.
But how can one carry out the Salah in
the correct manner? One can attain that
goal by learning the way the Prophet
practiced it by knowing its prerequisites,
essentials and Sunnah acts. Because
botching Salah is a harmful act that results in the forfeiture of the reward, either
completely or partially. The Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam warned us, Truly,
a man leaves, and none of his Salah has
been recorded for him except a tenth of
it, a ninth of it, eighth of it, seventh of it,
sixth of it, fifth of it, fourth of it, third of it,
a half of it. (Ab Dwd)
In the following paragraphs, a detailed
description of the prerequisites (shurt)
and essentials (arkn) of Salah is presented.
Prerequisites vs. Essentials of Salah
There is a difference between the terms
prerequisite and essential. The former
is an object, quality, or condition that is
required in order for something else to
happenand if it is missing, the thing
is invalid and unfulfilled. For instance,
wuhu is a prerequisite for Salah, as per
the adth, The Salah of one without
purification is void (Ab Dwd and
Tirmidhi).
While essential is the property or characteristic of something that makes it what
it isand if it is missing the thing is null
and void. For instance, recitation of Srat
Al-Ftia in each and every rakah is an
essential for Salah because the Prophet
said, Anyone who does not recite the
Opening of the Book [Srat Al-Ftiah] in
ones Salah is not credited with observing it. (Bukhri)
The scholars concur that a willful violation of any essential or prerequisite in
Salah invalidates it. However, when an
essential act is unintentionally omitted,
two things are required:
Performing the missing act
Making sujdalsahw (remedial prostration):
1. Before taslm if it is on account of an
omission or due to both an omission and
an addition, OR:
2. After taslm if the cause is only an addition. However, if the mistake is one of
involuntary additionsuch as an extra
bowing, it is atonable by sujd al-sahw.

The prerequisites (shurt) of salah

It is obligatory on the one who wishes to
perform Salah to make sure that he/she
satisfies the following conditions before
he enters into it:
Islam: One must be a Muslim in order
for him/her to obtain the rewards of Islamic acts of worship.
Intention (niyya). The Prophet said,
Verily all actions are [accounted] only by
intentions. (Bukhri and Muslim)
Scholars of all four madhhib are unanimous that intention takes place in the
heart and that it should not be uttered by
the tongue. The Prophet never instructed
us to audibly or inaudibly state intentions
for any act of worship, and the Companions did not do this either.
Sanity and Maturity: One must be able
to know and appreciate what he/she is
doing. Sanity is mentioned in the adth
in which the Prophet said, The pen
(which records ones deeds) is raised
from the account of a person in the following three situations: a sleeper until he
awakes, a child until he matures (reaches age of puberty) and the insane until he
regains sanity. (Ab Dwd)
One must also have a clear mind at the
time of making the Salah. Allah says,
O believers! do not approach Salah in a
stuporuntil you know what you are uttering. [Srat Al-Nis, 4:43]
In addition, the Prophet also said, If one
feels drowsy while making Salah, one
should go to sleep until his slumber is
over, because if one makes Salah while
drowsy one would not know whether he
is asking for forgiveness or for a bad
thing for himself. (Bukhri)
Knowing the proper time for Salah.
Allah says,Salah has been enjoined on
the believers at prescribed times. [Srat
Al-Nis, 4:103] The Prophet recounted,
Jibrl led me in Salah at the Kaabah.
He led me in the early afternoon Salah
(Dhuhr) when the sun had passed the
meridian to the extent of the throng of a
sandal; he led me in the mid-afternoon
Salah (Asr) when the shadow of a thing
was as long as itself; he led me in the
sundown Salah (Maghrib) when the one
who fasts breaks the fast; he led me in
the night Salah (Isha) when the twilight
(redness from the horizon at sunset) disappears; he led me in the dawn Salah
(Fajr) when food and drink becomes forbidden for the faster.
On the following day, he led me in the
early afternoon Salah (Dhuhr) when the
shadow of a thing was as long as itself;
he led me in the mid-afternoon Salah
(Asr) when the shadow of a thing was
twice as long as itself; he led me in the
sundown Salah (Maghrib) when the one
who fasts breaks the fast; he led me in
the night Salah (Isha) when the first half
of the night had passed; he led me in the
dawn Salah (Fajr) when there was a fair
amount of daylight. Then turning to me
Jibrl said, Muhammad, this is the time

observed by the prophets before you and the

difference in time for each Salah we made on
both days is anywhere between the two times.
(AbDwd)
Purification (ahra): One must make sure
that the following three things are clear from all
kinds of impurity before he starts the Salah:(A)
Body: If one is not in the necessary state of
purification then one must attain it for Allah
says, O believers, when you establish Salah
wash your (hands and) faces (mouth and nose
are inclusive) and your hands to the elbows,
wipe your heads (ears are inclusive), and wash
your feet to the ankles. [Srat Al-Midah, 5:6]
Also the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam
said,When you stand for Salah perfect your
ablution. (Bukhri and Ab Dwd)and also,
Salah is not accepted from anyone who has
nullified his/her ablution until she/he regains
another one nor is charity accepted from stolen property. (Bukhri and Muslim)
Post-Natal bleeding (nifs) menstrual bleeding
(hayh): Both postnatal bleeding and menstrual bleeding waives Salah from a woman.
(B) Clothes: if the clothes are contaminated
with impurities, one should wash them for Allah
says, Purify your garments, [Srat Al-Muddaththir, 74:4]
and the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam
said, If menstrual blood is on ones clothes,
she must wash it out and then make Salah.
(Bukhri)
(C) Place: If the ground is filthy one can pour
water over the impurity: A Bedouin entered the
masjid and urinated. The people grabbed him
and the Prophet ordered his release, told them
to pour a tumbler of water over the soiled area,
and said, You have been sent to make things
easy and not make them difficult. (Bukhri)
It is prohibited to offer Salah in graveyards
(Muslim), camel pens (Ab Dwd), churches
and synagogues with images (Bukhri), public
baths/bathrooms and dunghills (Ab Dwd),
the roof of the Kaabah, slaughterhouses, and
the middle of the road.
(6) Covering the private parts (satr al-awra):
Allah says, O Children of Adam! Put on your
adornment (by wearing proper clothing/ concealing the awra) for every time/place of masjid
(Salah). [Srat Al-Arf, 7:31]
The awra for a man outside of Salah is from his
navel to his knees. (Bukhri and Ab Dwd).
The awra of a woman (for Salah purposes) is
her entire body except her face and hands.
(7) Facing the Qibla (istiqbl al-qiblah): Allah says, Turn your face in the direction of AlMasjid Al-Haram, and wherever you are, turn
your faces (in Salah) in that direction. [Srat
Al-Baqarah, 2:144]
The Prophet said, When you stand for Salah,
face the qibla, make takbr, utter glorification
and praise for Allah, recite the Mother of the
Book [Srat Al-Fatiah]" (Bukhri and Ab
Dwd)
There are many ways to decide the qibla. And
when one is ignorant of the right direction, one
should inquire and strive to determine its exact
or approximate direction, and in case neither of
the two is possible, one should follow his best
judgment.

Is Your Home an Islamic Home?

Dr. Aisha Hamdan

Allh says: And Allh has made for you in

your homes a place of rest [An-Nal: 80]
This may seem like an unusual question
and your automatic response may be Why,
of course my home is an Islmic Home!!
My family is Muslim and that makes our
home a Muslim one!! Go through this short
checklist to determine if your response
should really be in the affirmative.
I Have Chosen a Good Spouse
There are several aadth that highlight the
importance of choosing a righteous and pious spouse. The wisdom of this is obvious:
a pious spouse is more likely to bring happiness and contentment to the other spouse
and the couple together will be more able
to build a righteous family and home life.
This is the foundation of the home.
I Help Guide My Spouse
This begins with each spouse fulfilling the
duties and responsibilities of their roles
and treating each other with kindness and
compassion. It then goes beyond this to
include guidance in other spiritual matters
such as striving to strengthen imn; paying attention to worship and correcting it
when needed; encouraging the reading of
Qurn, praying at night, giving charity, and
reading books on Islm; helping to choose
pious friends; enjoining goodness and forbidding evil. Imn is something that may
increase or decrease so it is necessary to
continually focus on increasing our own
and that of our spouse.
Our Home is a Place for Remembrance
of Allh
Remembrance can be in many forms: with
the heart, with the tongue, through prayer,
recitation of Qurn, memorizing adhkr
and using them, discussing Islamic is-

there will remain over you a guardian from

Allh, and satan will not come near you until morning. [Bukhari]
Teaching and Learning are Ongoing Activities in Our Home
This is primarily the responsibility of the
head of the household who must ensure
that he is guiding his family to the correct
path, enjoining them to do good, and forbidding them from evil. Attaining knowledge is
incumbent upon all members of the family
and is the basis upon which imn will flourish. A study circle should be established in
the home that covers the various areas in
Islm and from which all family members
will benefit. Children should especially be
encouraged to participate since this will
establish a pattern for them that will be carried throughout their lifetimes.
We Have an Islamic Library in Our Home
This may include such things as books,
cassette tapes, and CDs. It is important
to choose accurate and reliable material
that will benefit the members of the family.
There should be a variety of materials to
cover all age levels and language needs
of those in the home. Arabic material is
definitely a must since everyone in the
family should either know or be learning
to read the language of the Qurn. Books
should cover a variety of topics, be properly organized, and be easily accessible.
Audiotapes and CDs may include Qurn
recitation, lectures, khubahs, tapes for
children containing supplications, reminders of Islamic manners, and nashds (religious songs with no musical instruments).
Family members should encourage one
another to use these materials on a regular basis, and should be shared with other

are things that should occur on a consistent basis so that the angels will come to
the home and bring Allhs blessings. The

The example of a home in which Allh is
remembered and the example of a home
in which Allh is not remembered, is like
comparing the living and the dead.[ ahih
al-Jaami]
Our Home is a Place of Worship
This means that alah is established within the home at its required time and that
members of the family pray in congregation when several are present. The family may also designate a specific area
for prayer and maintain its uniqueness
and cleanliness. For women, it is better
to pray each prayer within the home. For
men, it is recommended to pray voluntary
prayers at home after having prayed obligatory prayers in the masjid. The Prophet
(allhu alayhi wasalam) said: The voluntary prayer in the home is better than the
voluntary prayer with the people. It is like
the obligatory prayer of the man in congregation being better than praying the obligatory by himself. [Muslim] This is to ensure
that homes are made places of worship
just as the masajids.
We Regularly read Surah Al-Baqarah
and AyatulKursi to Keep Satan Away
The Messenger of Allh (allhu alayhiwasalam) said: Recite Surah Al Baqarah
in your houses, for the satan does not
enter a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah
is recited. [Sahih al Jaami] He also said:

Muslim families who may be in need of them.
We Try to Have Morals and Manners Like Prophet
Muammad
The Prophet (allhu alayhiwasalam) said: When Allh
wills some good towards the people of a house hold, He
introduces kindness among them.[Ahmad] He also said:
Allh loves kindness and rewards it in such a way the He
does not reward for harshness or for anything else.[Muslim]
There are many examples of the Prophets kindness and
good treatment toward his family that we should try to emulate. He was affectionate and playful with his wives and
children and would help with household chores to ease the
burden for his wives. Following his example will bring tranquillity to the home and help to truly make it an abode of
rest.
We Know the Islamic Rulings That Pertain to Houses
Such as guarding the secrets of the home, seeking permission to enter, not looking into other peoples homes, not allowing children to enter the parents bedroom during certain
times of the day, and not staying alone overnight. This last
one is interesting to consider since some husbands travel
for their business or work. The Prophet (allhu alayhiwasalam) actually discouraged this. Ibn Umar reported that
the Prophet forbade being alone and said that a man should
not stay overnight alone or travel alone. (Amad) Not only
will he be alone, but his wife and children are likely to be left
alone in the home without any protection or companionship.
We Invite Righteous and Knowledgeable People to Our
Home
My Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and him who enters my home as a believer, and all the believing men and
women. (Surat An-N:28)
] Righteous people who enter your home will bring many
benefits due to their presence and conversations with them.
They are more likely to discuss useful topics and may be
excellent sources of information and knowledge. We should
always make du that Allh will bless us with righteous
friends since they can have such positive effects on us. The
Prophet (allhu alayhiwasalam) said: Keep company with
a believer only, and let your food be eaten only by the righteous. (Ab Dwd, at-Tirmidh)
There are No Evils Within Our Home
Television (except possibly for educational programs) and
unlawful music are not allowed in the house; pictures on the
wall do not contain animate beings; there are no statues or
anything that resembles statues; dogs are not present in the
house; smoking is not allowed; decorations are kept simple
to avoid excessiveness; the telephone is used for beneficial
purposes and not harmful ones (such as gossiping or backbiting); when people come to visit, the men and women sit
separately. The effects of these evils on the sanctity of the
home should be obvious. For example, the Prophet (allhu
alayhiwasalam) said: Angels do not enter a house which
has either a dog or a picture in it. (al-Bukhr)]
The Physical Aspects of the Home are Conducive to Fulfilling Religious Obligations
It is best for the home to be close to a mosque so that it will
be easier for men to attend the prayers in congregation and
for all family members to visit the mosque for lectures, study
groups, and social gatherings. It is also advisable to find an
area where other Muslims live to obtain the benefits of community. One should definitely be careful about close neighbours and avoid those who are obviously immoral. When
choosing a house, consideration should be made regarding
the availability of separate sitting areas for men and women.
The house should be spacious and fulfil safety and health
requirements.

2016 'deadliest year' for West Bank children in decade

Israeli forces have killed more Palestinian
children in the occupied West Bank and
Jerusalem in 2016 than any other year in
the last decade, rights group Defence for
Children International (DCI) has said.
The organisation's chapter in the occupied
Palestinian territories recorded the killings
of 32 Palestinian children (under 18), making 2016 "the deadliest year of the past
decade" for them, the group said in a recent report.
Many of those killings happened during
Israeli military raids on Palestinian towns
in the occupied West Bank, confrontations
with the Israeli army or during unarmed
protests.
"Israeli soldiers employ a shoot-to-kill policy. They have the green light to kill Palestinians, and the fact that they can do so
with impunity and no consequences builds
the foundation for such shootings to take
place," Ayed Abu Eqtaish, Accountability
Programme Director at DCI-Palestine, told
Al Jazeera.
Since October 2015, Israeli soldiers and
settlers have been responsible for the killing of at least 244 Palestinians, including
unarmed demonstrators, bystanders and
alleged attackers in what has been termed
the "Jerusalem intifada" or Jerusalem up-

rising.
Thirty-six Israelis have also been killed in
stabbing and shooting incidents carried
out by Palestinians.
"Due to the political situation, especially
the Jerusalem uprising since October
2015, the numbers have gone up with tension and clashes between the Israeli army
and Palestinians increasing," said Abu
Eqtaish.
Out of the 32, 19 were between the ages
of 16 and 17, while 13 were in the age
group of 13 to 15 years old, according to
DCI-Palestine.
In 2015, the total number of civilians under
the age of 18 killed in the occupied West
Bank and East Jerusalem stood at 28. In
2014, 13 Palestinian children were killed,
while four were killed in 2013.
"It is very rare that any investigations are
opened on the killings. There has only
been one incident in 2014 - that of NadimNuwara - in which a soldier was charged,"
said Abu Eqtaish.
On May 15, 2014, video footage showed
Israeli forces firing live bullets at two unarmed Palestinian boys, NadimNuwara,
17 and Mahmoud Abu Thaher, 16, who
were attending a protest outside Israel's
Ofer prison, killing them.
The Israeli was charged with manslaughter, but his lawyers recently told Israeli media the charges may be dropped.
Fifteen-year-old Faris al-Bayed from the
Jalazone refugee camp north of Ramallah in the West Bank was another victim
of Israeli army aggression. Al-Bayed was
killed on October 15 last year when Israeli
soldiers shot a rubber-coated metal bullet
at his head, which eventually resulted in
his death.
Regulations for the use of rubber-coated
metal bullets, also known as "rubber bullets", stipulate that the projectiles are
meant for dispersing crowds, must be fired
from at least 40 metres away at the lower
body, and not at children.
Al-Bayed was attending a march near
the camp to commemorate the killing of
14-year-old Ahmad Sharaka when he was

shot. He remained in intensive care for 67

days in a coma before he passed away.
"You cannot imagine the pain that his
mother experienced," al-Bayed's uncle,
Abu Mohammad, told Al Jazeera.
Abu Mohammad believes the upcoming
generations are now more aware than
their parents, and are thus being increasingly targeted by Israeli forces.
"There are killings, raids and detentions
everyday. It never used to be like this.
With the coming of the internet and more
awareness, the children are becoming
more nationalistic and are aware of what
is happening," said Abu Mohammad.
West Bank-based activist Hazem Abu
Helal, says the killings are "part of Israel's
policy". "This is the state's racist culture
that tells the Israeli army it is ok to kill Palestinians because they're getting rid of
'terrorists' whether it be a man, woman, or
child," Abu Helal told Al Jazeera from his
Ramallah home.
According to a poll conducted by the Israel
Democracy Institute in August, about 47
percent of Jewish Israelis said they supported the killing of Palestinians who carry
out an attack on Israelis, even if he or she
had been captured and no longer posed
a threat.
A group of human rights NGOs including
Amnesty International found that in at least
150 of the cases since October 2015, Israeli forces "killed Palestinians after they
no longer posed a threat, killed Palestinians who did not appear to be carrying out
an attack at all, or used lethal force to subdue attackers when non-lethal force would
have sufficed".
Rights organisations have repeatedly condemned such killings, which they describe
as an "excessive use of force" whereby
Israeli forces violate international human
rights law.
"We know that even if we tried to get the
soldier to court, nothing will happen to him.
What's the point? There have been thousands of Palestinians killed over the years,
and no soldier has been punished," said
Abu Mohammad. (Al Jazeera)

Governor Hussein Dado feted for peace efforts

Tana River Governor Hussein Dados
peace initiatives have received accolades
from a section of Muslim leaders in the
country.
The leaders, who included Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Chairman
Abdulghafur El Busaidy feted the governor
at a colourful event at the Nidhamia Hall in
Malindi town last week .
They lauded Dado for ensuring peace has
prevailed in the highly volatile county in the
four years he has been governor and presented him with a certificate.
UstadhAthman Ali Said, who led the celebrations, praised the governor for his
spirited commitment in peace building and
conflict resolution in the county.
He urged the countys residents, including
other political leaders, to embrace peace
and support the governor in ensuring
peace and tranquility thrives in the county
before, during and after the August 8, 2017
General Elections.
The county has experienced relative
peace in the four years the governor has
been in power and we urge all residents
to support him so that meaningful development can be achieved in the county,
Ustadh Athman said.
Between August 2012 and January 2013,
the county experienced bloody clashes
between the Orma and Pokomo that led
to the deaths of at least 180 people and
the displacement of thousands of residents
from both communities.
Speaking during the event, Dado said his
main agenda after assuming office was to
unite members of all communities in Tana
River County with a view to restoring peace
and order and thanked God that his efforts

enhance efficiency in providing services to
our members to meet their banking needs
and additional financial services to complement products and services offered by the
Saccos Back Office Services.
He added that Taqwa Sacco will soon be
embarking on a rebranding initiative to
enhance services to its customers. While
Bosa-based Saccos only receive savings
from members and allows them to borrow,
Fosa-based Saccos run like small banks
allowing members to operate regular banking services. Established in 1998 as the
first Shariah Compliant savings and credit
cooperative society, Taqwa Sacco which
has been conducting its activities in Nairobi has a membership of over 4,000 from
across the country.
In December last year, the Sacco was
voted as the best Shariah Compliant
Sacco during the International Islamic Microfinance Awards organized by the International body, AlHuda Centre of Islamic
Banking & Economics (CIBE).

had been fruitful.

I decided to form an all-inclusive government by appointing some of my opponents
in the gubernatorial contest to my government. My aim was to ensure peace was restored in our beloved county, and I am glad

we have been successful.Dado said

He thanked the community and religious
leaders for standing by him during the difficult period, and urged the residents to
remain peaceful for social-economic development.

Youth fund to launch Shariah compliant product

In an effort to improve services and enhance uptake of loans among youth in
the Muslim community, the Youth Enterprises Development Fund (YEDF) is soon
launching an enhanced Sharia compliant
loan product for the youth.
Consultations to make the youth's loan
provider to comply with Islamic principles
are currently on going and once the measures are put in place Muslim youth will
start accessing sharia'h compliant loans
which do not infringe on their religious
beliefs thereby realize their dreams of empowering themselves economically.
Speaking in Mombasa last week YEDF
chairman Josiah Moriasi said discussions
are underway with stakeholders on the implementation of the programme which he
said will see many youth from the Muslim
community accessing loans that will help
young people to venture into productive
ventures and improve on their standards
of living.
"I wish to confirm that we have started on
this process and are finalizing consultations with the relevant stakeholders. We
expect this initiative to have a sudden positive impact on loan uptake," said Moriasi.
At the stakeholder's consultation meeting,
Moriasi announced that a mechanism will
be put in place to ensure that loans are

processed within two weeks of application.

The Fund will also work with the national
and county government in a sensitization
programme on the available opportunities
provided by the Youth Enterprise Fund
which are targeted at improving their living
standards.
The Fund, in partnership with the county
governments, will enhance entrepreneurship training in the region to equip the
youth with the requisite knowledge, skill
and attitudes to run enterprises. We shall
also provide market support to enhance
the sustainability of youth-owned enterprises, he said.
He noted that the region has not performed
well in terms of uptake and repayment of
loans stating that Mombasa County has
received a total of Sh 246 million from the
Fund which has benefitted 23,000 youth
against a potential of over Sh 1 billion.
"The region has not reached its potential
and can do much better" said Moriasi.
The primary condition set by the fund for
recovering loans with interest (riba) has
proved to be a stumbling block to many
Muslim youth wishing to access the fund
to finance their development programmes.
The move will be of great benefit for Muslim youths grappling with the challenges of
financing their projects as they will be in
position to access the fund.

Mombasa Muslim women encouraged to embrace change

Women in Mombasa County have been
urged to embrace change in order to
confront social-economic challenges
facing them due to inaccessibility to information and education.
The call was made in a public forum organized by Muslim youth and women at
the close of the year at the event held
at Jomvu Mikindani area in Mombasa
County to address religious, family education, health issues and matters pertaining to women and youth empowerment programmes.
Speaking during the occasion, Women
leader Zamzam Muhammad called on
women and youth to participate in development programmes, interact with
other communities for prosperity and
utilize all the available resources including Youth Fund and Uwezo Fund
and invest in projects that can empower
them economically for sustainability.
She emphasized
that women and
youth have constitutional rights to participate in leadership and development
programmes without being discriminated against and stated that Muslim
women and youth should not marginalized and isolate themselves in matters
pertaining to development if at all they
want to progress.
Zamzam accused the Muslim community of being aloof and shying away
from participation in development initiatives, attributing the challenges facing
the community in the region to lack of
interaction with the local residents and
called on them to intensify interaction
process for social economic development and mutual understanding.
She encouraged Muslim women to
engage in micro-enterprise and other
income-generating activities to improve
on their living conditions for prosperity
and added that the era of women de-

pending on their male counterparts as sole

bread winners are long gone.
She further challenged them to take education of young girls seriously and provide the
needed support for the girls to complete their
education and careers. ''Let us employ all
available resources including bursaries and
CDF in ensuring that our children get educated. Education is the sole inheritance of
the parent to their children'', said Zamzam.
The women leader further advised women
to ensure that their daughters acquire both
secular and religious education to enable
them have a holistic life and cautioned women from involving their daughters in early
marriages instead support their education.
Zamzam pledged to partner and work closely with both women and youth in the region
to ensure their development programmes
are supported for social economic development.

Assisting the physically challenged

Social welfare is an instinctively
noble human characteristic that is
intrinsically valuable to our society
and to all of humanity. It defines who
we are as a people; compassionate,
caring, unselfish and willing to reach
out to others in their times of need.
Always with the perceptive gratitude
of the concept of: "For the sake of
Allah swt let me be there ". A very
basic concept of what one would like
to believe is actually a part of Islamic
teachings (or Humanity) at its best.
In the spirit of empowering our disabled brothers and sisters to be mobile, Ummah Foundation has since
the beginning of its inception disbursed wheelchairs and other paraplegics to the physically changed.
Ummah Foundation is one such a
humanitarian Organization that believes disability is not inability. We
believe that with assistance to the
disabled, we can go a long way in
empowering them to be productive
members of the community. For
many years, hundreds of the physically challenged people have benefitted from wheel-chairs, crutches,
blind canes and tri-cycles donated
by Ummah Foundation. It has also
helped to a large extend these categories of people living with various
forms of disabilities to start a new life
by providing some seed resources to
get them started in entrepreneurship
activities.
This has gone a long way in helping
the brothers and sisters get on with
their daily activities without depending entirely on their family members
and others. The recipients have
indeed proved the saying that disability is not inability by engaging in
meaningful activities.
This week Ummah Foundation donated a specially designed wheel
chair to our young brother Abdul. Abdul was born a very jolly and strong
boy and when he was 4 years old
and even running around Kibera
estate where they reside with his
mother, he fell sick and after a very
long ailment and several visits to different doctors, he could not lift his
lower limps. He became paralyzed
and from then he has never known
what walking or even playing around
with other children of his age means.
He has depended entirely on his
mother who carries him to school
and back. It has been a very hard
task for the young mother who has
not only taken care of him but has
to wake up and look for their daily
bread. Thanks to Ummah Foundation he has this special wheelchair
that has made his life more flexible.

We need to re-assure the wealthy that these 'disadvantaged' people are no threat to their net
profits or wealth. A donation of a wheelchair, a paraplegic and crutches to Ummah Foundation
will alleviate a lot of pain and sufferings our brothers and sisters go through. It is therefore our
appeal to all well wishers and donors that you give your contributions so that we can help the
society at large. We cant afford to see the disadvantaged community always going around
begging and we shut our eyes to it and assume all is well. We should empower them to be
meaningful in the community.
